Best Type of Fan for My Bedroom with No Circulation?

I'm currently renting and my bedroom is about ~9sqm. No AC unfortunately, and the circulation is very poor.

I'm trying to figure out what type of fan is best for my needs. Growing up I remember using pedestal fans and portable evaporative coolers back home and I found them really bad. It was the same hot air circulating around and I swear it made the room hotter.
I've done some research and it looks like air circulators are very popular but I'm not sure if it will be suitable for my needs.

My bedroom has outdoor access with a large sliding door that I keep open at night. However, due to the poor circulation I don't feel much of the air and it takes a while for the room to cool down on warm days. Please see my lovely diagram: https://pasteboard.co/4O9YXGxtcFmP.png

  • I don't have a budget - happy to pay whatever price for the best value.
  • I like feeling cool air on me (so not sure if a circulator is best because I should be pointing those to the ceiling?).
  • Will only be using it at night to sleep.
  • Would be good to get something that helps for the winter cold too but not an issue if it doesn't. I don't mind feeling cold, but hate feeling warm.
  • don't care about noise

  • Portable AC is going to be the best here with your requirements listed. Have to seal off the sliding door with a kit and you'll be getting nice cool dry air to cool down.

Second option if money is no object and you don't mind the noise, then I'd get a pretty large heavy duty fan that blows air OUT of your room out of the sliding door. That will bring in fresh air from the outside. Could then get a slim tower fan that will blow lightly on you directly.

If you have sunlight in your room during the day you want to do everything possible to block that out and keep the door closed.

  • Get AC, but failing that get a DC pedistal fan as it is quiet and some have night time modes. Make sure you get at least one that has 26 speeds, not the cheap ones with 3 or 5 speeds.

I had my old Kogan DC pedestal fan on a setting of 3 on Thursday night all night. It is a copy of https://www.catch.com.au/product/kambrook-40cm-dc-motor-pede… , but it's out of stock.

    • Do you mean portable AC?

Why do you recommend a pedestal fan over an air circulator and why one with 26 speeds?

Just trying to understand your reasons to help me decide!

      • Yes portable if you can stand the noise.

Check out the choice review and feedback on the 26 speed DC pedestal fans.

        • Are you saying 26 speed fans are generally higher quality than the 3 speed equivalents, not for the actual speed options but as an indicator of higher quality?

26 speeds seems a bit excessive lol.

      • Only if you have not used a 3 speed fan at night in your bedroom.

What you want to do is to have two fans. One points in and sucks air from the outside, the other points outwards and pushes hot air out your room. This setup will replace all the air in your room super quick and it'll equalize the indoor temperature with the colder outside air.

The type of fan isn't important, the important bit is that your room has an intake and exhaust. A little bit like cooling a computer case.

Interesting, thank you! Could you the upload the imgur link please? It says unavailable

  • Does the sliding door get direct Sun? If so I would put blockout curtains on the outside during the day to stop the sun hitting the window. Keeping the heat out of the room is a good first step.

Probably a portable air conditioner will work provided it is gutsy enough. But you need to setup the room so you keep the heat out and the cool in. We created some thermal curtains from two queen bed flat sheets and a king bed Doona that we use in Winter for our snug. With our reverse cycle air con It can be 20 degrees in the snug and 12 in the rest of the house. We have a big open area so we haven’t really used it in Summer.

For our upstairs bedroom we use a Vornado DC fan that seems pretty good in bringing in the cold air overnight. We also open up all the external doors and run the extraction fan in the bathroom. This acts as a chimney removing the hot air and drawing in the cold.

Also I have a cold shower before going to bed and get my hair wet. Turn yourself into an evaporative cooler.

Best of luck. I hate being too hot either. At least with the cold you can rug up.

  • Check out those slimline window aircon, easy to install and non destructive. I beleive door can work too but prob need to fashion up an adapter.

  • check out onlyfans
    good website for onlyfans
will definitely get the circulation going in the bedroom

  • Maybe try placing a pedestal fan at the sliding door that is opened at night to suck in the cooler air? But be prepared for insects and creepy crawlies coming into your room if there is no flyscreen mesh installed. The two-fan setup sounds feasible.

  • I like feeling cool air on me (so not sure if a circulator is best because I should be pointing those to the ceiling?).

The only way to get "cool" air is with an air conditioner.

Fans do not do anything in enclosed spaces because the air there is already in equilibrium. If you have a door or window, a fan may help if your room is hotter than the area outside. You could use a fan to draw in air from a window (either by putting it directly in front of an open window, which would create a gust of cooler air, or by putting the fan facing outwards at your door, which will draw in cooler air more naturally due to the pressure differential).

People buy and sell portable air conditioners all the time. You could easily pick one up off Marketplace or Gumtree for like $100-150. You basically have two options, either a pedestal fan that's $15, or an air conditioner that's $100-150. Any other type of fan (e.g. an "air circulator", one of those Dyson bladeless fans…etc. are all just marketing gimmicks, they are just fans and perform the same function).

  • Seeing your room is small the best option is a box fan which can sit on the ground at your open door to suck in cool air. You can change the fan louvre to direct the cool air up which should push hot air out the top of the open door. I do this and it works.
