Did anyone had this before? How does it taste? Bitter or liquorice?

      • Isn't it just root beer?

        • +1

It's made by roots and it's meant to taste bitter, but some add liquorice to get sweeter and remove the bitterness.

          • +1

@Scrooge McDeal: Just had a quick read on Wikipedia about the original version from Asia. I never knew about that drink and have only tried the modern western commercial version. I would love to try some of that. Might try getting the plant for my collection too.

EDIT: Actually I have some sassafras seeds around here somewhere.

            • +1

@Skatez: It used to be in Aus when I was a kid, most likely made here too (it wasn't from Asia back then).

It's always been one of those "people either love it or hate it" drinks / things. I used to love it.

Some say it tastes like medicine…

              • +3

@nismo: Definitely love it or hate it. I love it and the rest of the family hates it.

                • @Skatez: Same at my house but on a side note it actually pairs well with Jack Daniel’s Bourbon. I know of a few ppl who prefer to mix bourbon with sars instead of coke

                  • @J B S: Huh, I haven’t heard of that but I am going to try it now thanks.

              • @nismo: yes, indeed, though chinotto's even more divisive imo - i don't mind root beer, can tolerate sarsaparilla, but can't stand chinotto

            • @Skatez: seems wikipedia says original version's western not asian?

              • @tonester: Yes you are right actually. That first paragraph is a bit confusing. Sounds like they are different recipes as well?

Found this on a different site called beveragehistory.com:

Sarsaparilla root has been used commercially as a foaming ingredient and flavoring in root beer and other soft rinks for almost 2 centuries and is a traditional ingredient of ”root beer”. Root beer is an original American soft drink, first made by indigenous peoples of the New World.

Sarsaparillas were used in folk medicine in their homelands before entering international trade in the 1530s. They came initially from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. Until it went out of favor in the late nineteenth century sarsaparilla was in widespread use as a cure-all and tonic, especially for syphilis.

Charles E. Hires first experimented with sarsaparilla in his Philadelphia pharmacy in 1869, sold root beer made with sarsaparilla as a cold drink at the Centennial Exposition in 1876 in Philadelphia and organized his own company in 1890.

        • Seems to be correct for the original American version.

      • Should be liquorice.

    • Damn if only I still had my free prime membership
