  • I don’t watch rips of movies I used to use kodi but many jumped away from kodi to to big fines so become more hassle to get most tings working.
I have a Samsung tv and a 820 4 player and a 930d Samsung soundbar package to set up.
As much as I have a ton of 4k and blu ray media i obviously will keep my Netflix and prime to stream.

So i believe to get the best out of my soundbar sound which it offers and streaming the apps of these are not good enough from a tv or are they? And having a dedicated box is better or is it?

I maybe wrong but maybe getting a dedicated box does not make a difference and I swear I read people had an issue in general getting the best out of there soundbars from streaming from the Netflix etc etc.

If the apps on the tv are just fine then money saved but I’m sure I read this box posted on this thread and Apple TV was the go?

The one on here has been out years and sounds to me it’s a bit dated?
Not that it matters but both wife and I both have iPad iPhones which maybe a good thing when it comes to an Apple TV.
But to be honest with my set up I just want the best out of streaming some of the apps i mentioned not only to get best picture but obviously best sounds just like if I was using a 4k or blu ray obviously I know it never be as good as the discs but as close as I can to it and especially the sounds.

  • Friends, I hark from the days of yore when a man would either obtain physical media in the form of a 'Digital Video Disc' (and later Bluray) or build himself a HTPC on which he installed Xbox Media Center and impressed all of his friends with the Netflix-like media library he had at his disposal by virtue (pun intended) of torrenting TV shows and movies.

Fast-forward 15 years and the options for media viewing are numerous and there appears to be devices which can do all sorts of wonderful things and yet at the same time completely fail to handle something simple like some version of HDR playback/passthrough.

Furthermore, I just got a nice big 77" LG C4 and want to make the most of it for both PC gaming AND media playback!

So I wonder… can I get some advice???

I have a gaming PC in the living room (5700x/RTX3080)—it runs Windows 10 (I prefer it to Win 11, but I know this might create issues in HDR). Generally I play some Steam games with the family and also watch YouTube via browser. I have an older Synology NAS too with some media I playback via VLC. Occasionally I'll grab a remux of something because I enjoy the high bitrate viewing and want to get the best of the OLED TV. I still don't know of a better way to obtain these than torrenting… The family is also getting older and would appreciate being able to tap into anything and everything they may want to stream without having to ask me to go and torrent something :-)

I know there must be a better way…

I would be happy enough to just use the one device (PC) + my NAS for all of my gaming/media needs… However, it seems that it's messy and difficult to configure the settings on TV for gaming AND for media (RGB limited vs full issues and other settings on LG OLEDs).

I also keep reading things about Stremio and Jellyfin, but I have never explored them or used them. I probably should!

Where should I look? How can I learn? What are my options? I also have an N100 mini PC hanging around—should I set that up as a media box using some obscure linux distribution that's designed for media playback and streaming? And just use the main PC for games? Or should I buy this Shield? Can a 2019 piece of tech really be the solution? Or do I dare to try some apps in LG's WebOS for media playback (Oh the privacy matters!)?

Surely a 2019 device can't be my best option for media viewing in 2025?

I'll buy this thing if I must, but must I?

    • Keep your gaming PC for games. For media, use your synology NAS with Jellyfin or Plex. The nvidia shield pro is a solid option if you want a dedicated device. This will simplify ease of use on your c4.

      Tldr: shield pro good.

      • Thanks for that.

Could a little N100 mini PC stand in for the Shield Pro as the other dedicated device for Media and as the Jellyfin/Plex client (maybe running a custom linux OS or whatever might be needed if Windows is a problem), or is something like the Shield Pro still needed for all of the Dolby Vision/codec-related things?

        • the N100 will happily stand in for the shield or other dedicated streaming box (and you can move the gaming pc out of the room and stream to it using moonlight). To test it easily and simply download 'libreelec' - they have a USB / SD bootable creator which will set it up on a USB stick for you.
Insert the USB stick into the N100, but you'll need to connect a keyboard as you need to go into the N100 BIOS and set the device to boot from USB.
Save that and then reboot and you should boot up into KODI automatically. Having the keyboard still connected will help if you want to set up network connections to stream from the synology NAS you own (it'll stream using SMB connections, you don't need to run any software on the NAS itself). Kodi can of course collect all the meta data and make nice eye candy info on the media you have on your NAS.

If you want to go further then there is a long way if you're adventurous. I have an N100 mini PC connected to my tv and I use it for media playback, a little streaming (though almost nill to be honest since even for my paid services the online adds just sh!t me), some retro gaming (up to PS2, Wii U, Dreamcast era) and occasionally streaming games from my gaming PC (also an RTX 3080) in another room. The n100 passes audio - TrueHD, DTS:X, Atmos, EVERYTHING) through to my LG Sound bar, though sometimes I manually switch it over to my old 5.1 AVR which is still in place next to the tv - mainly just for music). The n100 DOES NOT SUPPORT DOLBY VISION, it does support HDR10+ - so if DV is important for you, then you'll need to buy a different device. Me? I couldn't tell the difference after doing some extensive testing, so HDR10+ is good enough for me.

All my media is stored on my 'Synology' NAS (It's a PC running the synology software, DSM 7.2 - I pulled my original drives directly out of my old synology DSM 5 system and moved them into the new chassis - the old SHR array was picked up and in those infamous words 'it just worked'), I set up the full ARRS suite to automate downloading (which later I shut them down since I'm picky about what I download and pretty much didn't use them.. the main ARRS app I use is Sonarr - to keep track of tv episodes and rename them correctly), and Jellyfin to handle the metadata collection and handle streaming to external users like my family (they just need to run the Jellyfin app on their tvs, amazon fire tv sticks, google chromecasts, desktops, laptops or vodafone tv media players and they can access / watch all of my stuff on my NAS).

Setting it up was a learning experience for me, but I'm from an I.T. background so it may have been easier for me. I just followed some excellent tutorial articles and videos from youtube.

    • I bought a 83 C4, and was disappointed with the sound output from the TV. Couldn't get truehd to work, from memory the lg can't do it..I am using Sennheiser ambeo max.
After researching I decided to buy this (at over $300 earlier this year) and it's been perfect.

Shield straight to ambeo, then ambeo to tv. Everything works. Primarily used Plex until they became a joke now on jellyfin.

    • Send me a message. This isn't really the forum for getting down into these particular weeds.

  • These had the same processor as the og Nintendo switch, hoping the shield 2 will be released shortly with the Switch 2 processor

  • No way bought this few weeks back for 300 bux 😅

    • +1

Btw combined this with samsung qf for dolby atmos goodness, all up fully functioning home theatrr costing less than arc ultra 😲

  • Thanks! Been waiting for a good deal on this for ages.

We already have one for the main living room TV and have alternated between a Google TV Streamer, Apple TV and Onn 4K on the bedroom and family room TVs.

Having had a chance to give all of them a good run, I've come to the conclusion that nothing quite matches the Shield TV Pro with Projectivity Launcher. So I just got two more to replace the other boxes :)

  • Been waiting years for this to drop to a price I can justify to replace the Fire Stick, which has grown more shit and bloated over time. Onwards and updards!

    • the fire stick is ok if you're only connected to a tv and using the tv speakers (which the vast majority of users would be doing, I feel). It was simple and cheap enough that most of my family and friends have bought them.

Is this useful you want to stream PC games to your TV?

    • Just got it and installed the steam link app. Tried it out and it was great.
Note that there’s a lot of talk online about using NVIDIA games to stream locally - that’s been discontinued and there’s no longer an app. There’s also mention of Geforce Now - a mandatory app that is supposed to allow you to play PC remotely - when I tried to sign up it said it wasn’t supported in the region and you can’t uninstall the app.
I think there are other apps that allow you to stream. You can connect the Xbox controller direct to the shield which is good.

      • +1

You can uninstall these apps via adb, if they are bugging you.

        https://florisse.nl/shield-debloat/

Don't even need a cable - works over wifi.

      • not sure about playing from pc (i dont have nvidia gpu) but tried ge force now and play some games from my steam account, works pretty well (hate the queue tho)

  • Damn, I bought one of these back in 2021 and was hesitant as I was holding out for a successor 😂

Ended up getting one second hand for like 150-180 and it hasn't missed a beat. I'd love to reset it to just speed it up a bit but I'm logged into my old neighbours Netflix account which I'll lose access to. Anyone have any work around? The password has changed but he didn't log existing devices out lol. I'm going on 4+ years of free 4k Netflix atm

  • Am I missing something, but the pro is not available, then only the normal version is selling for $248

  • Nah, not for me, too expensive. Fire TV stick is good enough for me

  • +1

Looks like expired? I don't see any buying option.

  • -1

The only downside is that YouTube does not support HDR.

  • So glad I got one of these to ditch the aging webos apps on the LG TVs. This is so much quicker to load and snappier. Definitely recommend using this over most people's stock smart tv apps.

I paid this much for one second hand.

Crazy how something 6 years old now still holds up so well and they still support it. Had 2 updates in the past couple of months.

    • dude, my LG tv OS is laggy as shit. I was very unimpressed

      • Yea it's bad. Did you get the shield?

        • I got an apple tv a while back. Not much of an apple fan boy but the new tv os looks promising

I currently use my old MacBook connected via HDMI to play from USB on VLC. Would this be much of an upgrade? After reading all the comments, not sure if it’s the right fit.

I don’t mind getting up to change shows/movies lol. If my MacBook ever died I would replace it with a mini PC to do the same thing.

  • So what's a good modern day technology that we can use as an alternative for this?

I use Amazon Firestick Max 4K but can't play my movie files which are >4GB file size. Had issues trying to use a exfat usb/harddrive with the firestick.
I understand it will probably work with the Shield but feels overpriced for dated tech

    • ok you'll need a small NAS or plug the USB into your PC and then run jellyfin on the PC so it can share the larger files to your fire stick max 4k (download the jellyfin app on the firestick and it should 'just work' after you put in the local network address (ie: most likely something like 192.168.1.anothernumber) and sign in using the username you created on the jellyfin server software.

OR supposedly these two apps installed on the fire stick will allow you to access NTFS (PC format which allows files larger than 4GB size) formatted drives so you can then play the larger files. Info / turorial here (not mine):

  • Any Home media experts want to chime in on this:
Currently using my old PS4 Pro solely to stream videos from my plex server/netflix/prime video, is there any point in me replacing it with this?

Have narrowed down the pros of the s shield to:
+AI Upscaling (seems like the biggest benefit for upscaling 1080p content, anyone able to vouch for the quality of this?)
+Doby Vision / Dolby Atmos pro
+Better UI/navigation and support for voice control

    • +1

Upscaling is good, I personally changed it to the AI Enhanced / Low details as default medium was over-sharpening and creating artefacts.. You can also have (a lot of) apps automatically adjust resolution to content so that TV handles upscaling, but that also reduces UI resolution.

Vision works correctly. Atmos I can't check but the feature I wanted is that it can transcode to PCM and cause no audio delay which is nice (my monitor adds some delay to the optical out)

Voice control is kinda borked, it only shows me Youtube results even though I've uninstalled youtube, but asking questions works fine.

It's also quick to wake up.

    • +1

personally I'd trust my TV to upscale 1080p to 4K more than any device, though I am going to give this upscaler a go on my jellyfin streaming server and have it do realtime upscaling / transcoding to anything below 1080p (so a lot of my old DVD rips - blackadder, bottom, DS9, x-files etc.). Jellyfin already transcodes audio to PCM for devices which cannot decode Atmos/TrueHD themselves, or for people using their TV speakers instead of an AVR/soundbar.

  • Is this out of stock? Doesn't look like I can purchase it any more.

    • In stock now

    • +1

Ugoos is $100 more expensive, is only 2021 hardware (so not much newer), CoreELEC is not looking like it will be supported on it much longer, and is much less user friendly than Nvidia TV Shield Pro.

There's a lot of reasons why you'd pick the Nvidia here over the Ugoos. At best, the Ugoos is maybe 5% better but not noticeable to most.

      • -4

am6b+ $255 shipped including tax from aliexpress

nvidia shield $248 @ HN + shipping until it runs out of stock then back to $378. so don't say it's $100 more expensive it's just an outright lie. $7 more expensive for this e-waste firesale is acceptable

coreelec support doesnt matter….it already works fine unlike nvidia shield tv. the worst thing no support is perhaps TMDb scrapers and such won't work in the future. i'd rather have a device that works now then one that never worked to begin with in the sense that it doesn't have proper DV support. that's just me personally as I was using a PS3 as a media player before this. If i buy something new i'd rather get the best product than a stepping stone. what's the point in having a media server again when I can just get streaming tier bitrate and HDR via Netflix which is already installed as an app on like TVs now?

        • +1

You're really biased, not sure why.

Any comparison will at best say that Ugoos is slightly better and at worst that NVidia is better for most people.

So saying it's miles ahead is just flat out wrong. Also having watched the DV comparisons, it's so minor as to be a coin flip which one actually looks better.

          • @DingoBilly: not biased at all just stating facts. better than making up imaginary prices to justify buying shoddy tech. just because it's popular doesn't mean it's good. very good adage

        • enjoy your DRM free box with am6b, so netflix and the likes will be stuck at 720p

          • @bread69: like i said netflix is installed on tvs to begin with….and i only watch remuxes on the box anyway. thats the point (for me) of a home media server. streaming local content—not using other streaming services

    • +2

ugoos? Until today I've never knew about that brand it must be very popular…..

Don't kid yourself. The clear winner is the Shield Pro.

      • +1

I know a genuine sorny when I see one

  • Wonder if there's going to be a Tegra X1 shortage eventually and prices will spike again, with Nintendo still wanting to sell the Switch 1 for a whiles.

  • +1

Comments are actually crazy. All devices have their pros and cons.

Shield and ATV will never play DV P7. Ugoos can.

Shield cons: DV has red shift. 1080p menu. Google doesn't care about Android TV. No HDR10+ for you Samsung TV's. No HDR on YouTube. Nvidia cares more about Switch 2 than Shield. Ads on home screen (can run a different launcher)

You can run Stremio on a Fire TV. No need to spend $$ more.

ATV cons: No TrueHD Atmos but judging by comments that talk about Stremio, I doubt most people care. (Maybe tvOS 26 will unlock passthrough). No Stremio but there are other ways to pirate movies.

Plex will always run like shit on any device.

    • TrueHD pass through is coming in tvOS 26 though on Apple TV.

      • Nice!!! So Atmos should be included in that too I’m assuming?

        • +1

TriedHD is the lossless format of Atmos, so yes.

          • @BillyG687: Awesome, thanks. It's one thing that has been lacking on the ATV with my setup when I would watch truehd atmos content. For E-AC3 atmos content it would be fine and passthrough to my Yamaha A8A (running 11.2.4 setup), but for TrueHD atmos, I would have to switch back to the shield. I know stremio is in the works too for ATV, so that's another step closer to ticking all the boxes with one player. It will just be tivimate that's then missing, which I don't think we'll ever get (There is TiviMax but it's just not as good).

  • I have the P2897 2019 (not tube). I don't use for gaming.

No real benefit getting this if just for streaming, Kodi etc?

Still the GOAT even after all these years.

    New model please daddy Jensen.

  • In terms of watching movies at home these are the best options in terms of quality.

Nvidea shield - best option for high quality Plex. You are probably a pirate 🦜.

Apple tv 4k - Apple has the best streaming box and generally highest quality movie purchases. Older purchases are sometimes upgraded for free ie. 1080p upgraded to 4k

4k Blu ray player. Simplely stick disc into player. Panasonic ub820 is best 4k player. 4k discs give the highest quality and are better than streams/ digital purchases. Highest quality except for…..

kaleidescape highest quality… For the ultra rich! Basically Plex without being a private! I think for entry you are talking 20kish.

  • Available again.

  • i brought this a year or two ago but never got it working

I seem to be missing the part that you plug it into the wall / power socket. It just doesnt fit

    • There was a little cardboard box in mine that had 3 different sets of pins to slide on to the wall wart brick power plug. Euro, Aussie and US pins I think? So just slide the Aussie pins onto the brick, plug into wall.

  • everyone arguing how a mini pc is better than a shield, you're some kind of mediaphile that wants to extract every last ounce or you like to do things the overly complicated way, we get it

but ease of use, the nvidia shield pro is by far the most efficient, best value for money out of the box streaming device on the market and to most people would rival a mini pc in not only cost but also setup/ease of use

if you want to level up your tv functionality, this is the device for you and there is absolutely no debate on that outside of extremists

buy this if it comes back in stock!

  • ahh love it how the jokers always appear near the end of threads.. spouting absolute nonsense. >:D

    • To be fair, the nonsense appeared near the beginning of the thread. More nonsense for your $.
