Upgrading from Pixel 4a (with 5g) to Pixel 8/8 Pro/8a (if It Comes out) - Best Deal?

Hi all,

As the title suggests, I'm interested to know if you think it's worth upgrading to one of the new Pixel 8 phones, 8, 8 Pro, or the inevitable 8a (or have they discontinued the #a line?)

My 4a works fine and am still quite happy with it, especially with the free Google Photos storage (I can live with the reduced quality, as it mostly holds family memories, holidays etc.).

I've been thinking about possibly upgrading though and keeping the 4a in the background in my drawer or something, and using the Resilio app to sync and continue the free Google Photos, rather than waiting for the 4a to brick or lost it etc.

Thoughts? And what''s the best deal or likely the best deal for Pixel phones?

Thanks!

There literally is a frontpage deal for the 8/8 Pro right now lmao…

As for your other question, imo yes it is worth upgrading as the 4a 5G is no longer officially supported in terms of updates.

    • Haha thanks. I don't know how I missed that. Thanks!

  • If it works fine and you're happy with it, the only reason I'd update is for software updates (particularly security updates). Otherwise, why bother?

Phones tend to last a long time these days, it's always the battery that dies first. If it's going ok then I'd stay with it. Just make sure everything is backed up.

    • Yeah fair enough. I had some further reading, and the really critical security concerns, i.e. banking apps, are pretty up to date with the latest Android so should be okay there.

Yeah, might stay. I remember the OG Pixel 2 ozb deal a few years ago, dreaming that'll happen again haha.

  • In terms of deals, just keep an eye out at JBHIFI, Google Store or your preferred retailer. Yes there was a price rise on the 8 this year, but the sales bring it back down to the Pixel price range of previous years ($200-350 off) current retail. on sale every 2nd month or whatever…

In terms of photo storage, yes people are keeping their old pixels and use a file transfer app for that Google Photos Backup. Anyway there are other ways such as just manually transferring them to your pc and using another cloud service. (a lot of people would have Microsoft/Office 365 anyway)

    • Maybe I'll wait and see if 8a is in the works and/or the next 'online sale'.

True, I'm kinda stuck (but also happy) with the Google ecosystem, so am very happy with Google Photos and have Dropbox for everything else, plus it's pretty seamless compared to manually transferring them over.

      Thank you nonetheless!
