I've got an older Deco set, and its pretty good - this is a good deal IMO

  • Does this have gigabit ethernet? Can't seem to see it on the product page, unless I'm blind.

    • Deleted. Answer below.

    • The forth image says it's got ethernet backhaul

  • +3

Get this M4 not the cheaper E4 (100mbit). M4 has gigabit Ethernet.

    • M4 has gigabit Ethernet.

Awesome, thank you for that, might grab it!

      • Saved my time to do research.

    • -1

      E4 is cheaper?

  • Cant see that thia supports ethernet backhaul or do they all support that?

Would this be good through brick walls?

    • Supports Ethernet backhaul. Each device has 2 Ethernet ports.

Yes, installed in 3 bedroom double brick house. Fixed wifi. Recommend Ethernet or EOP back haul.

    • I would like to vouch for these as well. Live in a big house with users across 2 floors, NBN in the garage and the old modem was struggling to reach all corners of the house, including my room and the kitchen. Got 3 of these and now I have connectivity in my backyard too (furthest point of the house). We have the main unit sitting upstairs in a cabinet (poor design when we built the house), thought that would affect it but they have been working fine. Very happy.

I got the Deco S4 a few weeks back for $149, which has the same specs as the M4 apparently but just shorter lol. Anyway, it was very easy to set up and eliminated all the wifi dead-spots we were having issues with. I've since added an ethernet backhaul, but even before that, it was an improvement. I connected them to a Telstra modem, and once I'd changed their operating mode to access point, rather than the default wi-fi router mode it's been smooth sailing. No double NAT, didn't even need to change the modem to bridge mode, just turned off the telstra wi-fi to minimise interference. Recommended!

    • Ahhh I literally as of 20 minutes ago bought the S4 on Amazon but can return it if the specs ( minus height ) for $199.

Looks like the M4 is worth it

Edit- these might be too tall to fit snug in my NBN garage box but we will see

Haha, I'm a terrible ozbargainer because I probably wouldn't go through the hassle of a return just to save $40 tbh. A true ozbargainer would be haunted every time they looked at their wifi access points knowing they didn't get the best deal they could, but I'd just be happy with the wifi problem being solved

        • +1

          Amazon free returns.
Ended up ordering and will return the one that doesn’t best suit my needs.

I’ve suffered with terrible wifi far too long so like you I’m happy to have a solution now.

  • head like a f-ing orange

    • Well I enjoyed the reference. :)

  • Would this be enough for 25mpbs NBN and possibly will upgrade to 100mpbs? Won't be upgrading anymore than that.

How much of an upgrade would TP-Link AC1300 (Deco M5 2 pack) be compared to this? Amazon is floating around the $144 price.

Only got a single storey house so 2 is probably more than enough.

    • Data Transfer Rate ‎1167 Megabits Per Second.
no problems for 100 Megabits NBN.

      • Obviously no individual client will get anywhere near that 1167.

But yes, this should be fine for 100Mbps.

    • I have the M5 system.
It will be fine for NBN100mbps.
      AC1300 means:
      5 GHz: 867 Mbps (802.11ac)
      2.4 GHz: 400 Mbps (802.11n)

5Ghz when you are closer, then it changes to 2.4ghz as you are further away
(assuming: your device/s has 5ghz, no other mesh points available)

      M4 gets slightly slower 2.4ghz. (300mbps)
From the pictures, the M4 is really tall, so depends where you plan to have your units.
Remember they need power point access.

Same price on their (Harris Technology) eBay store if you have any vouchers to use up/Plus discounts.

  • +1

Remember to change the mode to access point if you intend use old modem/router as it defaults to router mode causing double NAT.

    • what's the advantage of using an old modem/router in addition to this?

      • +3

        If your modem has VoIP.

My code gives a $15 discount bringing it down to $144

  • $108 on ebay plus if you just want a 2pk for a unit
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/254457922206?_trkparms=amclksrc%…

    • Isnt that $108 each?

      • Nah looks like a 2 pack

  • If you have HFC will this need to be hooked up to your router (&it's broadcast disabled) or can you just replace your router with this??

    • It can just replace your router as it supports several WAN types. Do you know what’s your wan type? Most likely PPPoE.

      WAN Types:
      Dynamic IP
      Static IP
      PPPoE
      PPTP
      L2TP

  • Will these pair with an existing Deco Modem router? I have an X73-DSL on it's own

    • My understanding is the Decos work together

  • Isn’t wifi 6 we should go for?

  • +3

Cool..does duel ethernet ports mean you can use 1 port to set up ethernet backhaul, then plug a device into the other?

    • +1

      Sure does

    • Either connect them in parallel series or each device is connected to a switch

  • I am thinking of buying this to solve the WiFi problem at my place. It’s a two storied old building with small takeaway shop at ground floor and living place at first floor. Optus modem and NBN with 100Mbps is at front part of shop in enclosed area. The connection is terrible at back part of shop and not that great connection on first floor as well.

    • I got an college onto Mesh WiFi to solve his wifi issue, and worked.
His not really good with IT stuff, but still managed to set it up without asking me.

With this system (3 units) having 866mbps of speed, there should be enough wiggle room, for any user error.
As in not (unable to) placing them at ideal locations.
And still make the most of your NBN100 plan.

If you were to get faster plans (250+), then more planning or more expensive (faster) units will be required.

  • Does this have guest networks as well as private networks. If so can devices see each other on the guest network eg would a phone be able to cast to a chromecast on the guest network ? ASUS routers no longer support this.

    • Bump,
I consider network isolation options to be important too. I dont need my kids viruses getting on my laptop.

    • Check out https://www.tp-link.com/au/support/faq/1460/

"A Guest network allows visitors in your home to use the internet without needing to connect to your private network. Wireless devices connected to a Guest network have no access to resources shared on the Main network so the security and privacy of the Main network are guaranteed."

Still does not quite answer the asked question in hindsight. :(

Found this link but not sure it is accurate for this model : https://community.tp-link.com/en/business/forum/topic/162818…

      • Thanks - yeah it was a bit of a bummer when ASUS pulled that functionality. Most of my devices at home are connected to the guest network. I keep my private network isolated from the guest and only have a couple of desktops, printer and NAS connected to the private network.

Or $149 with discount code HGTSNS for below:
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/283715869837

  • Impulsive buy :( does this work with starlink ?

    • You will need the starlink ethernet adapter.

      • Yup already got one :) you saved me. Thanks mate

  • Hmm… This, or Nest Wifi (second hand)? Similar price.

    • +1

When it comes to routers etc, IMO it's best to buy new. I've had countless routers replaced under warranty as I feel that they don't last long. Plus it saves finger pointing from your ISP if you have connectivity/speed/drop-out issues. At least with new you'll have customer support & full warranty.

Why not the netflix orbi 3 pack for $199 posted previously, how does this compare?

    • netflix orbi ? $199?

      • *netgear orbi, damn autocorrect

  • Is this better than deco M5?

  • The x68 3-pack I bought recently was a game changer. Absolutely awesome piece of kit.

Alas roughly three times this price. :(

  • Mine arrived this morning and set up was a breeze!
    Absolutely satisfied with the product
    Thanks for the post

  • Just checked the web… Looks like they do 15 3 packs of ax… Gonna take a while to work out which one suits our household

    • Its less about what suits your house but a marketing tactic to create more products than needed to create illusion of choice, fear of missing out, upgrades and get us to spend more.

  • These work great, i have two at home. Only thing is it doesn't report data traffic on each device whereas more modern ones do.

    • This app is very basic, only reports the devices

  • Arrived today. Works a F*&^%$#@G Treat.
Replaced a Tenda Mesh which could not reach the corner of a room upstairs with the door closed. This gets 95mbps from a 100mbps FTTP.
