With the death of emulators in Retail Mode on Xbox, this is now the only option.

MS will not be preventing emulators running in Dev Mode.

However, we understand that many users have dev mode enabled to run legal emulation. We don't seek to remove this ability

  1. Create a new Turkey account (seperate from your main Xbox account). VPN not required for most people. I would use Incognito so there's no cookie issues. Video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yptHFaIafcE
  2. Then follow this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVEbzSVol50&list=PLGTaokZjTu… (keep your regular Retail Mode signed in as your regular account and use your new Turkey account for setting up Dev Mode. Also, obviously ignore all instructions related to Retail).
  3. Alternatively: There's a text guide here. https://discord.com/channels/1007582798598647889/10075849551…
  4. Have fun

Mods, can we please get this marked as long running?

    • +3

Long running? What makes you think they wont increase prices after people overseas start buying this?

  • Dang

    more launch allow-listing

Would be able to continue without internet?

  • +1

    welp

FAQs and user community the past years not thinking Microsoft has / would implement run checks

Is there chance/risk of Microsoft banning my console/gamertag?

No. The worst that could happen is Microsoft blocks the download/pulls the listing of RetroArch/Retrospection from the store for Retail users.

What happens if Microsoft takes down the Retail app from the Store?

The emulator will not be available under your Purchase Library or Recent Downloads list, but you can still use the emulator as normal. Note that if either the console gets formatted or if the install gets "Nuked", it will be gone for good.

Nintendo forced them to. Because (profanity) Nintendo.

      • +2

You should hardly be surprised. If anything it's amazing it lasted this long.

      • -1

        How?

        Nintendo $76,730,000,000
        Microsoft $3,243,000,000,000

        Microsoft is worth ~42 Nintendos.

Makes them a profitable target for legal action, by a company that can afford to persue a multi year case

          • -2

@greatlamp: So they didn't force them to do anything.

            • +2

@deme: Threatening legal action isn't enough? How else does one company compell another to do something?

When you get asked to take a breathalyser test you can choose not to, but you can be imprisoned for up to 2 years. Free choice right?

              • -1

                @greatlamp:

                Threatening legal action isn't enough?

                Is Microsoft doing anything illegal?

How else does one company compell another to do something?

Compel? It can't. It must get a court order where the court is the one compelling it.
                Did that happen here?

When you get asked to take a breathalyser test you can choose not to, but you can be imprisoned for up to 2 years. Free choice right?

Think about this for a second what can courts do that Nintendo can't?

Unless Microsoft is doing something illegal (in which case it's the Law that's forcing Microsoft) then they are just giving in to bullying by Nintendo.

                • +2

@deme: It's only illegal when they are taken to court and lose the case.

You seem to have an issue with the semantics of the word 'force' rather than considering the context of this issue.

What does 'bullying' mean between two corporations? If Nintendo caused Microsoft to do this, and Microsoft would not have made the change otherwise, what is the point you are making when you say they weren't 'forced'.

                  • @greatlamp:

Nintendo caused Microsoft to do this

                    Where is the proof

        • At this point MS should just buy Nintendo.

  • So can't download dolphin anymore without dev mode?

    • +2

Correct. For the price of a coffee you can get dev mode but.

      • -1

I might do that but already have it installed and had stuttering issues running on Xbox series s at 1080p

        • +1

Dude it's no longer working in retail. You need to get dev mode

      • Thanks will fork out the money, but I make my own coffee so it's probably about the price of 5 coffees.

  • Meh. I've got a real Atari 2600 and that's all I ever used it for.

    • I’ve got a real 2600 too 🤷‍♂️

  • I'm not going to bother now.

I'll just stick with Steam Deck for emulation needs. Especially with a TV output option.

Bought a Series S as an secondary for it though, so a bit frustrating.

    • +1

      Sorry. Fixed.

  • It just amazes me, how many people were using it in retail mode, I really don't get it, to save $20?

It was $21 or $22 AUD direct when I got into this, one time fee and that way, there was never any concern, I'm not on the run from Microsoft, I'm just in Dev mode.

    But here we are.

    • I don't have an Xbox Series, but I thought you can't run retail games in dev mode?

      • +2

So basically Dev mode is like a second operating system, sort of. You launch Dev mode and you can do specific things you can't do in Retail mode, there are some things that carry over but it's otherwise separate.
That means, 'an' advantage of Retail mode, aside saving $20, is convenience, as you don't have to switch back and forth. It's honestly not a big deal though.

        • If I remember correctly another negative thing about Dev mode is that if you are not careful one of the shut down options (right next to the normal one) deletes your dev mode saved content = all the emulators. So you have to start all over again. That, plus having to restart everytime you want to use the xbox normally is a bit of deal breaker for me.

          • @Dognosis: This is true, fortunately with enough research there is a script someone has made called 'safely exit Dev mode' which you run as an app to return to Retail mode, otherwise you just have to check a box.

But fair enough, PC emulation is good enough anyway, for me emulating on Xbox is cool, easier and more convenient than a PC on a TV.

    • +3

My only real hangup was how long people said it took to swap between retail and dev, if it was 30 odd seconds I could live but five plus minutes each way was a deal breaker for me. But that was Xbox One, ideally the S/X are faster. Either way, Steam Deck, Wii U w/ GC, BC PS3, and SHIELD TV will have to keep me happy until the next brave soul uploads a retail build.

      • Uploading isn’t the problem. The fact is it can now be disabled even after being installed.

        • I know, I don't care for that one bit, it was a shocker. I finally convinced a mate to get an X (largely for this) the other week and he messaged me in the morning saying it, I thought it might just be a new upload he had, but then I tried mine from like 1.5 years ago and I was killed too. Terrible that they've done it, but let's be real, they've never done a mass kill before. There's always the potential if we reupload again and again like normal that they won't swing the full ban hammer again for some time.

+1 for WiiU (Gamecube, Wii, WiiU native) and CECHB00 PS3 (PS2 and PS3 native) + a MiSTer for perfect PS1 and older.

        • To be fair, my PS3 is an Aussie one, and idk if it has the full EE for HW or just SW emulation. Like Scarface after the tutorial runs unplayably slow, OutRun 2006 doesn't show stuff properly, there's a fair few examples. Wii U is pretty swell, broke it out the other day actually to play Mario Kart 8 (despite having on Switch and Steamdeck) but then was disappointed when I realized you couldn't have separate screens for 2 player w/ the tablet. Shame, even COD let you. Anyway, my PS1 and older getup the last couple years is the FunKey S. The best camera is the one you have on you, and the best PS1 is the one that's on your car's keys and with you at all times. Rest in pepperoni, Xperia Play.

          • @TheDukeOfNukem:

idk if it has the full EE for HW or just SW emulation

Emulated EE, real GS (GPU). Apparently the backwards compatibility kept getting better over time so maybe that game works now.
I mostly imported the CECHB because I like the black trim lol.

FunKey S. The best camera is the one you have on you, and the best PS1 is the one that's on your car's keys and with you at all times

            Looks pretty cool.
            I agree with this 100%
I've got a miyoo mini and I've actually completed a few games on it recently, since it just fits into my pocket easily and saves states instantly, etc.

            • +1

@idonotknowwhy: Thought so. Always thought the launch ones here were 100% ridgy didge, only found out a few years ago that they went from HW to SW in the time it took to release in Australia, big poo. Either way, I mean those games have those issues now. Ironically you could probably inject them yourself with Modman and have better results. Either way, I beat Scarface on XBSX2, and have a literal OutRun arcade machine in the lounge room so I'll live for those two.

Hell yeah dude! I beat all four PS1 Tony Hawks, 100% and all, during my lunch breaks at work a couple years back on the FunKey, great emulation. I've numerous portable emulator machines, the FunKey is just so cool to be on the keychain. Also have an ESP32 Mini (think a GBA original rather than SP) on the moped's keys, but it can only do GB/C, NES, and GG/MS. Still cool though. Both translucent atomic purple, naturally.

  • Is this a life time thing? That is, if i buy a dev license is it perpetual? I already have the retail mode but from reading above, if the hdd or xbox dies i will lose that ability. Assume this dev mode option is valid for any future unit i buy? Or is it only valid for the xbox i own now?

    • It’s on your account, so perpetual.

  • What's the advantage of this over free emulators?

    • +2

you need dev mode to run the free emulators. There was a workaround for non-dev mode, but that was just banned by Microsoft.

      • Thank you

      • -2

        Thanks to Nintendo

  • Ooooh, if only just got all of this happening retail mode. 😢

  • -1

Thanks just created an account super easy and cost me $3.45

Now to buy a cheap usb HDD and start emulation :)

  • These look like they may be the same as the free promo Dev Centre yonks ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/430254

    • +1

Pretty sure I got that deal but when I went to try it out today, it said my Partner Centre account had been deactivated.

  • Can anyone confirm if there’s any complications from using a Turkish account for dev mode?

All the tutorials I read say to use your Microsoft account but it looks like you log in after your in dev mode anyway.

So as long as you remember 2 login details rather than it all being associated with your XB account there would be no issues with this method?

Just don’t want to go to the trouble of setting all this up for MS to geo block my dev account at some stage in the future.
