Looks like they're matching Harvey Norman:

I remember when Gerry was the Big Bad rich person I wanted to avoid buying from. Now I boycott him by buying from…. Bezos. What have I become?! D:

      • +51

you enemy's enemy is also your enemy.

      • +1

But it was a good price 😭

      • +4

Yeah but Gerry hasn't brought us such notable events as: Katy Perry In "Space"! (100km high, only 25% of the altitude of the ISS, or 0.5% of the average GPS satellite)

      • +1

Just price match with JB instead. His loss for being a craphead.
EDIT: I am aware so far that JB doesn’t sell this. Please don’t catch me out on this fact.

      • +2

Gerry brought GST to overseas purchases for us as well as then took tax payer money during covid when he made record profits and then never returned them when he was asked to. There are different levels of bad.

    • +1

Thanks, great tip, was able to get one near me!

    • just missed out on this bummer :(

  • Is it worth it getting this if i already have a google streamer is it lots better?

    • +4

Depends on your use. If the Google one does everything you need, then no, don't bother…but yes, it's lots better.

      • +6

Specs wise. Unless your gaming or using emulators you’re not going to notice a difference in real world usage.

And even for emulation I’d argue an old Optiplex is better option.

    • +10

my personal opinion - no. But then again I use a mini pc (intel n100 based) for streaming and local gaming. It passes through Dolby Atmos and every other audio format you can think of (plus it will of course convert them to stereo whatever you want if you don't have a surround sound processor or soundbar), it does support up to HDR10+ video output but it does NOT support Dolby Vision (no Home Theatre PC does, as it is not licenced).
I have windows and linux apps or plugins for most major streaming services (I only use Netflix and Youtube really, occasionally SBS and ABC iview), otherwise I stream from my local Jellyfin library using with the Jellyfin Player or the Jellyfin plugin for Kodi.
Mini PC cost me $180 2 years ago.
For local games playing it handles emulators up to Wii U/ Dreamcast / PS2 upscaled to 1080p nicely. If I want to play AAA games from my PC I stream from that PC to this using moonlight.

      • +1

How do you control yours? I have a spare n95

        • +8

I was using a USB wifi remote control (which I'd previously used with my amlogic s905 android media player for years.. (similar to the Simplecom RT150 wifi mouse on amazon) but a few months ago I made a HDMI-CEC to USB adaptor from a github project (cost about $30) so my tv remote also controls the mini PC when using the media player apps etc. For games I have an old xbox 360 joystick connected.

          • +5

            @gizmomelb: updating this.
I chose the mini PC as it supports AV1 hardware decoding, which is a CODEC I'm seeing used more often as it shrinks video so much better than x265 and doesn't need a licence (ie: x265 support was removed from synology as they didn't want to have to pay the licence fee)
I use Batocera (a linux based emulation front end, which has Kodi 'built in' and I use the Batocera Unofficial Addon script to add in a heap of other features (flatpak installs etc.) and even desktop mode so I can use chrome browser etc. if I want to. Plus in a usb wifi/bt mouse and you can run old windows games in WINE as well. You can set Kodi as first boot app so you dont even need to see the batocera front end (or just use LibreElec and boot direct into Kodi , but you don't have the flexibility of desktop and apps).

          • +1

@gizmomelb: Do you have a link to the Github you used?

      • So how does one play dolby vision rips ? Ive tried directly through the tv via network and still no luck. Plex doesnt seem to support it either

        • DV rips should still have the HDR10 data embedded so it's a just a try different media players and hope.
I have found that windows support for DV is 'better' because you can usually run various CODEC packs to handle badly encoded DV (ie: the ripper has stripped out the HDR10 data to save space), but if you absolutlely need DV output then any android media box with the licence should just work (even the cheap $50 ones).

          • +1

@gizmomelb: DoVi profile 8 does not have hdr10 metadata

            • @Bruceflix: @Bruceflix ahh thanks for the info. It's usually easy enough to source alternate encodes of public domain media with the full data that your screen / audio gear needs (or transcode it with plex or jellyfin).

        • If you want to be able to play dolby vision profile 7 (usually bluray remux) there are only a few devices capable. Ugoos amb6+ flashed with coreelec is one of them

        • +1

I use ugoos am6b+ . Ignore this nvidia shield 2019(!!!) e-waste. My CoreELEC flashed Ugoos am6b+ Plays DV remuxes perfectly with Jellyfin server. Admiring the MGS2 name btw

        • +1

I play them using Kodi on my NVIDIA Shield Pro

      • +1

sounds like a wife's worst nightmare

        • not if she's a gamer.

    • +4

The use-case might be niche; for me, I want to be able to stream my 4K content from my NAS to my TV, with Dolby Vision/Atmos, and nothing else can do this outside of the Shield unless you have your PC directly connected to your TV.

      • +2

Biggest issue with using a mini PC with windows / Linux is for older people you have a clunky UI compared to something that runs Android TV aka the Shield

        • +1

No, you install LibreElec and then the UI is big and suitable for old people. Plug in a USB IR receiver so you can use it with a remote control.

        • Of course you need your PC directly connected to the TV, same as if you're plugging in a shield or other android media player (btw: my old Amlogic S905 no name based android media player could handle DV decoding quitw happily, I decided to replace it with a mini PC though as after a bit of testing I couldn't discern the difference between DV and HDR10+ on my TV (LG OLED.. cant recall model number ottomh) and the PC reponsiveness was light years faster than any of the media players I tried (and I did have access to an nvidia shield around 2023, I wasn't that impressed with it tbh).

You can use a USB wifi mouse like I did on both my PCs, OG Xbox and later Amlogic android based media players.

When I went back to using a PC I made a HDMI-CEC to USB converter so I can use my TV remote control over HDMI-CEC - https://github.com/gkoh/pico-cec

Mostly I boot into Kodi and use the tv remote control to 'drive' it, I can exit KODI back into Batocera and then I use the xbox joystick to select and play games.

        • you don't boot direct into linux/windows desktop mode.. you use a front end program that is specifically designed for a '10 foot interface' so that you can control it easily on a tv screen without needing a mouse or keyboard.

I suggest you google 'libreelec' - you can install it to a USB stick and it'll boot directly into KODI (and you can have other media apps which you need to set up yourself), so easy to give it a try and see.

      • This is my use case.

      • Suggest you look into ugoos am6plus and corelogic set up. Cost me less than 160.

      • FireTV 4k sticks can do this (been using one for a few years now), but just got the Shield this sale and it's definitely better / more complete / has tons more options.

Steam Link streaming runs like crap on FireTV sticks though, it's smooth riding with the Shield.

    • It is much better than the google streamer for streaming games from your PC using Moonlight. If I wasn't using it for that I would go back to the google streamer. The shield uses android 11 so it feels a bit dated.

  • +10

God, I remember the SHIELD. That thing kicked ass. Still probably does. Whatever the last big major update like 3 or 4 years ago was poopoo'd mine for me. Made a bunch of emulators run shittier and a few different things and by then I had DevMode on Xbox and moved on anyway. But by God, it was incredible nearly 10 years ago having a tiny little box play GameCube games so well. Godspeed, NVIDIA SHIELD.

I must say though, it seems ridiculous to still be going for this price. They were 200 years ago and even that was more than I paid in 2016/2017 (yes, I know the 2019 refresh but still)

    • -4

Yeah. Dev mode is now free on Xbox too. More people need to know about it.

      • Damn, had no idea about it becoming free. Does it still have the three console limit? I might sign my main account up to it and throw DM on the other Xboxes in the house yet to join up. Got an X, two S's, and a couple Ones floating around. Only real problem with doing it on an Xbox One is the boot times take a hot (profanity) minute, hard to go back to. At least I did it via Turkey and paid like $2.50 or so, maybe less, even if I spent the full twenty though, I'd have got my money back ten fold over the years in use.

      • +2

Maybe I did something wrong, I'm not particularly fussed, but I just tried to sign up and it's still wanting to slug me $21, knowing me it probably goes live in a week or something and I didn't look lol

    • Wait, i can run emulators on my xbox? How?!

    • Yeah, I bought mine back in 2018. It was great when I purchased it but the enshitification cycle of Google TV drove this in device into the ground. I migrated myself to a more traditional Media PC to get away from the Google TV ecosystem. It now collects dust. So sad, as this device was so easy and simple to use.

      • +4

What enshitification cycle? My Shield is better and snappier today than the day I bought it many many years ago.

If you're talking about the home screen getting ads, that's a feature in my opinion. That's how I find out what has come out lately and to 'find' it.

  • -8

2019? But why? Whats this thing?

    • +18

      Whats this thing?

Nvidia Shield TV Pro 4K HDR Android TV Media Player

        • +12

Not running Android modified by Amazon.

          Higher performance.

Does this really matter? Up to you.

            • @Zeee: The problem is that no one really wants a high performance Android TV box that's not a console, Switch or Steam Deck.

All the manufacturers are making are the cheapest devices with 4K HDR Netflix support, a smooth interface (lol @ Chromecast after subsequent updates) and some smart home functionality. Higher-powered Android boxes for Kodi are for the shady side of the market (e.g. pirated sports streaming) which no reputable manufacturer wants to touch.

That's why the Nvidia Shield 2019 is still king today, because the performance was so far ahead of its time with the cast-off chips from the Switch 1.

        • +5

I went down this rabbit hole last week after setting up a 4k TV (I'd been on a 1080p TV up to then). Some of my legitimately format shifted backup video files in Dolby Vision and HDR10+ hevc mkv wouldn't play video (black screen but would have audio …. sometimes) through jellyfin on my fire TV stick 4k max. Spent hours looking into it, and found that "third party apps" were unable to access full decoders on it. The jellyfin plugin on Kodi on the fire stick handled things a bit better format wise, but a bit juddery on some high motion scenes. Also I just prefer the native jellyfin interface these days.

All the reading I could find was that Apple TV or NVIDIA shield Pro were the two best options for Dolby vision/HDR10+ with digital audio passthrough to my receiver. I'd just set up a camelcamelcamel alert for it a few days ago, and here we are!

          • -7

            @salem: Too complicated stuff u r doing… I have g5 lg… And fire stick max… What else do i need

            • @Zeee: I've only got the LG C5 . If the fire stick is playing all the media you have/want, and the streaming services you like, you don't need the NVIDIA.

            • @Zeee: You still have that problem. No Dolby Vision rips for you…

              • -5

                @goodwillN1: Whats that needed for

                • @Zeee: I have a G5 as well. Can't play shit on that. I also have the Fire Stick. Still not good. I am tempted to buy this over attempting to overwrite the software in one of the Dune boxes to get the Dolby Vision playback on videos not from streaming services .

Dolby Vision is needed to actually enjoy all that extra brightness you paid for in the G5.

                  • @goodwillN1: In short thsts just a codec… Why lg dont give us that?

                    • @Zeee: License fees. LG does support Dolby Vision and it is paid but their built in player is shit and can't play many formats. Not many good third party players available for it and they cannot access the licensed feature.

                      • @goodwillN1: Its a serious problem, pay so much and get both

                  • @goodwillN1: I have a c4 and this shield box, some or msot DV film are dark. The reason i bought dune hd 8k, and its all fine.

          • @salem: Pretty sure Shield Pro doesn't do HDR10+, I recall this from when I went down a similar deep dive after getting a Samsung OLED haha.

            • @rarelyscene: Then no good

            • @rarelyscene: Looks like you're right! HDR10 and Dolby Vision are the only ones mentioned. FFS, why is there no device that ticks ALL the boxes??? Lol. Anyway it's so much smoother than the fire TV 4k max was, and I don't think I've seen anything so far that's HDR10+ that didn't also have a Dolby vision option, so probably very small real world impact on me. Most annoying thing so far was needing to sign into Google before I could pair my Bluetooth keyboard which makes things like signing into Google easier….

              • +1

@salem: I think the Fire TV Cube 3 does both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, not sure if this includes all DV profiles though, my TV does not support it so I did not research any further. I believe TVs usually only support one or the other so as long as the device matches the TV then supporting both is not necessarily needed.

The other factor is whether the device passes through Dolby TrueHD and DTS:X if you have a capable audio setup, the Fire Cube did the former from release and I believe it got a firmware update to support the latter.

After I moved a year ago, my brother has my TV, while my sound system and Fire Cube are in storage so I'm not across the latest state of play. Was a fun little project at the time.

                • +1

@rarelyscene: My little rabbit hole with Perplexity AI had "third party" apps like Jellyfin being unable to access the Dolby vision components on Fire devices, including the cube. But top apps like Prime Video and Netflix maybe could? I didn't actually check those sources so maybe I got mislead by a hallucination. Either way I've got a Shield now and turned off ozbargain alerts for the Cube!

My receiver (Denon avc-X3800H) does do DTS dtsX etc, but I've yet to find content that has it (and I still need to wire up the rear speakers - it's winter now so getting in the ceiling won't kill me with heat stroke!)

  • +8

Back in 2023 i purchased this thinking they most likely bring a new one out not long after i bought it. Like clearing out stock for new shield. 2 years later still nothing.

    • Most likely waiting for the Switch 2 to release since it will probably have similar internals.

      • I doubt Nvidia could, now that the chips are now so much more expensive to fabricate (meaning they will keep a close eye on Switch 2 QA to minimize cast-offs, instead of putting out a $350+ Shield 2025) and there's so much money in AI.

    • -2

      They have discontinued

  • +1

This or Xiaomi mi box s 3rd gen?

  • I've been waiting for this to drop from the current crazy prices of $330-400.

    Cracking price, great deal.

  • +25

If you remember buying your Nvidia Shield in 2019, you did so in a world where:

Most people had never worn a mask in public.

AI was something you read about, not something that could write your emails.

Working from home was a rare perk, not a global necessity.

TikTok was just taking off, and "Zoom fatigue" didn’t exist.

The idea of a global pandemic shutting down the world sounded like science fiction.

In just six years, the world has changed so much that 2019 feels like a different era entirely. A new shield model is well overdue.

    • Yup

    • -1

In the current climate I'm surprised it's still $249.

Look at what Microsoft did with Xbox and the price increase.

Prices have gone up significantly for lots since then too (groceries, electricity etc) so $249 went a lot further back then too relatively speaking.

    • +1

You're trying too hard, so a pandemic and AI taking off?

  • hdr10 plus not support other wise good very good

  • Had 3 in all before and sold them all after frequent issues.

I started with the special edition kit that included the game controller that I purchased in the us. Then went with the newer tube and box, but more and more I had issues. The frequent slowdowns and display blackouts made me gave up the whole thing.

Switched all my main ones to Apple TV and secondary small tvs with google chromecast with tv and fire tv max. Pretty happy.

I personally wouldnt get this considering how outdated they are and my above experience.

    • Add: Random black screens is a well known, widespread issue in the Nvidia Shield community. Just google Nvidia Shield black screen.

  • +1

This is not at all the best streaming device.

Pending your needs and media source, Apple TV 4k produces better image and sound (countless tests down to pixels and colour reproduction) and better sound placement. Also has far greater speed now resulting in more alt uses, like emulation (Delta) and native games in 40k 60 FPS. Its app catalogue from major players like Netflix, HBO MAX, Prime etc get far more development and polish as well as more users of those. in 2019 to 2021 the Shield won. Its dead and old now. You'd have to be crazy buying this at these prices. Jellyfin and Plex both have solid apps for ATV. And plenty of ways to get a dev cert to sideload IPAs for streaming apps that you're not paying for content for.

Unless you need TrueHD. In which case Shields have an advantage their, but reality is, if your focused on TrueHD you're likely watching 4k 80GB Remuxes, in which case a Zidoo/Dune players are far superior, far better images and sound and faster.

Honestly, no one should be buying a Shield for more than $100 mid 2025

    • -5

Yeah unless you need Android for some APK, Apple TV smokes this.

      • Are you a comedian? The Pro is the best media device out.

Shield Pro > Apple TV all day.

        • +3

@Wizard It depends what a person uses them for. If a person only wants to watch some paid streaming services they subscribe to then a 4K Apple TV gen 3 box is the better choice, because it does provide the customer with better picture quality, and higher bitrate content from some streaming services, for example content from Apple TV+ is almost double the video bitrate for people that use a 4K Apple TV box compared to people that have the Apple TV app on other devices.

I personally have no interest in the features that the Nvidia Shield TV Pro 4K has for supporting MKV file playback which many people use to watch pirated content. No paid streaming service offers lossless audio for movie and TV content. I own thousands of Blu-rays/4K Blu-rays so there is no need for me to pirate anything, complicating the task by wasting my time spending hours in front of a computer downloading stuff before I can watch it, for me it’s as simple as walking over to my shelves and grabbing a movie, and putting it a BD player.

          • +5

            @HuzzahIndeed:

for me it’s as simple as walking over to my shelves and grabbing a movie, and putting it a BD player.

That's actually more effort than most modern piracy solns these days tbh. The days of manually downloading stuff on a computer are long gone.

            • @zfa: It still takes sitting in front of a computer right? The point was I want to sit in front of my computer less, preferably not at all other than for work. It also just goes to show how lazy society has become if walking over to a shelf and putting a disc in a player is too much effort.

You also haven’t taken into account that I said I own thousands of Blu-rays/4K Blu-ray, so if I wanted put those files on other devices I would have to spend hundreds of hours of my time ripping the discs. That’s one thing that’s always boggled my mind, why people that buy discs are prepared to spend so much time ripping them for personal use, just to end uploading the files to the internet so the people that don’t pay can get what they paid for free. I also don’t see the purpose of needing your content everywhere you go, I don’t want to watch movies on a tiny screen when I am doing things outside of my home, or when I go on holiday, the point of going on holiday is to get away from and have a break from what you do in your everyday life.

              • +1

                @HuzzahIndeed:

It still takes sitting in front of a computer right?

                No.

You also haven’t taken into account that I said I own thousands of Blu-rays/4K Blu-ray, so if I wanted put the those files on other devices I would have to spend hundreds hours ripping the discs.

I didn't intend to post a riposte or a rebuke of your workflow. Just pointing out your idea of piracy isn't what people tend to do any more.

                • @zfa: So how do people online pirate and watch the highest quality content available which are large files ripped from Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays 1:1 if they’re not downloading them?

                  • +1

@HuzzahIndeed: Stream them directly from piracy apps. High seas are awash with 80GB bluray remuxes and even our shitty internet can support their playback.
