Where can we find this? I tried Optus and Harvey Norman website and this offer could not be found.

    • +7

      https://www.harveynorman.com.au/optus-byo

The max cancellation fee is $828 plus pro-rated charges up to the end of the first billing period, but some suggested that they can get this waived if they cancelled straightaway.

      • +2

System us weird and you might need to try multiple support agents. I got two phones ended up paying $828 and $792 and have no idea how they got the $792 price.

        • 34.5*23 is about that.

        • Hi Mujali, did you just get it now or are you referring to a previous deal when you got it?

      • -1

This is on the website as below, 1656 min plan cost. How do we get 828

"Customers who sign up to a new Optus $69 SIM only plan in store at Harvey Norman, Domayne or Joyce Mayne during the offer period will also be eligible to purchase a Google Pixel 8 Pro 128GB device with a $1699 discount applied upfront to the cost of the device at point-of-sale. • maybe they've changed contract terms this year

        • +6

Read Critical Information Summary for $69 24 month SIM Only plan:
Maximum plan cancellation fee - Does not include additional device payments (if applicable) for $69/month is $828

          • +1

@huntabargain: Thanks got it , this could be a good deal. and then remain on amaysim, as they have amazing yearly plans and international roaming from 20-70 dollars per year.

            • @HpS81: better, dodo mobile $10 (optus coverage 4/5g) unlimited talk, text and when included data suns out, unlimited at 1mbs (tested fast enough for streaming netflix SD like they most all offer)

            • @HpS81: why should one remain on amaysim ? is the phone locked to optus network??

          • @huntabargain: It says does not include "additional device payments". does this mean we need to pay the device seperately to HN?? Is there any terms and contd from HN?

  • +4

Can you cancel and only pay $830 like last year?

    • +1

According to the CIS, sounds like it.

      • +1

Sounds good! But last year we got a $150 voucher as well when signing up on launchday so might be worthwhile waiting?

        • +1

          How does this work?
Sign up and cancel immediately? Then pay $800 odd for a $1700 phone? Sounds like yes. Half of $69 x remaining months so 34.50 * 23 = $793 (plus initial 69 = $862.50?). If so, that's a great way to pay for an outright phone then.

            • @denserham: I wanna wait for confirmation, but I'm gonna repeat and upgrade.

          • +10

@slankets: Optus/Google is subsidising the cost of the phone, hoping most of the buyers will stick with them for 24 months. I would think most of the cancellations would come from those who saw the deal on OZB.

          • @slankets: Is it worth upgrading after Pixel Pro 7?

Last year HN gave me the 256GB by mistake.

Google just replaced my phone a month ago under warranty, so I basically have a new Pixel 7 Pro. No idea how much they're worth on the used market?

But I'd be downgrading to 128GB.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: But only if you're using more than 128GB. With cloud storage being so cheap (if not free) these days I never get anywhere near it. I hate the thought of only having stuff on my phone given how easy they are to damage/lose…and if you have it backed up in the cloud do you need 256GB?

            • @[Deactivated]: Guy on page2 confirmed it's only $100 extra to get upgraded to the 256gb model when signing up :) no need to downgrade.

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: not really worth it mate . unless you can sell your 7 pro for a good price. you have to factor in the accessories you have to get your for the new phone plus the time invested to set it up. think about it. i wouldn't

        • +1

"This offer is not available with any other offers,"

          • +1

@aveeno bb: Yes what I am saying is after the 19th there might be a new better offer.

            • +1

@denserham: From other similar deals, it became more difficult to get the offer as well as the gift card, so I would say unlikely.

  • +2

Screenshot says "Ends 19th September 2023". Typo?

  • Anyone know if we can get the 256gb using this promotion and pay the difference?

    • -3

Call your local store and find out.

    • +5

Pixel 7 pro they let you pay $150 to upgrade.

    • +2

Yep, went into the store and paid $100 for the 256gb model

  • Does anyone know if the billing comes from HN or Optus?

  • +1

So you need to physically go into Harvey Norman, order phone through this deal and then the next day (for example) you can cancel and only pay half the cost of the phone when it is delivered next week?

    • +7

You'd be given the phone in person at store when you sign up. No waiting around for delivery.

You could also cancel as soon as you get home on the same day.

      • +5

Isn't the phone not out until the 10th so they cannot give you it today?

        • -4

So wait until it's out next week then sign up?

      • +4

        @tryonthis But it's a pre order atm

  • +1

I did this promo last year for the Pro 7 and was able to upgrade to the 256gb, I think it was about $200? But things may have changed in the last year, who knows! :)

    • What kind of invoice/receipt did you receive for the phone?

I'm worried about warranty if Google ask for proof of purchase.

      • +2

Got the full receipt from HN, so is not an issue as far as i know.

        • +1

Is receipt has full amount or zero ?

      • +1

HN told me yesterday I'll get an invoice at pick up for warranty purposes.

How is the 8 Pro camera compared to iPhone 15 Pro Max camera?

    • +35

How is the 8 Pro camera compared to

Considering this phone only came out a few hours ago you might have to wait for a reliable review

    • +9

If history is any guide: iPhone 15 will be better for video, and Pixel 8 will be better for stills.

    • +13

Need to wait for reviews, but I'm guessing not $1,000 better.

  • +2

Anyone knows what the invoice will look like for salary sacrifice?

    • +1

No tax invoice was provided for a similar deal for P7P, so I would say no.

      • Fair enough given the phone is "free".

        • -2

Yeah those wanting to salary sacrifice, best to buy from where the purchase price is as close to full price as possible.

          • +1

@aveeno bb: what - surely not. youd still want the lowest price possible but with a tax invoice surely?

            • +10

@bobloblawlawblog: of course. sometimes if you buy from ebay using discount coupon, invoice normally says the full, inflated price, but you pay less. you get the full gst back, and the benefit of salary sacrifice.

other similar example, you may pay full price at JB/TGG etc, invoice say $1699, but may be you got cashback or discount etc. You pay less, but the salary sacrifice benefit is bigger cuz the invoice is based on the full price.

Summary - pay the lowest possible price. The benefit will be the greatest if the invoice price is close to the full price.

              • @aveeno bb: Doesn't sound legal

                • +7

@prhino: well, check with your lawyer then.

                • +1

@prhino: It's like saying you bought 15% off jb gift card, so actual money you paid is 15% less than the invoiced price. Is that legal?

              • +1

@aveeno bb: I did this with soooo many laptops. The Dell eBay deals worked a treat for salary sacrificing hahaha.

              • -4

@aveeno bb: Sounds a little bit like fraud. It's easy to commit on accident

                • @SpainKing: I don't understand how people think it's a fraud. It's usually just discounts given by an e-commerce site like eBay. Both the retailer and the buyer win, even the employer for tax purposes.

                  • -3

@aveeno bb: Fraud is defined by the Australian Government as 'Dishonestly obtaining a benefit, or causing a loss, by deception or other means'

In this case I believe you'd be gaining a benefit by lying to the Australian Taxation Office (lying = dishonest). The benefit is your reduced tax bill/increased reimbursement. The lie is claiming that the goods you paid for were sold at a higher price than they actually were.

If the RRP of my work boots is $300 but they're on sale for $100, you don't get to claim you spent $300 on boots that should be written off. If we went around quoting RRP in our tax invoices for every item OzBargainers would probably drain the treasury dry.

To summarise, you're meant to disclose the actual amount paid to the ATO, not the RRP of the goods. Not doing so is acting dishonestly and gaining a benefit. If the ATO inquired and looked at your bank statements they could see that the amount paid ≠ the amount you reported to them.

Can you see where I'm coming from?

                    • +2

@SpainKing: No I don't. If I bought $2,000 item and paid using $1,700 in cash and $300 as eBay voucher, I paid $2,000 in total. The seller received $2,000 and issues the tax invoice with the same amount.

                    • @SpainKing: This is the worst nonsense ive heard for a long time lol

                    • @SpainKing: You are basically saying anyone that buys from eBay using a coupon and apply for salary sacrifice or get gst back through TRS are committing fraud. I don't think govt or customs are that dumb.

                    • @SpainKing: If the invoice says $2000 and it was paid via various means (credit card, PayPal, voucher, coupon, gift cards etc), how am I even supposed to claim salary sacrifice for any amount other than $2,000??? If the seller states GST based on that amount on the invoice they've issued, that's the amount I am eligible to claim for tax.

                      • +2

@aveeno bb: Initially you used the words "discount coupon" and "you pay less". Now you're saying "voucher"

Using the words you used implies that a $300 coupon (which discounts the $2000 price to $1700, like if you ticked "Apply Coupon" on Amazon) counts as you paying $2000. Your example was eBay coupon. I assume they work the same way where the coupon means you don't have to pay that amount

If it was a gift card (like "voucher" implies) sure, it might not be fraud because you're giving up $300 in buying power. But if it's a coupon (like you said and would've been the context up until this point) I believe that's fraud

If you paid using multiple means (PayPal + cash + credit card) and you lost $2000 in your own money, you could report that as $2000, I agree. But a coupon is a discount, not a form of payment

Please don't insult me for mere disagreement about how to do taxes. It's quite rude and adds to the negativity that pervades this site

    • +1

Salary sacrifice what - $0? You aren't paying anything for the device.
The only component that you are paying for is the phone plan, so maybe you can explore options for salary sacrifice on that.

  • Sounds interesting this deal.

Curious to hear what people do after they cancel with Optus. Do they sign up with another provider and sell their existing phone?

Usually I'll sign up with JB and use the gift cards towards the phone purchase price

    • +1

I’ll just keep my existing 365 day plan and sell my old phone.

For someone who can use the data, $32.50 a month for 100gb isn’t the worst, but that’s not me. I’m on a cheap catch 365 day plan and I’m fine with that.

    • I use Lebara 360 day prepaid card on my phone, it's quite cheap per month when you divide the cost by 12. It has 200gb data bank and I maxed it out so I switched down to the lowest plan, most of the data I use is just on Wi-Fi.

On my work mobile I use Boost Prepaid which was $20pm but a few months ago increased to $22pm. It's the best value for Telstra network.

  • "Recontracts and rate plan changes are excluded."

So, If already on Optus sim only plan can I still get this offer?

    • +1

If you are thinking of just cancelling it straightaway, just get a new number. No problem.

      • -1

But they do a credit check etc so that might impact credit score?

        • +1

yes they will do a check. whether it matters or not, up to them to decide.

        • Correct me if I'm wrong. Those credit check shouldn't affect it too much. Seeing that it a a soft enquiry.

          • @Fasian: Are you certain that it's a soft enquiry? Latitude seems to show up more times than I'm aware of in my credit history, so I'd lean towards it being a hard enquiry, certainly in combination with HN.

Personally I wouldn't give Latitude the privilege of my business ever again, considering Ive recently received a debt recovery notice from a 3rd party - at no point did Latitude ever attempt to contact me regarding this, nor do I have any clue what it is in relation to, given I've not used their services in what would be approaching a decade!

            • @parad0x: In terms of the phone plan. I have signed up to a Vodafone plan in the past. Never showed up in my history.

              • @Fasian: See, when I last joined Vodafone, they had a deal where you could get an el-cheapo droid for $1. Apparently my credit check was OK for the plan, but not ok to pay $1 upfront on top.. This showed up on my credit report

  • wait so how does this work? I get the $69 month plan with a google pixel 8 pro, and then cancel straightaway?

    • You can, if you want, and pay out the cancellation fee.

      • ahhh ok, and I'm guessing we have to wait for a bit, since the phone is only pre-order right now? Or can we do it now, or is it better to wait until we can get the phone straight away?

        • +1

sometimes phones are available earlier than official date. may be check with your local store when you can pick it up and decide.

          • +4

@aveeno bb: Just contacted them, and they said they should have stock in a week or 2, so might try to get it then. Thanks for your help! :)

      • How much is the cancellation fee usually?

        • I'm seeing $828 in the comments above

  • +18

goodbye iphone 15 pro max, hellooooo pixel 8 pro.

    • what's your main reasons?

      • +11

Bought the iPhone from the Apple Store. I can do a 14 day return, and then hop on a Pixel 8 Pro for free with this deal from Optus. I pay about this for my monthly phone bill anyway so it's fine. The difference between $2569 (iphone) and $800 (max payout for cancellation at Optus, or $69 a month if I stay on the plan) is a huge amount. Basically flights for the fam to Japan for a holiday.

        • +2

Wait - you bought the iPhone hoping there would be a better deal on something else?
