Was very interested until reading about needing proprietary discs. What a screw up from Bosch. I'm assuming that if those discs stop being made, the grinder is useless. Also that those discs are more expensive than smith and arrow, etc.

    • Yeah, they're well regarded, but I personally feel the same. You can get adaptors though - about $35 - but the depth of the adaptor means your disc is lower than the guard.

I think the main reason for the new tech is the speed of changing discs; it's said to be much faster.

      • it's said to be much faster.

Good one for Ikea shoppers and alike but other people just swap or replace the disc by hand, it takes a few seconds.

        • Or do what I've done and buy half a dozen grinders, and instead of changing discs just grab the grinder with the right disc already on it.

If I was using a grinder in a fab shop though I'd be very interested.

      • I have an x-lock and normal grinder. Love the x-lock for speed of changing discs, don't need tools, but discs do cost a bit more, but then my time costs even more. Makita also make x-lock grinders. If you work in a fab shop and go through alot of the same discs e.g grinding welds, etc , it' not for you, if you need to change discs quick without tools like when I was working on my roof it was very handy. Other time was when I was installing my pool fence, needed a metal cut disc, metal grind and a masonary disc, X-lock was very handy, no tools needed to change discs.

I have a normal grinder also if I had to a lot of the same e.g grind welds for my new steel fence, next project.

There are no licensing fees for the system, hence makita also make x-lock grinders.

      • I suspect the main reason is the Gillette razor / nespresso coffee pod / printer cartridge business model.

I ordered but had the same concern. I read one comment about adapters being available. Won’t use it much but will come in handy so I thought for this price worth a try. Bunnings had the discs for $11 down from $40 a while ago, if that deal comes up again I’ll stock up.

I wouldnt be so worried, Bosch introduced the sds shank which is used by everyone nowadays and Makita also make xlock grinders, so it's becoming an standard of sorts.

The xlock discs also work in normal grinders (just not the other way) so discs makers can target the standard.

Seems a good deal but I need 230mm.

  • Good price. But you have to weigh up the value of a 6 year Bosch warranty against only 90 days here.

    • Not sure how it works but I was able to register the drill driver they had in their last deal through my Bosch account and it seemed to be fine. Time will tell.

    • Doesn’t matter - consumer law trumps the 90 day warranty.
But in saying that, why are they promoting their 90 day guarantee - is this a brand new product or refurbished one? If it’s brand new, then Bosch’s warranty would apply.

        Bosch’s warranty would apply

It's a grey product so I don't think that Bosch Australia will honour any support.

Good price. Proprirtry discs are its downfall though…

  • Strongly advise against it. Discs cost will have you regretting.

Plus, the said changing speed save is very minimal, 5 seconds vs 10 seconds sounds like double. But in reality, you lucky to change one disc per hour even in heavy task. And if Home DIY, you are lucky to even use up a disc per day.

I've had one of these for a few years (I think paid $99.00 with case/few disks/googles/gloves). Burned through a grinding disk dismantling an ancient Hills Hoist. Yup, disks are pricey, and sometimes you can find a decent deal trough amazon or Bunnings. Word of advice: don't wear shorts using an angle grinder. I found out the hard way.

  • Corded AND proprietary discs. Just to make sure jobs are as much a pain in the ass as possible.

  • Good workhorse.
But I never knew that system existed until I had all my grinders converted to the Milwaukee flip nut system.
Hard to find compatible discs for folks in the sticks.

I'm gonna give a bit of love for this unit only based on the pre='x-lock' model - only because of my preference for this form factor in using as a sander for external house sanding. I'm talking Queenslander houses and weatherboards. It's hard to find a light, ergonomic (thin, easy to hold, low noise, low vibration), low power consumption (when using for extended periods sanding), 125mm (light, right width for boards and the under part). Add Bosch brand quality, does not get super hot, already said low vibration buzz. Furthermore they Bsoch do this for a very fair price. Don't need the kick ass, big wheel sander/grinder? Probably not. Get this easy to use comfortable unit. Love my Bosch grinder will buy again even if it is some new X-lock standard probably makes life so much easier changing sanding pads - which you have to do every half hour or so sanding boards. End love.

  • Xlock discs can work with any grinder. So if you get this one, stock up on it discs and if the grinder fails then you'll still have discs for other grinders.
This same mob sells xlock disc sets for a decent price.
