If it has the same fingerprint sensor as the 7 forget it.

    • It does in fact have the same, at the very least still an optical sensor

      • Are you sure? They were supposed to improve this. I haven't checked the final release specs though.

        • +1

its different hardware but same tech(optical)

          • @backupper1: Any websites stating they upgraded the shitty fingerprint sensor from P7?

    • +1

      Where?

        • I mean where did you this?

            • +2

              @cacique: Lol. Not surprising.

I didn't ruin it. I haven't signed up yet. If I do I'll be keeping the plan anyway :)

Everyone should have waited until the phone was actually released before cancelling. I guess they didn't want to pay that 1 week of prorated phone plan even though they were getting a ridiculously cheap phone

HN staff will say anything though, does this mean Optus have changed the CIS?

The deal on the HN page is still linking to https://hndgwww2.blob.core.windows.net/hnau/gift_card_voice_…

              • @chromium: I don't see why HN would have an issue - Their part is just providing the phone side of the deal, they would not have any influence over Optus T&C.

I can't see Optus changing their T&Cs just for this deal (especially as they ran it last year and let it run the same this year).

The only issue here would be a disgruntled manager not liking what he sees. In this case, as @Whatisthatvelvet suggests, try a different store.

            • +2

              @cacique: Try a different store?

            • +2

@cacique: Changed it to what? Did you get any details?

                • @cacique: What are they changing though? The cancellation is with Optus, nothing to do with HN, they're just taking the signups and providing the phones

I might go to HN and suss it out, I probably want to keep the plan anyway. It's still a pretty good deal

                  • @chromium: Exactly - I cant see how they can patch it, outside of pulling the deal completely.

    • what does this even mean?

"made the minimum cost out the cost of the phone"

      ??

That looks the same as the ones in the OP

    • +1

      Which part is new? lol

    • +2

looks the same to me as before, whats changed?

right below it: Read Critical Information Summary for $69 24 month SIM Only plan still the same too

    • +2

lol it doesnt matter. What matters is T&C's at Optus which are still the same

  • +2

people who are placing an early today; why are you cancelling before getting the phone?……??

    • +3

i was thinking the same. Imagine getting slugged with the cancellation fees and no getting the phone.

      • +1

Yeah, I probably wouldn't want to risk cancelling it before I had the phone in my hands

    • +1

So they don't get charged the $69 for first month.

      • +3

its pro-rata anyway, and if they're so concerned they should just wait till 12 oct and place an order then… it's riskier getting cancellation fees and no phone.

        • might be oos

          • -1

            @truebunny: LOL

Last year's was better, and wasn't OOS

            • @[Deactivated]: if you read last year's thread it went OOS on 19th. Also percentage wise it wasn't better. There were other comparable deals from Google store JB etc. But this time this is the only deal, rest are abomination of deal

            • @[Deactivated]: @Adelv see the problem now?

    • +9

on this note, can you people not tell HN OR Optus that you intend to cancel immediately when signing up?? less is more…

Heck I'd won't even call Optus, I'd just port out and wait for the final bill after you get the phone!

  • +47

STOP ASKING HN store people about cancellation and cost of terminating the contract. The sales rep commissions might be clawed back, so they will say whatever to save them from not making a dime from the sale of the phone to you.

Last year 000s of people got the Pixel 7 Pro on the same deal along with a $150GC on launch day , if you dont understand what you are doing and never signed up a mobile contract in your life and have no credit history, this deal is not for you. This year its more enticing because the phone is now $1699 and not $1299. last year after google store coupons, discounts and google one credit the phone was $850 or so anyway and $828 using optus, so there was no rat race of Ozbargainers trying to make a quick buck. Don't ruin it for everyone as you haven't got the phone yet and don't want this offer to be pulled by HN

  • +1

Hardley Normal salesman told me his mates are on this deal and he also gets this deal

  • Now im confused.
Judging by comments HN haven't changed the offer?
Would of been more helpful if the person just changed the comment to say they were wrong rather than delete the old comment.

    • +3

It sounds like he went to a store with a grumpy manager, and that it's still the same.

      • +1

right, like the comment above just don't be stupid enough to flaunt that you are going to cancel the plan the minute you get the phone and u'll be alright.

  • +4

Please buy me a house Gerry

      • +5

        That's Daddy Gerry to you

        • +2

Daddy Gerry pls buy me a house and release my family from your basement. They've been in there long enough!

      • +1

You think Gerry can use the internet? I would imagine he gets print outs like Trump.

    • +3

I find it hard to believe they didn't think this through and realise people were going to cancel the plan to get the phone at almost half price. Unless they were aware and it was a price they were willing to pay to get more people signed up to Optus.

      • +3

They are 100% aware of this, in fact it has happened numerous times in the past. They didn't care enough then to modify the contract then but now phone value is $1699. This could be where they draw the line.

        • +8

I think we all draw the line at $1699. Google is delulu, they think they're Apple.

          • +5

@hardcoreshilling: exactly, I feel like goole is reimbursing HN a bit in this deal. 1699 RRP is outrageous. Just think about it. Last year p7p was 828 + 150HN. This year google increased the price so absurdly (should have been 150 max increase not 400) for little changes - same FP sensor, same main camera and zoom camera sensor. All the gimmicky things that they had in launch event are software based. Now that they have increased the price to 1700, people think wow a new device at 50% + off, that's a great deal. But they forget what they are getting compared to last year, which is similar phone with some tweaks and they don't have to provide a 150HN gift card as well. I am one of these people and still bought it because I think I can sell my p6p for 650ish. and 200 for a device which u use daily for many hours is worth it.

I Had a order problem and I had to talk to the HN manager at the store a month ago and she had no idea what ozbargain website was.

  • The staff have another scam going or Harvey Norman. So you pay for the extended warranty and before it expires you send the phone off for an assessment and they give you a replacement phone or credit for a replacement phone. So the salesman was telling me he gets the iPhone and discounted extended replacement warranty then they give him credit for the phone whatever was the amount or a couple hundred lower then he buys a new phone with that. He says Harvey Norman doesn't pay for the phone. They make money on the extended warranty and the guys that assess the phone refurbish them and sell them to poorer countries. So Gerry bends over everyone

    • +3

"Harvey Norman doesn't pay for the phone".

      What on earth?

I have no love for Gerry but you don't have this right at all.

Gerry isnt making money selling extended warranty to staff at cost.

The extended warranty people are not going to just accept your phone as faulty for no reason. It's money out of their pocket if they do.

      • What I'm saying it apparently 90% of the time they will give you credit. Staff get discounts it's not only for them. Extended warranty don't lose, Gerry don't lose just the consumer

      • +1

Extended warranty don't fix phones. They take your phone refurbish it and sell it to others so they make money. You get credit for a new phone and most of the time you pay more on top and Gerry don't lose cause he gets money for selling extended warranty which is about $260 on a $1600 phone

        • Its like you think there is some magical money making idea going on here.

"Extended warranty don't fix phones. They take your phone refurbish it and sell it to others so they make money."

They don't just accept you phone as a warranty just because you want to return it. They don't make money on customers that actually put in a claim. They make roughly 10% of the sale price of the warranty. About $30 in your example.

"Gerry don't lose just the consumer"

How on earth does the consumer lose in this?

Also, you said this was staff. That staff member got it at cost so the store isn't winning either.

Before you keep going with this: I used to work there, i used to sell extended warranties. I worked handling the returns to the extended warranty company.

Don't buy extended warranties, they are almost pointless in Australia.

          • @Duff5000: Maybe I can't articulate myself properly but let it be the way you say. No need to argue. Can't wait to get my phone in my oily hands

            • +2

@Daddy Chill: I'd advise washing those oily hands clean as you don't want to drop your new toy, unless you're planning to get an extended warranty 😉

Jokes aside, I don't bother with extended warranties. Got it once on a washing machine and technically they fulfilled their side of the agreement when said machine died, but the time wasted on several phone calls, and then being without a machine for weeks left me wondering what the point was, so that was my one and only time buying an extended warranty. (I now own a quality German Bosch washing machine, it should outlive me)

I got a similar deal with the S23 earlier this year when it launched. Signed up, received phone same day and also cancelled plan same day.

Reckon I'd have any trouble doing the same again for this deal?

Credit is fine, just more to do with the fact I did something similar less than a year ago.

    • Call the Telco and ask :-)

I don't see why it would be a big deal. As far as they (the Telco) is concerned, you are doing everything that is asked of you i.e. paying the "buy out" cost. Nothing illegal or dodgy about doing this. You got a good deal on a phone but prefer to pay it out. Asking for the initial months fee back might be harder as that requires management auth.

      • If I go the HN route I'll just try it anyway. If it doesn't work, can do it in my partners name.

    • How much did you pay for the S23 after discount? 8 Pro seems too large for me, so going for either S23 or P8.

      • It was on a similar deal to this when the s23 launched. Just had to pay the cancellation fee.

        • Was the cancellation fee $828 also? Might wait for the S24 launch in Jan 2024 if thats the case.

          • @xdigger: If you're gonna pay $828 for it, may as well be for a phone with RRP of $1699. S23 RRP is $1199 I believe?

  • Sounds like a great deal i just had a few questions:

    1. This will affect your credit score if you were to go with this plan? (And not if you cancel the plan)?
    2. Can you pay the penalty fee via HN gift cards?

    tyty :)

    • +4
      1. The credit check is done at the time of signing up - whether you choose to stay with the plan or cancel is irrelevant to credit check.
      2. No, the penalty fee is to Optus. Much like you cannot pay ATO with iTunes gift cards.
      • I hope the ATO is going to return those iTunes gift cards I sent out then!

  • Went in to HN this morning and signed up for the deal but only got the contract for Optus and no paperwork regarding getting a free phone but told me they will call next week when they have the phone in stock!!!!!!!!!🤔

    • That's normal. No need to worry.

      • +2

That is not normal, there must be a HN contract also created.
They emailed me mine, I also got a paper copy.

You should walk out of the store with two sets of documents.

        • Yeah I got one for the phone and one for the plan.

        • +4

Sorry, should really have elaborated :)
          *Normal, depending on the salesperson.

The store will have the OP's order in the system/s. HN will just attach device IMEI to the order when they pick up the device and provide it (relevant docs) then.

Was a brand rep for few years. Visited HN stores during device launches and that's how many of them do it.

OP, if you prefer you can of course request the 2nd copy before then.

    • +1

I received a receipt for the phone pre-order at checkout.

  • -2

Is it me or has HN removed the promo from their website? Anyone else can see the promo?

    • +1

      Its just you

    • It was never listed anywhere on the website to begin with when I did a dig yesterday. They only listed their bonus GC or other sim only offers.

      • Its on the pixel phone page top right corner

        • +2

Oh it's an Optus ad that's blocked by my browser adblock lmao. This probably just serves as further reinforcement that HN doesn't have any control over the T&Cs and it's all Optus.

  • Are you guys all transferring your numbers to Optus for the plan? Or just getting a new number? Hmmm I think I just answered my own question..

    • I'm a first timer at this strategy but it seems like everyone gets a new number then cancels it (ports out first I guess?)

I have a 365 day cheap prepaid SIM which I will be going into this.

  • +1

Just went and signed up in store, relatively painless and the staff members were delightful.

The deal is definitely still on, they have signs up all over the place about it. I won't be cancelling the plan anyway. I also paid the $100 to get a 256GB

Porting my number took a couple of minutes and I'm now using the Optus sim in my Pixel 5 until I get the 8 Pro

    • Same here, took less than 20mins, got a new number. Haven't pay the $100 yet though, rep said I can pay when I pick up the phone.

  • +3

Just signed up at HN and $100 256gb upgrade when I pick up… The sales person was an absolute legend. He actually told me how good the deal was when I was having a browse of the phones. Literally took 15mins and out the door.
Said I'd get a call if they're allowed to sell them earlier.

    • They will post the phone or pickup from HN ?

      • +1

You have to pick it up

  • -6

Bit the bullet and signed up.

The HN staff told me not to cancel the plan until at least I had the phone in my hands.

Not sure to listen to them or not…

    • +9

Why were you even talking about cancellation? lol

        • +19

          Security!

Collect this man's OzB card as you escort him out please.

        • +5

Thought you'd "be real and just let them know"? Geezus, ban yourself from all future OzB deals please.

    • +1

TBH, it something i would've done anyway to secure the phone before canceling.

  • +3

My local Harvey's had a $99 plan for Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Watch 2…. salesperson said payout for cancellation was $1188

    • Not Bad considering the watch is $649?

      • I believe it is for the Wi-Fi only version, so a retail price of $549.

    • +1

Depends if you want the watch

      1188 - 828 = $360

      • Difference is $260 as it's Pixel 8 Pro 256GB

        • I was also offered this in Joyce Mayne and the offer on the screen was for the 128 GB model.

          • @mister_snrub: I was told it's 256GB model. I didn't take that offer so maybe I heard it wrong or the rep gave the incorrect info.

    • Not a great deal if you plan on keeping the plan. $720 extra for a $649 watch, presuming it's the LTE one

    • Upvoted for a wish they do a cheaper deal on just the Pixel 8…

    • I was also offered this but wanted to keep the plan so declined. If you were cancelling it would have been a decent deal to get the watch for $360 more.

    • What are the models of both phone and watch please?
      128+LTE?

  • Probably a very broad and hard to answer question, but what is Optus network like these days? I'm with Vodafone at the moment and have been for the last decade, bar a 2 year stint in there with Telstra.

Just looking at their coverage map of Melbourne, it seems they aren't as advanced as Vodafone or Telstra with 5G.

This deal is very tempting and I'd probably stay with Optus to get the P8P for free on that plan, just worried I'll have crap reception.
