WINESPECTATOR

"Lush, with milk chocolate, espresso and maraschino cherry flavors at the core, plus grace notes of palo santo, loamy fresh earth, herbs and white pepper. Reveals supple, polished tannins, with a long, lingering finish. Drink now through 2031. 91 points" Wine Spectator.

Vintage: Good late-winter and early-spring rains led to an even budburst, good early canopy growth and contributed to mitigating frost damage. Dry conditions prevailed from November onwards, with rainfall well below average for the remainder of the growing season. The 2021 vintage has been described by local winemakers as classic Clare with cool and dry conditions producing solid yields and fruit with great varietal character and natural acidity.

Winemaking: Crushed and destemmed. Static stainless steel fermenter. 9 days on skins. 100% Seasoned French Oak Hogsheads.

Nose: The nose displays beautifully complex notes of plums, cassis and a hint of cigar box.

Palate: The palate is smooth and well-rounded with plenty of blackberries and plums, complemented by well-integrated tannins.

Cellaring: Drink now to 2031

Winemaker: Bec Hardy

Vegan. Screwcap.

  • Anyone know how this rates compared to Parliament of Owls, regardless of price difference.

    • @arsenal1 Unlikely anyone would know. The end of a run of an export label wine made for US export. As I've not heard of nor tasted the Owls wines, I'm no help either. Cheers! RD :-)

  • +1

How does this compare to the 2020 from this deal? bought a couple of cases and have been happy with these.

I'd suggest that this is a marginally better wine reflected in the price point. If you enjoyed that one, you'd enjoy this I'm sure. Stylistically similar as both were made for US export. Enjoy! Cheers! RD :-)

      • Liked the 2020 for the price (actually have a bottle of it put out on the kitchen bench for dinner tonight :-) ).

Will be interested to see how they compare.

        • @opposablethumbs Oh nice work. Enjoy that one - it's also sold out now. There was only 68 doz left of that one and just 100 doz of this left, although we're about to bottle some more for the US in a week or two, so this Clare Valley one might hang around longer.
          Enjoy! RD :-)

  • Any super deals on the red sampler 6 pack incl delivery?
Even if it was 2x 6 packs for the same price as this deal?
Would rather sample the range and have 6 unknowns rather than just have the 1 unknown (and a lot of it).

    • @fury No plans at this stage for anything like that. Cheers! RD :-)

  • Are you sure this is wine ? "Lush, with milk chocolate, espresso and maraschino cherry flavors at the core, plus grace notes of palo santo, loamy fresh earth, herbs and white pepper".
I knew the yanks were lousy wine connaisseurs but this is pushing it a bit.

    • @lepeyrol
The USA is the world's largest wine market, with the largest population of regular wine drinkers, import the second largest amount of wine and Costco the leading wine retailer in the US. Some great wine producers there too. Downside price/quality ratio now ehere near as good as Australia. :-)

      • Can't go wrong then.

  • Any chance the reserve Shiraz will ever return?

    • Hi @ozbfilter. Unlikely in the short to medium term. These deals are all driven by export sales and the bits and pieces left over. Premium wines, wholesale prices.

At this stage, most of what we’re doing with reds is in the Cabernet space at all price points and not much premium shiraz.
      Cheers! RD :-)

      • How about a reserve cabernet? ;)

  • Thanks, Richard. Just bought a carton. You mention that it can be cellared for about 7 years. When would be the best time to drink it? I'm thinking 2027, not 8:30 am. lol How will it develop over the years with cellaring?

    • Morning @omblygombly. Thanks for the order. With a little cellaring you'll move through that stage of primary flavours into the secondary flavour profiles you normally get with older wine. It's a lovely drop this one, lovely fruit, fine tanins, very well integrated young-ish wine. Re aging, It is an entirely personal preference and even that changes! I used to love good older reds 10+ years on them. These days, I tend to drink them a lot younger as my preference has changed….. it's a funny old thing your palate. As for this wine, my own preference would be now and the next three years…. Did you grab some of the Shiraz Tempranillo 2023 from this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/821646

      Enjoy! Richard :-)

  • No, I didn't buy any of the Shiraz Tempranillo. I'm not a big red wine drinker and I need to curtail my drinking. My poor liver and kidneys need some respite. :)

    • Ah ha. Welcome to my world. ;-)
