HECS & SSAF Waived (Fee Free 2024) Undergraduate Certificate in Community Support (Online or TAS) @ University of Tasmania

220

Hey everyone - I just finished this free online course at Utas. I saw that it is free again in 2024 and wanted to share it. I have worked in disability for years and I found it really easy to understand but useful for my work. If you are working in any community support role or if you are looking for work in that area I would totally recommend it. You can also use it to do more study afterwards.

the next question is do you get a free edu.au email?

    • +9

clicked into thread expecting to see this question. not disappointed.

    • +8

You do - and it's basically forever as well. I still have access to my email and it's been 7 years. Great for Samsung Edu and Student Beans access.

      • Can you still order student cards with a current validity?

        • Need an active enrolment for a student card unfortunately - so best to stick to email verification only sites.

@SnowDragon: Cheers mate! Back to full fare for my gym membership then :'(

      • Weird, mine got deactivated

      • I just signed up for this course. How long until i get a edu.au email address.

        • @jjjones - How long did it take for them to approve your application?

          • @Prizm: I dont think ive heard anything from them…

          • @Prizm: Sorry, i just checked my email. I applied on the 12 Jan, and got an email saying theyve accepted me on the 20th jan.

            Its saying this though:
Due to a lack of documentary evidence, you have not demonstrated that you meet the University's General Entry Requirement. This offer is conditional on providing evidence of a completed AQF Cert III level or higher, otherwise, it will be necessary for you to provide a Personal Competency Statement (https://askus.utas.edu.au/app/answers/detail/a_id/2142/kw/Pe…) or an updated CV/Resume. Please email a copy of your supporting documents to [email protected]

            • @jjjones: Thanks for the info, I'll double check mine to see if I need to write that statement.

  • I just finished this free online course at Utas

    What did you learn?

How to deal with JV on social forums.

      • +3

        This is their opportunity…

    • +7

to support the OzB community by posting a deal. This is their final assignment. the number of sign ups/click thru's and add the number of upvotes determines their final mark.

      • i thought it was a pass / fail only? oh man now the pressure is on

    • +2

Not much. You’ll probably end up at Centrelink, just behind the counter instead of the queue.

      • Youll ne surprised by the number of people in high level positions who get their dehtees from dodgy online unis. And expect their junior to be from harvard

"For domestic students commencing study in 2024, we are pleased to offer the Undergraduate Certificate in Community Support with a 100% tuition fee scholarship. The scholarship also includes a Student Services and Amenities Fees (SSAF) waiver."

  • Its free but will use up hecs limit. If you plan on capping your borrowed amount, do not sign up to this

    • +4

any chance you can explain that a bit more?

      • +1

If you do postgrad psychology in the future and borrow the maximum amount for your degree ($121k), this deal will force you to pay parts of the course upfront, as you will not have enough since you reached the hecs cap by doing filler courses like this.

This won't affect most people, but can have an impact if someone is studying medicine or high hecs debt degree's. Or going back to study.

        • Thanks. Do you know where to find out more information about HECS loan limit? Are you able to borrow more if you have paid off earlier HECS debts?

    • +2

I don't think you have any idea about what does and doesn't make something a valid deal post.

  • +9

Reading a deal like this does a very specific thing with me. I imagine signing up just so I can get an edu address and then I think about how it would devolve into living the real version of all the dreams I have had where I've done nothing for a subject and there's a 100% of your grade exam coming in X hours. I'm sure many of you who have been through tertiary stuff have that one. I honestly don't think I'll ever completely shake them and it's been like like 18 years since I was in uni

Although, lately, it has morphed into I'm in a band and we're about to go out infront of 10k people and I just remembered I do not know any of their songs, have never practiced with them and I'm going to be singing.

    Nightmare fuel.

    • +2

Yeah, there isn’t enough study done about post university PTSD, the stress during uni is horrible.

    • +2

yeah i still get the nightmares…

sometimes i think the only thing i got out of my many years of stuffing around in uni switching degrees and only getting out with ONE is the edu email, a crapload of debt and ptsd from group assignments.

I actually signed up for a course in 2020 (five years after my last degree) and instantly regretted when the assignments were due in two months. Had to live through the of horror that feeling all again.

  • +9

For those who only want the edu email, you can sign up and not enrol in any units. Did last year with the Diploma of Sustainable Living course and so far my email is still active.

    • So, is there any issue of you don't "graduate" or successfully finish the course? Mr partner is looking to do something to keep themselves busy and upskilling while looking for work, but if they find work, it is likely they will need to stop the course.

      • I signed up in April last year and so far I have not received any communication from the university asking me why I'm not enrolled in any units. Having said that it's only been less than a year and the course page says it has a maximum duration of 3 years so who knows, something may happen after the 3 years are up.

        • Thanks! My partner is planning on enrolling in courses, so the scenario might be different. I'll call UTAS and confirm with them

    • is this the one?
      https://www.utas.edu.au/courses/cse/courses/z0u-undergraduat…

how soon do you get the email? is it upon registering? or do they have to approve your enrolment first?

      • +2

        Nah it's this one.

If I remember correctly the enrolment needed to be approved first which took under a week.

I also had to call their IT helpdesk to get the password reset before first use.

        • i don't see any $ fees listed for these courses, neither do i see anywhere stating they are fee-free. all i see is that you can use HECS to avoid paying any fees upfront…

          • @plentifoo: Scroll down a bit and you should see this

Study without tuition fees in 2024

Domestic students commencing the Diploma in 2024 may be eligible to receive a 100% HECS fee scholarship. This means you can study the certificate without any tuition fees. HECS fee scholarship will be automatically applied on enrolment.

Anyway fees are usually charged per unit and as I said above, I didn't enroll in any units so there are no fees anyway.

            • @xers: oops i thought the courses were actually free, not just fee-free because of HECS.

but i guess it doesn't matter if you dont actually enrol in any units like you said.

              • +1

@plentifoo: No I think you misunderstood. The portion I quoted means that they will give you a scholarship which covers your HECS, so it is actually fee-free without incurring any HECS debt.

                • +1

@xers: thanks mate - yes that makes sense now. it's a scholarship.

i registered for an account to apply, but the course has only been selected as a 'preference' and i'm waiting on an offer now i believe.

At what point do they issue you an email? I'm guessing this is before you enrol in anything at all?

                  • +1

@plentifoo: You get the email after you receive the offer. Shouldn’t take more than a few days.

  • No post graduate free certificate course out there atm?

  • Thanks 👍
