I went looking for a vacuum sealer to experiment with sous vide in my instant pot and clicked on the most recent deal and it was back in stock.

I don't have prime and interestingly postage was free because it was my first Amazon order from this particular category.

Popular vacuum sealing machine with excellent reviews.

  • Are the bags reusable?

    • +3

it creates a "heat seal" - so I guess you could reuse the bag, but it would be getting smaller each time as you have to open it below the seal

    • +2

Yeah technically they're reusable but I wouldn't want to reuse one that had previously had meat cooked in it.

    • You can. But wash wipe dry before reuse. otherwise it won't be sealed.

ordered one, going to be an interesting play machine

    • I learned the hard way that you can vac seal things that are moist (eg a cut of meat), but not wet. I mean, I probably should have seen it coming, but.

Make a bag with a bit of extra space then hang the bag over the bench when you do the seal and by doing that you should be able to hit the seal button before the liquids hit the sealing area. The other option is to freeze things like marinades before sealing.

That's genious. Why did I not think of that.

          • @sponson: The trick is remembering to freeze the marinades ~6 hours before you need to start your cook. Not had a lot of luck there lol.

      • That's why I like the Campfire Vac Sealer a few camping stores sell (Snowy's, etc), the pulse function gives you some control over air removal before you seal the bag. Personally the 12v adapter is useful too.

        • This has the "wet" \ pulse function. It's the left food button moist and dry. I know moist isn't wet, but it functions as a pulse, extracting the air slowly and pausing. I use this regularly with wet marinades.

      • No you can, I have this model and it has a wet mode.
Bit of a trick but once clamped you hold the unit in the air off the bench so the liquid is on the bottom, then after selecting "wet" hit "vac and seal", once you notice the air is almost gone hit "seal". I sometimes hit the "seal" button again. Doesn't really matter if some liquid comes through, but depending on the bags may not seal on the first go.
"Wet" mode just seems to go slower and pump the air out in stages giving you time to hit the "seal" button when you are ready.=, without too much liquid coming out.

  • Ziplock bags sufficient for use for me

    • This is designed for sous vide cooking, for health reasons best to use proper sous vide bags. Nothing that is clear, or you know straight away they will be toxic.

      • Ziplock and Glad brand bags are made from polyethylene plastic, and are free of BPAs and dioxins. A good rule of thumb is that when a bag is rated as microwave safe (which requires FDA approval) you can use it for sous vide. Easy, quick and simple once you figure how to push the air bubbles when submerging. Wet drying a different story though.

  • What cheap bags to buy for this?
    Any deals?

    • +3

I've been using the generic rolls from Kmart for the last two years with my Luvelle sealer and have had no issues.

    • +2

Can't speak for that model, but I have found other models don't last as long or don't get hot enough to seal the bags properly. I have this purchased for almost $70 years ago, and still works flawlessly.

      • Thanks for this SpamMeNotInOz, your comment pushed me over the line to buy one :)

  • Bought this in June 22, but last few times that we've used it , we had to hold down the left side hard if not it wouldn't seal. just saw that the side ridge thing was broken so that very thin ridge isnt the best design. We never used it roughly or anything, maybe once or twice a month so not frequent usage either.

  • Mine arrived today, sous vide for dinner tomorrow!
