    • no. Unlike other banks, amex never do refund

  • First time being rejected, long time churner, also got a mortgage which is new maybe that's what it is

  • talk to me about CC churning….

For ones that have an annual fee but first year free - do you usually cancel on month #11?

Knowing that many have a 12-18 month refractory period before you can become eligible for promotions again, do you have a periodic cycle?

E.g. Months 1-6 = Westpac, Months 7-12 ANZ, Months 13-18 AMEX, Months 19-24 back to Westpac?

    • +1

I usually don't wait for the full year to finish. Once I get the bonus points I pay off the closing balance when the statement is issued and close the card. Usually happens within a month or two after opening and receiving the credit card.

  • Just wondering how long it took for Amex to approve? (i.e. how many business days)?
It would usually be really quick.

    • +1

Instantly. And then a couple days to receive the card.

      • +1

Yeah pretty much if you don't either get approved or have them ask for supporting income docs almost immediately after application then you've been rejected, since they only notify you by paper letter instead of email.

        • yeah wonder why i got rejected :(

          • @28kb: same got rejected with 3k credit limit, on a 200k income….

            • @WADealsHunter: I got it reassessed after 3 weeks of waiting to say its a credit hx thing. Ive had no issue before. Not sure if thr same

              • @ilovefood12345: did you apply for reassess?

                • @WADealsHunter: Yep took 3 weeks and they said to contact equifax to see if my credit check is acxurate.

                  • @ilovefood12345: oh, did they reassess and approved you after?

                    • @WADealsHunter: nope still declined. I gave up

                      • @ilovefood12345: thanks for letting me know. I can't be bothered trying. They probably realise im just here to churn

                        • @WADealsHunter: funnily enough, applied yest for a BOM card and got it preapproved. I think it's just amex

                          • @ilovefood12345: Been there as well. Got denied for no good reason. The only thing that had changed since I last had an Amex is that I've applied for many more cards where back then it was the 2nd card ever I had applied for. Apparently just having many applications within a short span can get you declined.

    • For me they say they're reviewing my application and they'd be in touch within five days, then a day later they called to do an ID check. Didn't ask for proof of income.

  • How long are people seeing it take for the points to hit your Amex account after hitting the spend? I spent over $3k a few days ago now and am yet to get the 100k points. Have received a couple of referrals though from friends that signed up to my link. And all the points from the actual $3k spend has appeared. Would have thought they’d come through by now..

    • +1

Usually they'll come through when statement is generated.

      • Ah ok good to know. Cheers

  • +4

Thanks to the user who had randomly clicked and used my referrer id…. 40k bonus point received. Noice

  • the bonus appears to have increased to 120,000 qantas points, is anyone else receiving this as well?

    • can’t see it using my referral link, where did you find it?

    • Where did you receive this?

      • -1

        Smell bs 😂

        • Your call.

      • Accessed via American Express via iphone, took a screenshot to raise with American Express upon receipt of bonus

        https://paste.pics/QA0O0

    • Amex is known to do targeted offers to specific (or random) users/devices/locations. You won the Amex lottery

    • Yep same here, saw the offer and applied.

      • Did the 120k bonus points get mentioned anywhere during the application process or in the approval email for you? I applied and got approved but I didn't see the bonus point offer get mentioned anywhere… so I was wondering whether that's normal.

        • Just on the initial page, though when you click through to the application from the page with the 120k offer you can see a reference to 120K in the URL.

Still waiting on approval after applying Friday night though.

  • Got offered 120,000 points when clicking the link, guess there's a bit of targeting leeway magic on their site, but might be worth refreshing for others till you get offered that or better.

    • I wonder if new card applications could raise with American Express to receive 120k in lieu of 100k…

      • It shows up as an 'exclusive offer' and mentions the offer may differ if leaving/coming back to the page, so I very much doubt it.

  • +2

Comes up at 120k Qantas points for me too, just applied for ANZ Rewards Black last night, might need to double down.

    • can't seem to get anything more than 100k atm. Any ideas what link you'd used?

      • Clicked on the link per OP's post, worked multiple times until I decided to apply.

  • +2

I also got the 120k offer after multiple attempts.
Eventually got 120k through a New Zealand VPN and a different browser on my laptop.

    • I may have to try something tricky to get it. Haven’t signed up but will be, would be good to get the extra 20k.
I haven’t got a VPN, might be time to look for one.

    • +3

Also got 120k offer through VPN via NZ. Used Microsoft Edge browser incognito mode. Though went directly through AMEX website.

  • I eventually got the 120k bonus offer, no vpn.

    • Could you share how long it took? And did you just F5 a whole bunch or did you clear your cache every time?

      • +1

I just kept checking randomly over the last 48hrs. No clearing of cache / cookies etc.

  • +1

Managed to get the 120K offer as well after clicking through the link here in incognito mode:

    https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/frequent-fly…

  • Does anyone know if you hold a business issued card (Amex Corporate Green) are you still eligible for this offer? I applied and I will call up, but wanted to see if anyone else has experience as I'll just decline the card if so.

    • I have a corporate card through my work and I was able to get the bonus points.

  • New to this so I have a question. I applied and got approved. The "Apply Now" page had the 120k bonus point offer. However, the bonus point was not mentioned anywhere during the application process nor in the approval email I received from Amex. Is that normal? Do I just spend the $3k on the card and it will get awarded then?

    • Maybe confirm with the customer service team via chat?

    • Yes, that is quite normal and shouldn't be a concern in and of itself. The paperwork accompanying the physical card will also most likely not mention the bonus offer.

The first rule of credit card applications is to always save multiple copies/screenshots of the bonus offer, including all of the terms & conditions. Then you are covered if there turns out to be any dispute about the offer.

      • Cool thanks for the info. I did take some screenshots of the offer. Hopefully it works out fine. :)

  • Rejected as well for the first time. Must not like churners.

They send the rejection via paper letter so if you aren't instantly asked to verify ID or income, you've probably been rejected.

    • Thinking back I reckon I would have had more of a chance if I selected the option "let AMEX choose my limit"

I selected 7K, but seems myself and others that selected 1-6K have been declined

      • Dang, selected $5k and no response after 3 days, never had an AMEX either but have churned a bit.

        • They send you a physical rejection letter, so you've probably been rejected

        • I love Amex. Only company that is always quick to accept or reject and doesn't ask me to jump through hoops to get the card.

I applied yesterday, uploaded a couple of pay slips. Approved today.

          • @Danstar: Got the rejection letter after a week, would hardly call that quick, not sure why they can't just instantly email.

            • @GS9891: Every time I’ve applied I always get a response with a day or two.

Same as this application. Approved after 1 day.

      • You reckon AMEX want to set higher limits? I haven’t applied yet but will soon and was going to select probably 4 or 5k.

        • Yup, saddle and tempt you with debt, hope you miss a repayment or are made redundant so they can get that sweet 24% interest

        • I usually always put in my own limit. But this time I let them (amex) decide. Got a limit of 16k

  • Best card ever. Got approved in a day, got the 100k in 3 weeks without even reaching 3k spent (approx 2400), used the 450 travel credit and will close shortly. Would be sweet if I can convince them to waive the fee or just prorate.

    • I seem to recall someone previously saying they called to get their card changed to the fee-free Amex, which triggered or entitled them to ask for a pro-rata of the annual fee. Once they received the refund they immediately closed the fee-free Amex.

      • Does this really work?

        • There is only one way to find out, Ehty-san.

          • +1

            @UrMumsOnlyFan: It works!

            • @Ehty: What is the name of the fee-free AMEX product?

              • +1

                @vawiyoci: No Annual Fee cards

                • @Ehty: Thanks, did you mention you're cancelling the card first in the chat, wait for them to suggest it or only request to be changed to the other fee-free card without talking about cancelling?

                  • @vawiyoci: no just asked them what happens to the perks(travel credit) after I downgrade, which they replied will cease but will get annual fee refunded since its been only month.

            • @Ehty: Great news! :)

Hey everyone - I've stumbled upon an awesome hack that allows you to get back most of the $249 annual fee! When you go to cancel the card via chat, ask them to change the account to a fee-free account, and they'll send you a new card in the mail and refund the annual fee pro-rata (instead of cancelling). They will change your account, send out a new card AND refund the Annual fee pro-rata. I ended up with 90k points + $249 cash back for 10+ Apple Wallet transactions + $240 back from the annual fee that was originally charged.

I got the idea from the Amex Chat when I first tired to cancel and the rep suggested the option to move to a fee-free card with the annual fee refunded pro-rata. Took about 2 days for the pro-rata annual fee to be returned as credit, and I fully cancelled the account after that.

          • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Tried this just now. Firstly, you cannot change the card via chat (any more?). Secondly (on the phone) they could not guarantee I would get a pro rata refund due to sign up bonuses but it would be up to the back office team.

            • @gadgetguy: That's a bummer. It would have been worth hanging up and calling again later, to retry with a different customer service agent.

In any event hopefully you still get it.

              • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Thanks - to be clear, it was was not this team that was making the decision it was the "back office team" and the guy I spoke to said he had no ability to influence the decision either way.

Also it was a pain getting to the team who could change my account - regular CS could not do it and had to hand me off to another team.

It definitely sees like the process has changed from when the above post was made.

They've already issued a new card - got notification the Amex card in my Google Wallet was changed.

If I don't get it, I'll be chasing regular CS to try and get a credit, on the basis I won't have used the $450 travel credit.

                • +2

@gadgetguy: "All the perks pertaining to the current card will be forfeited s you will be changing the card. Having said that, if you agree to change the card, the annual fee will be refunded automatically on your card as you have not redeemed the Travel credit and you are changing the card within 1 months from your last annual fee date."
                  CS guy on chat

                  • @Ehty: Thanks.

                  • @Ehty: I got the full $450 credit applied today. Happy days!

                    • @gadgetguy: Good outcome 👍

Sadly my application got rejected, but onwards unto the churn …

                    • @gadgetguy: Did you also close your account within 1 month of opening your account like the other guy?
How did you manage to do it and receive your Qantas points that quickly?

                  • @Ehty: Ah so it's conditional on not using the travel credit. Fair enough.

                  • @Ehty: How did you manage to get the Qantas points within a month of receiving and activating the card?
Even if you had lined up $3000 worth of payments on day 1 it usually still takes month for financial institutions to issue the Qantas points.

Curious how you managed to do all of that and close the account within a month (because I am about to embark on this adventure myself).

                    • @coldazure: It wasn’t within a month. I don’t know why CS mentioned it and I don’t ask too.
Got card 06/02 changed it 27/03

                      • @Ehty: i see. that's still incredibly quick at 1.5 months. did they issue your qantas points immediately after you hit $3000 or something?

                        • @coldazure: It was showing on my Amex account on around 15/03 but credited on 26/3.
Btw annual fee also added up to 3k min spend

                          • @Ehty: that's incredible. they reflected on your account and credited super fast. all of the other banks are rubbish by comparison.

lol, so if you got the annual fee refunded does that mean you only actually spent $2550? (or whatever the annual fee for the card you got was).

                            • @coldazure: not just me, some one else also mentioned that their AF was considered in spent.($450)

    • What happens to the travel credit when you closed the account?

      • its void

  • seems like the 120k bonus points is available for everyone atm

however, i sent a referral link to my partner, but only 100k points showing up for them, not the 120k :(

    • Yet everytime I check it still only shows 100k points for me to join - tried diff browsers, incog etc still can’t see 120k offer :(

      • same for me, let me know if you can figure this out

  • Shows 120,000 bonus points now

    • No luck here, still 100k for me across multiple devices / browsers - might just pull the trigger and apply rather than holding out hope.

      • After applying and being approved. When I go back to the site, it shows 100,000 now. Let’s see what amount of points I get ina few months

  • Finally worked for me!
I had to use a VPN and connect to NZ to see 120,000 bonus points.
The application took about 10 minutes to submit. I received a phone call to confirm the application and was approved instantly. The operator said the card should arrive within 5-10 business days.
