Does it say how long you have to pay off the termination fees?

          • @rekke: What do you mean? you can cancel the plan at any time during the duration of the contract. Eg the ETC is now 793.50 because the first bill was issued the day after i preordered the phone.

            • @benneb2: When you cancel and have a remaining balance of $828, what time frame do you have to pay that off by?

              • @rekke: I think it gets added on to your next bill or something, not sure

      • +1

Last year the 128GB was $599 after $150 GC for me, but I also paid with prepaid MasterCard to save more.

      • Simply port out.

      • +1

        No. You don't.

      • +1

Not according to my optus account, or the sales rep

    • +1

Haha nice - nothing wrong with doing that as you are entitled to as per the Ts and Cs.

      Which HN was it?

      • +1

        Chadstone VIC

        • +1

Hey can you just confirm that you could indeed and cancel while only paying the $828 termination fee?

I just went to the Chadstone Harvey Norman and the guy there told me that Optus reserves the right to charge me the full amount of the phone if it's obvious that I met a deliberate attempt to "game" the system

Is he just talking out of his ass and I have nothing to worry about?

          • +8

@jgv115: Sounds like a the guy is talking out of his ass to me, maybe trying to save his commission.

Nowhere in the T&Cs could i see that. As above, I can see the termination charges in my Optus app. no mention of the device or anything. Im going to keep the plan active until i pickup the phone, but I dont see any avenue for them to charge the full amount after picking it up.

    • +1

Just to confirm, you can pre-order and cancel the Optus plan on the same day then pick up your phone on release day?

      • +1

Thats what the rep told me, but I think ill keep it active until picking it up for peace of mind

        • +3

          Hmm thanks for the info.

In that case I may just wait until release day to do it once the phone is in my hand.

        • +1

How are you on one hand saying that all the optus app is showing is "remaining balance of $828, with all of that being 'termination fees" which would indicate you have already cancelled. And on the other saying you have not yet cancelled?

          • @Freshozb: Correct - I have not yet cancelled, waiting until I pick up the phone

            • @benneb2: If we cancel when we pick up the phone do they charge the month in advanced?

              • @Daddy Chill: No sure - i think i read somewhere the cost is calculated pro-rata but cant find that in the CIS

                • +4

@benneb2: So I just came back from Hardley Normal. It sent shivers down my spine to actually step foot into their store which took me back to the days of Windows 95. They haven't changed one bit since then. Anyways. The lovely salesman asked if I saw the deal on Ozbargain. He mentioned that the staff laughed at the comments that said cancel straight away. He mentioned that effects your credit score and you should wait at least 2 months before cancelling. He also mentioned that you will get charged the first month regardless if you cancel day dot or when you get the phone. Pretty much you have to 69 Gerry before you get the phone. He mentioned that you will still get the phone if you cancel the contract right away. He said that his friends all got this deal too

                  • +6

@Daddy Chill: @Daddy Chill Incorrect. I did this for the P7 Pro last year and I cancelled in the Hardly Normal carpark over Optus live chat. My charge was only $828.

You will only get charged more if you don't cancel on the first day because then it will be pro-rated for the days of the plan consumed.

I have no knowledge about how it effects your credit score, so I won't comment on that.

                    • -1

@tof: Hey mate, what was your P7 Pro invoice/receipt amount? $828? Wondering if I can claim TRS. Cheers.

                      • @xdigger: I didn't get an invoice. I only got Optus contract paperwork.

I didn't want to ask too many questions haha.

    • +1

so you just pay the extra $100 on the spot to upgrade to 256gb? just checking it doesn't become part of the contract? thanks

      • +1

yup - paid $100 on the spot

    • Hi,
Did you cancel while you're still in HN? Or you called Optus to cancel the plan?
      Thanks!!

      • I canceled when I got home via online chat.

  • So is this deal available in Perth as well?

    • Yes, just did it in Perth, haven't done the whole cancellation thing and got the phone yet though (of course)

  • -1

Hmmmm, why is most people intending to cancel right away? If you cancel after 12 months, would you still be paying $832?

    • +5

      $69 x <months remaining> / 2

      If you cancel straight away $69 x 24 / 2 = $828

      If you cancel after 12 months $69 x 12 / 2 = $414

You pay half the amount if you wait 12 months, but then you'll also be pay $69 x 12 for the 12 months = $828 lol

      • What a weird system. So it would be $1242 for 12 months of use + phone.

I was just about to renew my boost plan as well so I was thinking maybe I can use it instead but I guess it would be better to just cancel on day 1.

  • +2

Did this last year with the Pixel 7 Pro. Was definitely my deal of the year as it was quite amusing/reassuring to see "deals" posted from then on still cost 40% more. Jump on this for sure if you are interested in the Pixel 8 Pro.

    • Did you cancel straightaway or waiting till you receive the phone?

  • My brother declared bankruptcy 4 years ago (discharged 1+ yrs).
His had no other credit or applications since.
Any thoughts on if Optus might reject his application?

    • +2

Gotta go 5yrs before it rolls off your credit file….no one will touch him until then

  • Maximum plan cancellation fee
Does not include additional device payments (if applicable)
    Minimum total cost
Does not include additional device payments (if applicable)

It says they might have additional device payments on the critical summary page https://hndgwww2.blob.core.windows.net/hnau/gift_card_voice_…

How do we know they will not charge something later

    • +4

The phone is supplied by HN, not Optus. I signed up for the deal tonight and the salesperson explained and showed to me that there is no mention of the phone in the contract.

  • Hadn't even considered getting a new phone (the Samsung S21 I got via one of those Samsung deals with multiple stacking code discounts is still going strong), but this may be cheap enough to warrant the upgrade. Anyone else fear that their new phone isn't going to 'wow' them like what used to happen with a new phone back in the day and the cool feeling will wear off in a day or two…?

  • Anyone with Optus Post Plan have loop hole to get this deal?

    • Just get a new number?

      • I like my number :(

        • +8

How does it matter if you're gonna cancel the contract anyway?

      • Can't this phone be on the new number, then cancel it..?

  • +1

Does anyone know (those from last year's deal), the payment options you have when receiving the invoice from Optus? Figuring out budget options. Thx

  • Salary sac the phone or use this deal. Value vs convenience - not sure what to do

    • Use the deal and salary sacrifice the ongoing phone plan…?

      • Can't sack the plan, only devices unfortunately

  • Definitely keeping an eye on this.
Anyone know where's the best place to sell my existing phone if I go through this deal and have a 1 year old Samsung?

    • +1

Check out Mobile Monster. They will give me a maximum of $650 for my P7P.

      • +1

Nice recommendation there. They give better prices compared to JB HiFi's Squarespace Trade-in place.

  • Hey new. New to this so maybe a noob question… So do I sign up for the plan and pay for the phone upfront and they will credit my credit card the full amount after?

    • +2

Nothing to pay other than $69 a month*

      • Unless you opt for the 256 GB version, then you need to pay $100 on the spot or when you receive the phone
      • cool. thanks for the quick response

  • +2

    Funny story.

I couldn't use an existing Optus account because I didn't verify the email and I used a fake birthdate.
Logged into my account and used the link that came out of the Optus breach to get all my recorded personal details out of the account.

    Thanks Optus breach!

Sorry to the scammer/hackers that tries to use my incorrect birthdate on other services :'(

    • +4

Essentially you just proved how easy it is to use the breach data to steal someone's identity…

      • Even more concerning that a birth date is used for verification when you often don't even need a data breach for that to be publicly available.

  • Hey guys, so if I sign up for the plan, then cancel it immediately or almost immediately, I just have to pay $828 cancellation fee? This sounds too good to be true, perhaps there's some other hidden fees?

Also, others have said that they'll do a credit check? I'm not the most financially literate person, so can someone help me out? I am just a uni student with no history of borrowing or owning a credit card. I always just use my debit card and save up decent money in my account. Does that mean I am not be eligible?

    Thanks in advance, appreciate it!

    • I think it's possible that if you have no credit history, you may be knocked back.

      • How do I check my credit history? I googled about a Equifax credit report, does doing that impact my credit score at all? I don't want to make it worse than it already is lol.

        • If you check too many times it effects your credit score

          • @Daddy Chill: As long as it doesn't affect it.

          • @Daddy Chill: I did it just now, it says Equifax credit score is good. You reckon I would be able to get this plan? Again sorry for being a complete financial idiot?

            • @RedOrangutan: You can only try. It's real simple. Drivers license and Medicare is all you need

              • @Daddy Chill: I guess so, will drop by HN soon to find out. I also saw your other post on how the guy said that cancelling immediately will impact your credit score. Do you know how it would? Maybe he has been instructed to say that, so people stay on the plan? Thanks!

                • +2

@RedOrangutan: It doesn’t - your credit score is only hit once when you complete a credit check as part of the application. You will only get further credit drops if Optus reports that you have been (constantly) missing payments

    • -1

Hey, if you are interested in gaining a little bit of low risk credit, do a few laybuys for Christmas that you are already planning to buy.

  • does HN allow to buy 2 phones at the same time if i signup for 2 services?

    • yeah, based on your credit history…no issues

    • I think max is 5 per person

  • Did anyone get the 512 version? Pay additional $300? Just deciding if it’s worth the extra $300 4x the base or $100 for 2x.

    • In my opinion, no 😏

Back in February, I bought two 7 Pro 512s for the wife and myself. We used to replace our Xiaomi Redmi Note phones every two years (when they were still reasonably priced), and always had SD cards for storage… SD cards are no more, so we opted for the larger capacity.

Almost a year later, the wife has not reached 60 GB yet, and I'm sitting at just 125 GB of storage used on my phone… And I've been a data HOG, downloading whatever and never cleaning up.

I'm not getting the 512 again, but I will sell them privately, to pay for the new 256 Pixel 8 Pros from HN 😊

      Just my two cents…

    • So we can sign up today, cancel today and still get the phone on Thursday (release day)?

    • +2

As per my other reply, incorrect. I did this for the P7 Pro last year and I cancelled in the Hardly Normal carpark over Optus live chat. My charge was only $828.

      • +1

Does Optus (live chat) require a reason for cancelling or make it difficult?

        • Bit late but just cancelled mine, was straightforward with no hassles.
          Done in 5 minutes.

If they start offering other services just state that you will like to cancel the plan in accordance with the maximum plan cancellation fee stated on your plan summary in accordance with the australian consumer law rights

    • +5

Zero impact on credit score regardless if you keep the plan for 1 day or 1 year. Other than the initial hit from running the check.

It's an inquiry. Not listed as a revolving account.

    • +2

You must be in the wrong classroom bro

    • +1

Ive seen those words before but never in that sequence.

This comes up in my account.

    Remaining balance $828.00

    View breakdown

    Remaining device repayments $0.00

    Remaining accessory repayments $0.00

    Outstanding charges $0.00

    Termination fees $828.00

    • Is $828 after paying the first month $69 or before.
If after, do you get the $69 prorata back?

    • +2

Did you have to go to live chat to cancel or were you able to do it in your account? Only asking as I'm wondering if I can skip the awkward live chat convo 😅

      • +4

Live chat and tell them you don't need it it was a mistake

      • +3

Last year I had to do it through live chat. I don't think any company will provide a self-service cancellation option. They always need a barrier for retention.

    • When are you getting the phone?

    • +1

did you already cancelled before picking up phone?

      • +1

I didn't cancel I want the phone in my hand. I had a play with the blue one and the screen is amazing and bright compared to the 7 Pro. The salesman said it most probably come early he's going to call me

        • can u check your breakdown again. for me it says 793 after I received a 69 bill due on 20th. So maybe if I don't pay and cancel it will change to 828?

          • @truebunny: Mines same. As I said to get this deal you have to 69'er Gerry

          • @truebunny: Each month, the cancelation fee will reduce by roughly $35.

  • +1

Do you get an invoice with which you can claim your GST back when you go overseas?

    • +1

Last year I got no invoice on the P7 Pro. I only got the Optus contract paperwork.

      • +3

What is the proof of purchase then? For warranty purposes

        • +1

I got an invoice emailed to me, value of $100 total (upgraded to the 256gb)
