@danyool: No no, fully expected to be with the iPhone from here on out, but this is just too good to pass up. If it was a Samsung or something I wouldn't bother, but I quite like the Pixels.

            • +1

@beyonddd: Ok. Enjoy your savings then!!

            • +1

@beyonddd: Comparing apples to oranges , not the same animal even though we're talking phones 🤔

              • @Murkymerv: buuuuuuutttt… I thoughttttt.. apples & oranges are type of fruits? not animal???

                • @babiguling: Well oranges are a subcategory of fruit, they are a berry, and blackberries, strawberries and raspberries are not berries.

        • Seems a weird backward step. Normally those in the market for an iPhone Pro Max and Pixel 8 don’t cross over. I have the iPhone 15 pro max and I couldn’t see why I would choose to give it up for this phone. I would for a Galaxy Fold if it had a great camera system. But otherwise, no.

    • I also just returned my iPhone 15 pro max for this

  • -1

Is this worthwhile upgrade over pixel 7 pro? Does it address issues such as overheating?

    • +7

from p7p, probs no. most features are available via firmware update.

    • +4

+: better battery life, cooler running, better cam, faster cpu, more modern design, 7 yr sw support.
      -: lower ppi, not curved

      • +19

Not curved is a plus for me as screen protectors are lot easier for flat surfaces

        • as an info: hydrogel screen guards are there for curved. not great like tempered glass but good enough.

        • +5

The reasons I hate curved screens:
          - Screen protector issue as you mentioned.
          - Darker tinge on both curved sides when viewing light colour images/videos.
          - Difficult to register touch on the edges.
          - Prone to screen damage upon slight impact.
          - Screen size appears to be smaller.
I'm not sure what the advantage is and why people like curved screens.

          • +1

@Secret ID: Even harder to touch the edges when it's in a case. Apps with thin vertical scroll bars on the edge of screen can be near impossible to hold down on.

      • +13

        Not curved is a positive.

        • -3

          for you

          • @backupper1: what's your point? if you want a curved screen don't get the phone

    • +5

Remember Android 14 is out today as well. Download that and see how your battery goes - though give it the usual week to "settle".

    • We don't know yet but given those issues are so massive with P6 and they didn't manage to fix on P7, I wouldn't think so
      Definitely wait for reviews
But it seems to be a pretty minor upgrade like the iPhone

  • +1

So, "device must be purchased at the same time the plan is taken out".

Given this is a preorder, does that mean your plan starts the day that you pre-order? Or would it start on the day of release?

And would that pre-order still qualify for the two gift card offers on the 8 Pro ($350 card with the phone, plus a $200 card if you also order a Pixel Watch 2)?

    • gift card?? are you possibly referring to the deal from Jbhifi?

      • +2

        https://www.harveynorman.com.au/google-pixel-8-pro.html

Bonus $350 Harvey Norman Gift Card! + Bonus extra $200 Gift Card when purchased with a Google Watch2* Pre-Order Now!

        • oh did not see that. That is a good question, would also love to know the answer to that question

        • +5

No of course it doesn't stack because you are purchasing those outright. Not on a phone plan.

          • +6

@serpserpserp: Nothing in here is a phone on a plan. The discount applies to an outright purchase of the Pixel 8 Pro.

Customers who sign up to a new Optus $69 SIM only plan in store at Harvey Norman, Domayne or Joyce Mayne during the offer period will also be eligible to purchase a Google Pixel 8 Pro 128GB device with a $1699 discount applied upfront to the cost of the device at point-of-sale.

However, the fine print on this (the Optus plan) deal reads:

This offer is not available with any other offers, unless specified.

So I'm going to guess the answer is "no, but maybe try your luck in store".

  • Does this Optus plan have international calls?

    • +2

      not for this plan.

  • -1

And dont' worry optus won't sell your data off like they did last time with the last breach "pinky swear"

    • They're not alone in this fiasco , there's been plenty of breaches since !

  • -4

look if you people haven't learnt not to go with optus good luck at your own risk.

    • +2

You take out the plan and then cancel immediately and just pay out the discounted phone then you can use whatever sim you want in it.

      • I wasn’t with Optus for over 6 years and my details got leaked. On the plus side, no harm if they leak it twice hahah

        • +1

Seriously. I was saying the same thing. They leaked your data already. As long as you don’t give them new ones you obtained again. You are good to stay.

Going to another provider means you give them all of your new ID again and hope they don’t leak them in future. Better stay with Optus if you haven’t left.

    • +8

Optus AND Hardly Normals, what could go wrong?

  • Anyone know if there is any specific bloatware or Optus branding? Can't see it on the HN page.

    • +2

      Nope.

    • +2

      They never do

    • +1

Pixels never come with bloatware, unless you consider Google apps bloat.

  • What’s the roaming options on this plan? It’s not very clear in the T&C’s.

    • I asked Optus chat yesterday and seems like this plan is only eligible for their $10/day roaming pass.

  • How much is a Pixel 7 Pro worth now? It looks like 128GB mostly around $800 used.

I wonder if I could sell and upgrade.

Last Optus deal, only cost me $750 with the $150 gift card making it $600

I like the 256GB tho, I don't even have a lot on my phone and I easily take up over 100GB.

    • worth like 600 i reckon check mobile monster

    • +3

Guy on page2 confirmed it's only $100 extra to get upgraded to the 256gb model when signing up :)

  • +24

Just in store now doing the order, the upgrade to 256GB is $100

    • That's really cheap

I think I'll go on and repeat.

I can probably sell my Pro 7 256GB for $900 anyways.

Honestly have no idea on the used market tho.

      • -3

@sp3tsnaz Did you manage to get the $350 Gift card offer as well..last year it did work on day 1 of when stock was on hand in store. You have to push for it as the HN sales consultant do make fat $ on each of these phone plan + bundled phone sale

        • What $350 GC? No one mentioned that. It was $150.

          • @[Deactivated]: last year $150 HN GC was included in the deal, not this time, lets see if someone scores $350 GC with this deal.

        • +1

Nope didn't bother, happy with just the phone for that price

      • Where would you sell @Adelv ?

        • +1

Gumtree, or Facebook Marketplace I guess?

All I found on FB is Pixel 7 Pro 128, $800+.

          I assume I would get $900 got 256GB.

    • how are you doing the order using this phone plan deal since it is "pre-order" atm, they'll send you the phone?

      • +1

You pick the phone up the day of release, they just allocate one to you. All that was done today was setting up the Optus $68 Gift Card Voice Plan and then putting into their system that they will take off $1,699 from the phone when I pick it up from Harvey Norman as part of this offer. The 2 parts of the contracts seem to be separate, HN just assisted in setting up the Optus one (plus they get commission for it from what I gather)

        • are you gonna cancel today, or when you pick up the phone?

          • +1

@Mani88: When I pick it up, I don't really care if they bill me for a few days of the first $69 month

            • @sp3tsnaz: ahhh ok, cool! Also what's with the $150 GC? Did you also get a $150 GC when you order?

              • @Mani88: I don't think that's available for the plan ones, I didn't bother pushing for it

    • Can you send us a screenshot please?

      • +2

Screenshot of what? It was done in the store

    • When are you going to receive the phone?

      • When HN gets stock, currently likely to be the 12th

    • which store did you do it at? i called my local store and they said the upgrade from 8 to the 8pro is $800 dollars

      • Upgrade from 128GB as per their offer to 256GB model, they're both pro models…

        • thats why i was so confused, im going to try another store

    • when does this deal end?

wife just dropped her phone (coincidence?) but we are overseas and aren't back till the 16th Oct.

      • +1

        Last line in the description

Offer available in store only until 19th October 2023.

    • It's been a while since I've applied for a phone plan. What info did you need to give HN?
Also, the $100… Did you pay that straight away?

      • I just signed up tonight and yes, they take the $100 straight away. They used my drivers license and Medicare card. They give you the new Optus sim and it also kicks in immediately.

      • Can you confirm how the invoice looks ? Only says $100 or full price for 256gb

        • Invoice states $100 only.

  • +4

Would love something similar for the Pixel 8 and a cheaper plan! Hopefully something else comes up… has anyone asked HN if this is an option?

  • I'm assuming nothing is stopping me putting the Optus sim in my iPad and just using Data - then using my Telstra sim in the Pixel 8 Pro?

    • Doesn't the iPad need a special iPad plan? Not any mobile SIM?

      • You can use any SIM in an iPad because you’re really just using data but you can’t use a tablet SIM in a phone because it they are data only and have no calls/texts allocation.

Edit: well I guess you could use a tablet plan on a phone but it’ll cost you a fortune

    • Assuming both devices are unlocked, neither SIM should care what device its in.

  • +4

Wish they would do something for just the 8, don't need such an expensive plan.

  • I bought like 5 covers for my 7 Pro and screen protector and I assume 8 Pro will require new ones?

    • +2

You could always get the useless exclusive pouch from Google

      • hahaahaha, i am wondering wtf that pouch is

  • +1

I'm currently on an Optus month to month plan. Am i eligible for this deal? My month to month plan is 59/month, so it seems like a great deal to pay an extra 10/month to get a new phone.

    • You would have to either port out to another provider, wait a month and then port back into Optus on this plan, or get a new number. If you do the port out option it would pass the expiry date for the deal unless the extend it

      • Thanks mate, that sucks.

  • Just wanting to confirm, if you cancel straight away the cost will be $828 and you do not have to pay back the device cost as it's essentially "free"?

Is the relevant PDS the one linked below?

    https://hndgwww2.blob.core.windows.net/hnau/gift_card_voice_…

    • No, you have to pay $828.

      • +2

        This is what I meant.

The only cost out of pocket is $828 and nothing else.

I plan to sign up on Sunday and pickup on Thursday so I may have to pay 4 days of the plan as an additional cost.

  • +1

I would rather wait til they have stock, considering the deal will still be running right?

    • Same here. I'm going to wait for stock.

      • Yeah, I might list my Pro 7 256GB now and see if anyone is interested.

It gives me a week or more to suss my options.

  • Something seems off, in the deal it says min cost is $1656 but the current optus contract says min cancellation is $820 or so. I just hope they don't change the optus contract for this offer before the phone comes out and people get stung with the min $1656 cost thinking they can cancel.

    • +4

I would assume that (emphasis mine)

Min plan cost $1656 including device & plan over 24 months.

is counteracted by this section of the critical info summary:

      Cancelling your plan
The maximum cancellation fee is described in the table at the start of this summary and will reduce each month of your contract term. Your cancellation fee will be half of your minimum monthly charge (excluding any applicable device charges) x months remaining in your minimum term. If you cancel your mobile plan, you’ll also have to pay all chargesincurred up to the end of the payment cycle in which the service was cancelled. This is subject to your consumer law rights.

The CIS shows $828 as the maximum cancellation fee for the $69/mo plan.

      • +1

So how are optus getting $1656 as the minimum plan cost? Do they value……..wait I see, if you stay on the plan min cost is $1656. Min cost only calculates cost if staying on plan for 24 months…not the actual min cost if you cancel the plan

        • +5

          Yes.

          $69 * 24 months = $1656 minimum cost over 24 months.

Maximum cancellation fee is $828 subject to the formula (0.5 * minimum monthly charge of $69 * months remaining on plan, plus pro-rata charges for the current month).

  • Will they share invoices for the phone for full price as paid via credit or zero $ in invoice?

    • Nope, its just a "gift" as part of the plan.

    • +2

so no chance of claiming TRS/salary sacrifice on this then?

      • TRS/salary sacrifice what - $0? You aren't paying anything for the device.
The only component that you are paying for is the phone plan, so maybe you can explore options for TRS/salary sacrifice on that.

  • +2

FYI they will do a credit check on your file.

    • +4

Lol lucky for me mine was high enough that he's like… You could get 2 more of these if you want :p

  • +1

This sounds too good to be true. So you can sign up to this plan and cancel once you get the phone, and only need to pay $828 for cancellation fees? I literally was picking up my iPhone 15 pro that I preordered this morning but if I can save $1000 getting this I'd much rather!
