        +1 for Reaper. Install is around 10mb and you get full functionality with an incredibly generous trial for free. Perfect for trying these out.

    Here's a couple of open-source options for yourself :

    Ardour - https://ardour.org/

    LMMS - https://lmms.io/

    Technically not open source, but Tracktion Waveform - https://www.tracktion.com/products/waveform-free
    is built on top of Tracktion Engine - https://github.com/Tracktion/tracktion_engine, which is dual license GPL-3/commercial.

    Check out ZRhytm - https://www.zrythm.org/en/index.html - and Radium - https://users.notam02.no/~kjetism/radium/
    Both are Open Source (and support VST3, unlike LMMS) but with paid installer.
    Apparently, it's pretty straight forward to build ZRhytm in Linux, but it's a nightmare in Windows.
