  • The suggestion has been made that the 8GB Nexus 7 will be stopped, the 16GB will take its place and price as the lowest model (and will generally only be available via the Play store), and the 32GB will take the place and price of the 16GB.

Having a price which is $50 less than previously would tie in with this - although we will only know for certain on the 29th.

    • I also heard not only that they will also drop the price further.

      • Most likely, in one week time there might be a iPad mini and there definitely will be a Surface.

iPad Mini announcement in 3 days, just in case iOS tickles your fancy.

    • +10

It doesn't tickle mine, but I will wait in case it has an effect on the pricing of competing products such as this one.

I get a feeling the ipad mini will be expensive for what you get. And if it's not a retina display, I don't want it.

      • +1

Yeah, really depends on the price point. I'm assuming there won't be many options, and will be around 400-500.

        • +6

If it really is $500… You could buy two Nexus 7's with that amount.. or an iPad Large. That would make the iPad mini rather expensive compared to it's bigger brother.

Pricing leaks suggest it's around $350, with the price going up by $100 every time the storage is doubled. The most you'll pay is probably $700 for the 3G + 64GB version.

        • Don't forget, $350 is in american pricing. That's likely more like $400 for picking it up at an AU shop.

Apple have a problem that the ipod touch is overpriced, so if they go down in price to attempt to compete in their actual marketspace, they stamp all over the ipod pricing.

Maybe they will, and they'll cut the ipod price at the same time?

When you can pick up a 16GB ipad3 from Kogan for $489, $400 for an ipad mini seems far too expensive.

          "Gizmodo suggests $250-$350…"

Sounds a bit low for an Apple product. These are Nexus 7 prices, and Nexus 7 does not make any margins. Apple on the other hand likes to make a lot of margin on their products. I'm guessing they would have to start at $350 for 16GB, if not $400.

        • "The rumoured starting prices go from $US250 to $US350."

again pls visit the link to read more, I'm just quoting… :)

        • Comparing to other brands, Apple Au actually offers very good pricing. It's basically US price plus GST.

Australian Nexus 7 is a complete rip-off comparing to the price in US.

        • +3

          Spec comparison

          iPad 7.85" Nexus 7"
          Non-Retina screen "HD" resolution 1280x800
          512MB RAM 1GB RAM
          Dual Core A5 32nm CPU Quad-core Tegra3 CPU
          $350 USD? $250 USD

These sound fairly low end to me, and if Apple wants to compete in the cheap tablet territory they're going to have to low ball it on the price and specs.

      • your feeling might be wrong. $329 as per latest rumour below. Anyways,we'll find out soon enough.

Remember when people were tipping the Surface to retail around $199. Great sense of humour they have!

        • Its apple. They are probably going to sell for $399 and exclude the light sensor because its too darn thin to fit one.

        • Remember, with the usual US price gouging/GST/direction of the wind difference, you should expect to pay A$399, if the US price quoted is $329.

That's for the 16GB WiFi model, which looks like it's going to end up competing with A$249 for the 16GB Nexus 7 (post cuts rumoured). The ipad3 is $489 from Kogan.

          A$399 vs A$249

          I know which I'd buy.

  • yes the ipod touch is over priced, should be $200 at max. I think its better for everyone just to wait another week and see what happens, this price isn't that special anyways.

This is likely a permanent price drop rather than a special

    • +1

That's insane. Some one bought 32gb version before it is even announced.

      • Or that someone might be from Google LOL

  • Looking forward to next couple of weeks. Looking to pick myself up a plaything for ~$200. Most likely a Nexus 7.

  • Somehow Apple product gets mentioned anytime a tablet deal is posted!. I feel sorry for Samsung, Sony and whoever else makes tablets (Not really they got loads more many than I will ever have, or get to see). Lucky Forest invested in that fruit company way back when…

    • Apple dominate the tablet market so it's natural that they will be the benchmark. That's changing though - their marketshare has dropped form 85% to 60% - and now Android tablets are catching up in terms of hardware, eg. there isn't currently an Android tablet with a screen as nice as the iPad's but the Nexus 10" might change that if the rumours are true (2560×1600 display). Competition is good for everyone, including iOS users.

      • Ya, the marketshare for ipad has dropped because ipad ÷(ipad+android tablets) =60% that android tablets are mostly cheap sub $200 ones and that's what Google wants to see because they are terrified that Siri will eat their lunch someday on mobile devices.

    There's a McDonald's club?

  • The new 32gb nexus 7 still doesn't come with a micro SD card slot?

    • No, Google want you to use Google Drive/Docs for files, Gmail for email, Google Play Music and Movies, etc. Or any of the other competing services or a home network/NAS/media centre.

      • That would be cool if it had mobile data.. And for that data to not be so darn slow & expensive.

How are you going to do this stuff on wifi?

I would rather have larger storage so I don't need an internet connection, and it's faster to access it. Also, won't need to drain extra battery from wifi/3G.

But then.. that would be pro-consumer. Wouldn't want that now would we?

        • +4

If you want that, you can buy a tablet that's not subsidised by Google. This one is good hardware sold at a lower then normal price to encourage people to use Google's services. Apple makes 40% profit on their iDevices, Google is breaking even on the 8GB model and making a single digit percentage profit on the 16GB. Other manufacturers provide tablets with features like 3G, microSD, etc., and Google provides their OS for free to them to do so. That's pro-consumer.

By the way, Android phones since Froyo have had a mobile hotspot feature so your Nexus 7 can access mobile data without requiring a separate SIM and plan.

        • You can also get a cheap usb cable from eBay and use another cheap usb drive or sd/micro sd cards with it. It even supports large hdd

  • Paid $320 when it was preorder from google.

For $269 this is a great deal.

  • Great price for a great tablet. There is so much you can do with it. Using mine now, infact :D

    • there is so much you can do with ANY tablet.
