Yeah I did it last year if it’s the same it’s easy as.

      • +1

What do you pay the $828 cancellation with? Gift cards? Credit card?

  • Would this work if you are coming from Optus prepaid? or do I need to port out first

  • +1

Do these credit checks actually affect your credit report? Only thing that's holding me back since I love churning cards.

    • +2

yes, Experian approximately -10 points if approved, -15 if not.

      • Seriously? Why?

        • +2

          ask Experian and Illion

  • I used to be with Optus and I had amazing signal at work. I switched to telstra last year because they had the $0 port in deal going on.
But the connectivity is so bad, basically no signal at work for anything at all. I might cancel with Telstra but will have to eat the cancellation fees and take this deal instead.

    • Same Optus better than Telstra

    • Country Victoria, Optus is less effective than shouting. However in Brisbane, i swapped from Optus to Telstra hoping for better coverage in the mountains here.

Not only Telstra worse in the mountains, i get poor reception 30km out from the cbd.

    • +1

You won’t. If you prove to Telstra and open several cases (but genuinely try to work with them to resolve your issue), they will fold and pay out (even back-pay) your contract to your first date of contact. Happened to me, twice

      • This is good info. Thank you for sharing.

      • Thats a very helpful comment, I will try this. But at the moment, I cannot even get my TelstraID created because every time they send me a confirmation link, it never arrives!

  • Does cancelling early affect your credit history?

    • +2

No, the credit check is done at the time of signing up - doesn't have any affect after that if you cancel.

  • +1

is there actually any point in pre-ordering if the promotion runs until the 19th Oct and the phone is "in stock" on the 12th Oct?

    • +4

      potentially stock issues? idk
I think ill wait until people confirm if you can cancel with no extra charge

      • yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. I'm not in a rush to get the phone so as long as the promo is still available then I'll wait

        • Sounds like a plan.

    • +2

      Pull of promotion?

      • +1

you'd have thought that they would have done this after last year when the same deal ran, but it running again gives me hope.

    • I currently have pre-order with Google where they give me $520 Google Store credit, if I cancel that and then try to do this on the 12th and this doesn't work out, then I might miss out on my $520 Google Store credit deal. I'd rather just do this now and check it works before I cancel my Google Store pre-order. I don't think there's any risk of them not giving me the phone on the day because I've cancelled, hey?

      • How did you get $520? Google website says Get A$400 of Google Store Credit with a Pixel 8 Pro or A$250 Google Store Credit with a Pixel 8.

        • +2

2TB Google One plan (cost me $12 extra to do it for a month as I was already on the plan below) you get 10% Google Store credit on purchases.

          • @bleeder: Cheers mate

            • @xdigger: Now you've got me wondering if this deal is worth all the effort, considering I paid $1229 (had $300 credit from last and unidays discount code) and I also get $520 Google Store credit. Might not be worth all the hassle. I would get to keep my $300 store credit from last year though. The $300 only has a month left so would have to buy something and try to sell it, maybe Pixel Buds Pro. This is so confusing…

              • +7

@bleeder: That's how google keeps you coming back, by providing you google store credit with 1 year expiry.

                • @CodeXD: Yep, ended up going with this deal, looks like I'm off the Google teet!

                  • +2

@bleeder: See you in 12 months when you need to use $520 google store credit on Google Pixel 9 🤣

                    • @CodeXD: No, I got the Harvey Norman deal, so only my $300 credit left that expires in a month. Only issue is I don't have an excuse to tell the wife I NEED to upgrade or my credit will expire when the next phone comes out next year.

  • We need someone to actually go take a hit for us all

    • people literally did the same last year

      • +4

I was a virgin last year you can't compare last year to this year

    • +1

I just got back from Harvey Norman and ordered it. This is the real deal. AMA

      • +1

did the staff confirmed everyone's understanding of this deal as correct? did you try asking for the pre-order bonus for direct orders as well?

        • +1

Yes, they did. They talked to me about a Pixel Watch 2 deal and said the phone is also $0 with it, but I wasn't interested so I didn't let them give me the spiel.

        • Just did it also.
The staff know, the salesperson didn't care but the manager was not enthusiastic.

      • +1

What did you have for breakfast?

      • +1

when does the optus plan start, now or when you pick up the phone? are you able to cancel before you pick up the phone too

        • Starts right away when you sign up in the store. Yes, you can cancel before you pick up the phone.

          • @hardcoreshilling: Just to make sure I understand this correctly, if I do it tomorrow and the plan starts tomorrow.
I can then cancel it tomorrow too?

      • what happens to my number when i sign up? if i cancel straight away, is my phone number in limbo for a bit or can i just opt for a new number to avoid it affecting my existing number?

  • Already with Optus post-paid otherwise I'd be all over this, damn.

    • Just make it a new order with a new number.

      • Yeah that seems like the obvious thing to do? Just start it as a new contract with a new number, then forget about it when it's cancelled and move your old sim into the new device… or am I missing something?

  • Does anyone think Harvey Norman will run out of stock if I wait until the weekend to go into a store and sign up to this deal?

    • +4

All that will happen is you won't get your phone day one, you'll have to wait until they have stock.

Which is what I'm hoping will happen, I'll get to see how others go with cancelling and if it isn't going well I'll cancel my preorder lol

      • Thanks, I am happy to wait a bit. My just upgraded to Android 14 Pixel 4a 5G will keep me going until then :-)

        • This is great, that means the 4a 5G will easily last at least another 12 months with all the security updates.

  • Do you sign the contract when you place the pre order? Or when the phone arrives?

Thoughts on the pixel 8 pro compared to s23 ultra?

    • i called one of their stores and the salesperson said the Sim is activated on the day of sign-up.

      • So today if you pre ordered today?

  • Only thing I'm worried about is if I have any issues I have to deal with Harvey Norman rather than RMA to Google, right? With Pixel 6 Pro I purchased directly from JB HiFi, had an issue with the on/off button, they said it was fine, spent hours in the store arguing with them to get them to change it… I guess for half price it's worth the risk though.

    • +2

i believe thats just an option available to you. i bought from jbhifi, just dealt with google directly in the past for issues. they'll make you jump through all the troubleshooting hoops over the phone though but it wasnt much of a hassle

      • Just RMA'd my Pixel 7 Pro last week, very painless process. Now I have a mint condition refurb to sell when I get my 8 Pro 😁

        • +3

Same here. Do it via chat online with Google. Dead easy.

          • @mjae01: What reason did you guys give for the RMA? Do they require you to send your phone to substantiate the issue?

            • +2

@jamie147: They give you two options, they send an advance replacement and put a credit on your payment method (they get you to buy the replacement using a special link). If you don't send your RMA they'll just take the payment for the full price of the device they sent you.

Alternative is you send your device and once they get it, they'll send you the replacement.

I had to RMA when I got my pixel 7 pro last year, as it arrived damaged. I just showed them a photo of it in the Google chat and they went ahead and asked me what method I wanted to use.

    • +1

I had to swap my P7P over in the first few days because it was crashing. JB sorted it out in store within 20 minutes.

      • +1

Depends which staff member you get I guess.

  • I spoke with the sales rep and there was a clause on the max cancellation fee "Does not include additional device payments (if applicable)" which the rep said if I was to cancel early I would have to repay the cost of the full plan $1656, minus what ever I've already paid.

If the device is $0 surely that means that clause doesn't apply?

    • +4

Yes Pixel is a replacement for a gift card you would otherwise get ($500), and you haven't bought a device from Optus.

  • Why does it say in the fine print it ends 19 September 2023?

    • +1

cuz someone forgot to update the date.

  • Is it 1 or 5 Max?

  • Done this with galaxy s21 and pixel 7 pro

Price of cancel for first year drops the monthly charge, then slowly reduces. I had my s21 for 1 year and cost 250 odd to cancel, then jumped to JB hi-fi GC deal with Telstra for $200 profit.

I will repeat the same in a few months again, jump to Telstra.

    • Do you know what would have been the cancelation fee for your s21 had you cancelled right away?

Trying to figure out the rate the fee goes down per month.

  • Is it possible to claim TRS with the invoice after getting the phone? Looking to travel overseas end October.

    • Maybe ask HN to issue a tax invoice for the full amount? Is that possible?

      • Yeah good idea, I might go down to my local this weekend to check. Was hoping for a cheaper deal on the Pixel 8 though, the Pro is too large for me.

        • So would the TRS be based on the full RRP or the cancellation amount? I'm curious as I'm also travelling in October

          • +3

@bleach1221: Based on past experience, unlikely you will get a tax invoice at all.

        • please let me know how you go with it

          • +2

@Voucherd: Just did it right before closest HN closed. The manager said that the invoice will come out as $0 spent on the phone itself meaning there's no TRS possible for it.

    • TRS what - $0? You aren't paying anything for the device.
The only component that you are paying for is the phone plan.

  • I'm currently with AGL mobile on a month 2 month plan.
Does that mean i can still sign up (and retain my number), or because it uses Optus network it wont work? :O

    • +2

just get a new number, then cancel new number? keep the month to month with AGL, just swap the sim to your new (1/2 price) Pixel

    • +1

Update: I was able to do the deal even though I'm with AGL, there was no issue porting to Optus. :) just did it this evening, opted for the 256GB at extra 100 bucks which i paid on the spot cheers

  • Will def keep an eye on this to see if people can only pay the $800 odd to cancel straight away

    • I wonder if you could argue with Optus that, because there are M2M offers that provide better value for money, that the idea of an $800+ cancellation for the plan only (as the device is not tied to Optus) is absurd in 2023.

OR if they would be willing to waive the $800 cancellation for moving to a M2M, and then just cancelling the M2M a week after.

      • You could argue but probably won't get you anywhere.
Ah yes the moving to M2M then cancelling or porting out. Did that a couple times with the old JB $500 gift card plans. Unfortunately a thing of the past now.

        • +3

Yeah, I did a fair share of them.

Side note - as if the idea of robbing Jerry Harvey or Droptus is earning me negs. Y'all OzBargainers ought to be ashamed! :P

    • +18

I signed up at HN tonight and the salesman pointed out that the phone comes from them and not Optus. On the contract, there is no mention of the phone and it definitely states that if I cancel, it will cost $828 right now. The HN sales rep also said "you didn't hear it from me, but you could cancel the contract tomorrow and the phone will only have cost you $828."

      • Thanks for update. Good to hear

      • What is the invoice/receipt amount? $828? Wondering if I can claim TRS.

        • +1

This deal is a free phone with plan. They are not charging you $828 for the phone.

  • If you are a current Gomo Customer (optus's old no frills service) would that be classed as a current Optus customer?

    • Also currently with Gomo. I imagine it would be classed as the same but haven't looked at T&Cs. I guess could always sign up with a new number then cancel plan and pay the cancellation cost. Then keep using Gomo in the new phone.

      • I read online that some people are switching to a prepaid telstra sim, then switching back when changing to Optus. Optus doesn't class them as an Optus account, but also don't make switching from Gomo to Optus easy.

        • OK wasn't aware of that.
Yes switching directly between Optus providers can give headaches.

  • +20

I caved and went an preordered at HN just now. Sales guy was fully aware of the deal (he even mentioned OzBargain 😄) and was surprised they are running it again. Said no issues with cancelling, said i could cancel on the spot if i liked and still pick up the phone. I also paid $100 to upgrade to the 256gb model.

    • +1

If you don't cancel it on the spot, how do you cancel the plan later? Looks like a really good deal at $950 for the 256GB Pro

      • +15

Logged into the my Optus app, and on the service i can see the remaining balance of $828, with all of that being 'termination fees'. Everything else is $0 ('Remaining device repayments, 'remaining accessory repayments' and 'outstanding charges')
