These no longer work at the ATO, right?

    • really? since when?

      • +5
        • I thought they blocked it once previously, then after a huge amount of complaints (including to the Ombudsman?), it was reinstated. Or was that the Vanilla GC?

          • +7

@lilkid28: Transactions at the ATO were blocked on Coles Mastercard gift cards on 02 November 2022, and then unblocked a couple of weeks later. And yes, there were a number of OzBargainers submitting complaints to AFCA about this.

I do not think transactions at the ATO has ever been blocked on Vanilla Visa gift cards. To be fair, Vanilla Visa gift cards are not as popular, because you rarely see sales for them in comparison to Coles Mastercard gift cards.

As a side note, Activ Visa gift cards have blocked transactions at the ATO since the scheme’s introduction. I tried it myself in late 2022 and payment was declined.

            • +1

@WookieMonster: I'm pretty annoyed at some VISA prepaids not working with DEFT anymore. The Coles MC here still work but it's taking the fun out GC buying for me

    • -2

They worked for me last November. However there’s a limit of how many it will process per day. You have to give it 24 hours cooling period before trying again.

      • +1

The shutdown apparently came in December, as WookieMonster's comment suggests.

      • -1

Yes worked for me as well in Nov. Used 4 $50 cards in one day.

        • +1

Isnt november before december when they were banned?

        • I also used these Coles Prepaid MC in early December 2023.

    • Hi mate for a small fee you can use and register the card with pay.com.au

    • +5

Works again now. Paid some yesterday to ATO. Thought I’d give it another go before paying into my water account. To my shock and surprise it worked!

  • +8

But they still work for council rates, which is not normally something you can get cashback or rewards for by paying with your credit card.
I use my HSBC to buy gift cards (2% cashback + 2000 bonus Flybuys), and then pay rates with those.

    • +1

The 2% cashback only for amount up to $100 and this case it is $105.

      • +9

        I do split payment: $99+$6.

        • +7

The extra time, staff intervention/questioning, flybuys not scanned each time, card rejection due to multiple uses in a short period all make it not worthy.

It may be OK if you only buy 1 or 2 cards.

        • I thought you couldn't split payment for gift card purchases at coles

      • +2

It is a state, local council dependant issue that makes the card usable or not. Not every one allows customized amount. Not a single answer fits all.

  • +3

Was the mastercard gift card the one that got hacked before?

  • +1

There was a known error when this promo ran late Dec, and people didn't get their points. Also reports that cannot spend more than $300 at a merchant as subsequent cards decline.

    • +1

I swear it's intentional.. just testing the waters to see how many pick it up up.

      • The timing is remarkable, when they would end up better off silently pocketing $25 of fees.

  • +1

Many stores didn’t seem to have them available last time.

  • +2

It’s back! It went into my body corporate’s fat pockets hours after I got them last deal lol Didn’t even get to smell the plastic cards!

    • Exactly how it should be used if you don't want the hassle.

  • 2000x5 cards points for the whole week?

  • +1

Wouldn't the $100 ones be more profitable than the $250?

    • -1

      Yep.

    • but you only get 5?

      • I think he means as a percentage

  • +1

Wow this is quick. Didn’t expect the offer so soon since the last one was 3 weeks ago. Just got a new CC so this is good news

    • +11

We haven't had a 10% off for ages. This is peanuts.

  • $illy question, can we use this Mastercard gift card to buy other gift card/s on sale?

    • +2

Not in person, but they can be used online. If rejected online then pay via paypal.

      • +1

Yeah, I had to go through PayPal.

        Added every card lol

  • So these are still generally working for payment with Paypal and with Auspost Billpay?

  • -2

    Copied from previous deal:
Assuming you get 2105 points per $100 MCGC, which is worth $10*(2105/2000) = $10.525 Flybuys dollars, and also assume this $10.525 is equivalent to real cash (real professional would argue its real cash value is less than its face value and this is actually correct since one would be able to obtain discounted Coles gift card elsewhere , but let’s just say they’re equivalent):

    $100 MCGC:
    1-105/(100+10.525) = 4.99887%

    $250 MCGC:
    1-257/(250+10.525) = 1.35304%

    • 4.99% discount is not bad but awarded as flybuys points, not directly money off. With the risk of point failed to be awarded, need to chase up cust service, risk of turning to coles and there's no stock, risk of hacking, n if we use it to pay council there's around 50c fees per 100 dollars.

    • I'm really surprised that this is considered a good deal amongst ozbargain community. Paying $105 for $100 worth card to get $10.525 flybuys dollar that can be used in certain stores!!
The $250 one is a joke!

      Thanks for the details.

      • +1

Useful for those who need to meet CC minimum spend, but otherwise not worth it.

    • -2

Have no idea why some dummies would beg me, apparently these people hate maths.

      • +3

It could be because your maths for the $250 denomination is wrong. You said:

        $250 MCGC:
        1-257/(250+10.525) = 1.35304%

The $10.525 in Flybuys Dollars assumes that you earn 2105 Flybuys points for purchasing a $250 Coles Mastercard gift card through this deal. However, that is incorrect, because you actually earn 2257 Flybuys points (i.e. 257 standard points and 2000 bonus points), meaning you will actually earn $11.285 worth of Flybuys Dollars.

        Your equation should instead read:

        $250 MCGC:
        1-257/(250+11.285) = 1.63997%

  • Do these still work if you have a 5x booster in Flybuy accounts?

Pretty poor value, but I have to book hotels for Asia soon anyways.

  • Does this essentially mean that I buy 2000 points for $5?

    • Only with the $100 card

    • That’s pretty much how I see it

  • +2

looks like previous deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/821892) didn't go as planned … hope more people don't buy into this cheap deal of coles as now a days coles prices are high or equal to woolworths and coles doesn't provide 10% discount woolworths gives …. !!!

  • +5

I enjoy having a few of these kicking around with a couple bucks left on them. Great for signing up to services/free trials that require a credit card.

  • Thanks OP

  • When will we have %10 discounted deal again.
    I want that deal desperately

    • Given the last deal was less than a month ago looks like Coles is just testing to see what promo works. We may not see 10% deal for a while…

      • Any promo will work. Free points/money off is a bargain, even if only 1% off there still be suckers.

  • Is this strict on the 5 cards per flybuys card or is it 5 cards per day per flybuys card

    • +4

This deal is strictly limited to 5 gift cards per Flybuys account for the duration of this deal.

  • +1

If it wasn't for the $5 purchase fee I'd get a few of the $100 cards.

  • +1

With Coles Insurance, we can get $10 off by 2000 points at the purchase time. Basically pay $95 for $100 giftcard, and only 95 flybuy points. But can use self checkout, and no hassles of asking staff for split payment.

Also 2% cashback on HSBC card.

  • +4

Tried today at the ATO website, but the cards are no longer accepted.

      • tried a few cards, showing internal error:(

        • I get this error more often than not. Pain in the arse, but at least the phone number works for balance checks.

  • seems like this deal comes back from time to time. more regularly

    • They may run more regularly but definitely poor value if they are points vs straight discount.

      • +3

        These are crap.

10% is where it should be at. Bonus for unlimited online purchases.

  • +1

Anyone who can't use these "anywhere Mastercard is accepted" please submit a complaint https://www.afca.org.au/make-a-complaint

    • The ATO is the government they wont fix themselves

  • +1

I just spent the last hour and a bit driving to 5 stores. Only 1 store had any $100 cards. You need to be really dedicated or lucky to use this promo.

  • +1

Went to 5 Coles nearby, only 1 had 5x$100. So I took them all.
None at the other 4. only $250s.
One of the cashier told me a man bought 10x $250s with his wife together.
    That's desperate…

    • +2

Especially the $250’s rather than the $100’s

    • +7

Some people might say that what you and I did making the effort to go to 5 stores is also a bit desperate.

      • +1

They went to 1 store and made $30. You went to 5 stores and made $25. You probably spent most of it in fuel.

        • Let me know which car would cost $25 of fuel for a 10km trip, I would avoid it.

They 5 stores are all on my way to my destination, it doesn't cost me extra fuel.
But it did cost me extra 5x3 mins.

  • +1

    Classic no availability…

  • Judging by the lack of comments I'm guessing not many takers this time round, or no availability?

    • I searched five stores at different times today, and none of them had any stock whatsoever. (Yes, even $250s were not on the shelves.)

It could also be that a number of OzBargains are disgruntled at Coles Mastercard gift cards currently not working at the ATO, so their interest in this deal has likely cooled.

  • One store had none at all
Tried to pay the ATO and did not work
Seems illegal for Heritage to block merchants
    I signed the petition
Should we be writing to AFCA?
    Is the standard email?

    • +2

It's working on ATO again. I paid on last Thursday, last Sunday and today.

      • Thanks for the update

      • Used up my 6x$100 on 22/1 paying my tax

  • How long does it take to reflect on flybuys?

I bought yesterday and haven't gotten anything

    • +1

Standard and bonus points from instore purchases at Coles are usually credited around 4:30pm Sydney time on the day after the purchase, but can take 1-2 days longer in some circumstances.

In your case, I would suggest checking your Flybuys account later today.

    • +1

it's always updated around 5pm following day for me

    • Longest one for me takes 1 week, the whole transaction didn’t show in my flybuys account, I even lodged an inquiry with flybuys.

  • +1

Had a smooth experience spending 5 x $100 on my council rates

First Coles I went to in S-E Melbourne had plenty of cards

  • Coles - Collingwood had around 10 to 20 $250 cards, I couldn't see any $100 cards

    • It seems all shortage reports are from VIC.

  • Coles Spencer/flinders/south Melbourne plenty $250 no $100

  • Anyone had any troubles buying the same gift card and getting given the inactive card and the store taking the active one as an accident?? I also through out my recieipt :(

    • It is possible when you bought a few, especially did separate transactions. There was one occasion that I saw someone grabbed a dozen, mixed up the activated and unactivated during the payment process and called for help.

  • Has anyone been trapped by the new barriers? You go in store, find no stock, try to get out but the barriers won't open because you didn't buy anything.

    • +1

Yeah, several times, pisses me right off, I've pushed them aside to get out, triggered an alarm, no one payed any attention.

      • +1

I got told off for forcing them open. Got told it breaks the gates.

        • Good then. They can't register any legal complaint, given they're trapping you in.

    • yeah, always need to ask the attendand to open it, very annoying.

  • I had one card decline at a butcher today and when I later checked online the pending charge was showing. How long till the pending charge drops off? Did this happen often?
