USA / Mexico Travel Insurance

Need travel insurance for the USA and Mexico for a family of 3, Have used TID and Budget on previous trips (5yrs ago) and they both seem very expensive now!

Definitely don't want to skip on insurance just chasing highly recommended insurers with comprehensive cover.

TIA

  • I usually stick with Covermore, but I doubt they’ll be cheaper.

Went through a fairly painless process for claims on an interrupted trip a few years ago hence the recommendation.

Fist stop is to check out the comparison websites to get an idea of general costings.
The wait for the 10%-15% discount promotions that frequently appear.

I was helping a friend with some quotes for a trip he's doing right now, suggest you try this one: https://www.insureandgo.com.au
CBA was also quite competitive for comparison.

Pretty much everything is more expensive now than 5 years ago…..

We have used insureandgo a few times, claimed once, no issues. YMMV

bankwest platinum zero has complimentary insurance with covermore for card holder and family

  • Thanks for the reply so far. Boy have prices increased in the past 5 years. Also after reviewing most insurers they all seem to have issues paying out claims.

    • Have you considered medical only?

  • I got free travel insurance through my Credit Card. They even give you a formal policy and PDS. Maybe check yours.

You should read all the Safety Tips when travelling to Mexico.

    • Im married to a Mexican national and lived there for 12 years….We should be ok.

  • In Mexico travel insurance is pretty easy. Just contact the local cartel and they will name their for your safe return.

USA is usually insanely expensive for travel insurance because of how much their healthcare costs.

I'd advise looking at credit cards. I recently went to the USA and got a Mastercard Ultimate for the trip because it doesn't charge conversions fees. It also included top level travel insurance underwritten by CoverMore for free.

When you log your trip, you get an actual policy, certificate of insurance and PDS.

It's a bit hefty fee wise (min $4k per month to waive, $35 otherwise) but that wasn't a problem for me, particularly as I held it for a few months beforehand and ran most of my bookings through it fee free.
