good luck with actually having a plane to make it onto

        I like those odds. Booked!

Boeing Max 8 planes.. I think I would rather walk.

        • At least they'll be able to get as many planes as they want

@Andoes, I appreciate you may have had a cancelled flight - and negative news travels fast - but that was not the experience for most of their travellers. They provide friendly service; on new planes; support Australian suppliers rather than multinationals for food and beverages; and actually carried over 650,000 travellers in 2023 (from when they finally had CASA approval to start at the end of January)

Bonza has provided significant savings for Aussies - isn't that what we want?!!

"based on airfares in 2022/23 from our Melbourne-based routes we saved customers more than AU$400 ($270) per round trip, which equates to a saving of over AU$100 million ($67m) for Australians in year one."

You can read more of my experience flying Bonza on this deal that I shared last month.

Even though it's a little slower checking flight prices via an app, I'll be continuing to support them as they grow their local fleet and staff, against the giants of Australian aviation who fleece us for domestic flights - especially ones to regional areas and/or at short notice.

Have to download and install an app to have a look and book.

    • +2

There is at least one online reseller. The flights come up via Skyscanner last I checked.

100% off when your flight is cancelled.

It's just so incredibly painful to use their app to search and pay for flights… works fine if you know where you want to go and when you want to go, but this airline is centered around leisure travel… people generally just want to go somewhere at a low price… but searching with that mindset is painful af on their app.

    • While I also don't like their app (and even if they really didn't want to work with third parties, it's beyond absurd that you can't book via their website), I've known very few people who "just book wherever/whenever is cheapest".

I'm one of them so completely agree we exist, but it's absolutely not how people "generally" book leisure travel, and given we're at the extreme end of budget travel, I don't think it's that surprising we're not catered for particularly well.

    • I know the app is annoying to use for comparing a lot of flight options, but it seems this was developed to help saved costs - one of the things which keeps fares low.

Here's a comment about it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhS6ZPdKh2c&lc=UgxGPv1YCsb_O… - that should link to the exact comment, if not, it's the one by '@ytlurker220'.

That would also be why fares don't appear in other systems like on Google - helping to save subscription costs - contributing to lower fares.

Do not book it you actually want to plan a holiday/trip. Only book if you want to have a completely seat of your pants impromptu choose your own adventure travel experience.

Bonza haven't yet delivered on their promise of cheap regional airfares. Ruined Christmas for many people with cancellations all over the place and then the inability to talk to any customer service people.

""""""An Australian budget airline's attempt to lease two Canadian aircraft and crew to help manage the busy holiday period has resulted in a series of flight cancellations to and from the Gold Coast.

Bonza Airline planned to use two aircraft from Canadian budget carrier Flair Airlines and took airfares from passengers – but the airline had not gained approval from the regulator Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA)."""""

Management really know how to make a bad first impression…..don't sell the flights if you don't have a plane to fly them, particularly to regional Aussies at Christmas.

BUT….Qantas Mt Isa to Brisbane 18th Jan $792 one way!!!! For a two hour flight!!!
Support the new guys or support Alan's legacy

  • +22

    Melbourne to Alice Springs
    Qantas $508
    Bonza $75 + bags

Whilst they might be having some growing pain issues if you don't support these guys and the other little guys you can enjoy getting continually done over by the big guys.

Have flown with bonza….they were late departing by one hour but the $400 saving felt super nice.

They really should go beyond the app only booking as they don't show up in google flight searches…..foolish of management.

    • I thought they only fly routes not flown by Qantas and virgin

      • +3

Used to be the case…they are starting to expand. Still no love for Sydney, can't get landing slots.

      • Well there's a reason why Qantas et al only fly those routes - there's only so many people that want to fly from the Sunshine Coast to Mildura/Tamworth/Coffs Harbour etc every week, which is why Bonza cancelled a few routes last year.

        • +1

I always thought it was an unusual strategy, if qantas can’t make money out of it gouging $800 + return for a 1hr flight like they do on exclusive regional routes, why would bonza make Money

    • +1

They show up on my site but my data provider has their code (AB) tagged as 'Air Berlin' /facepalm

      • Still not showing for me in google flights…but tried skyscanner and they are showing there.
Makes you wonder if management have tried to book a cheap flight before!

        Thanks for the heads up!

    • +3

ill support them when they allow me to book literally any other way than an app

    • Do you really want to get stuck at Alice Springs though? At least with QF, loathe as I am to praise them, they'll have a replacement aircraft there within 6-12 hours. Bonza you could be waiting days…

      • This is true.
The other issue is that every flight into Alice for the last few weeks has been late, meaning the flight to Mel has been delayed. Not a problem until you were due to land at 00:45 and are now getting in at 02:30! Love those three am uber rides!

      • I wouldn't mind. My credit card has travel insurances so would just come back on QF.

  • What are the actual routes ?

I flew them albury to sunshine coast and besides being 2 hours late they were fine

    737 Max !

How much was Alan Joyce’s brilliant leadership at Qantas worth? The board has finally revealed the answer: $28 million in bonuses, for a total of $150 million in remuneration for his 15 years at the helm of the company

Alan thanks you for your support.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says Qantas was under no obligation to pay back the $2.7 billion in taxpayer subsidies it received

Qantas will repay Australia by charging them outrageous airfares going forward.

      • I think they are referring to the recent news https://apnews.com/article/boeing-max-emergency-landing-alas…
However not all carriers have this panel.

    • +1

736, take it or leave it

  • -1

Can't support Bonza at the moment, cancelling flights and also the Max drama.

  • +1

The cancelled flights were a failure on the part of management to get the aircraft certified….they were here and ready to fly. Management are idiots for not allowing bookings until they had the planes ready to go.

The 737 Max aircraft they use are Max 8….the one with the early exit doorway is on the extended body Max 9….they don't have an early exit door.

Virgin Australia recorded the highest percentage of cancellations at 6.3 per cent during the month (NOV 23), followed by Skytrans at 4.7 per cent, Bonza at 4.2 per cent, Virgin Australia Regional Airlines at 3.6 per cent, Qantas and QantasLink at 3.3 per cent, Jetstar at 2.7 per cent and Rex Airlines at 0.9 per cent.

The problem with Bonza is….if they cancel there is not another flight in a few hours they can put you on…..it is an issue.

    • Max 8

That's a relief I'm sure it would have went through the stringent quality checks and certifications that the Alaskan Airlines plane did 2 months ago when it rolled off the assembly line.

    ahahahahaha
    ahah
    ahahahahahahahaha

    Purchased Bonza tickets 6 times.
    - 3 delayed 8+ hours
    - 2 cancelled flights (both cancelled ~12 hours prior)
    - 1 on time

The joys of living in regional Queensland

I have flown at least 10 times with Bonza. I have had at least 1 cancellation, about 6 delays and probably 3 on time. My flights have all been to same destination coating about $42-79 this is so much better compared to Qantas charging anywhere from $159 during sales up to $450. Rex is a bit better but still expensive $149-189. For the price bonza is good if you have the time.

Only issue I had was they wouldn't refund or give a waive a the rebooking fee when I had covid. The rebooking fee was $65 and was actually cheaper for me to cancel and just buy new tickets.

You will occasionally also be able to get cheaper flights if you book outside the app using third parties such as Cheapflights or eDreams. Usually the flights on the third parties are $10-30 cheaper if you don't need any baggage.

    • You’ve had 1 cancellation or at least 1?
