1 Day Per Week Roles - Work from Home

Hi all,

I'm trying to find a job that's one day per week - ideally WFH and on a Wednesday just so I have something to do in my spare time.
I'm currently blessed as one of the 10 people in Australia with a part time IT career but just want something to add into the mix.

I currently have a second job within the APS that I'm absolutely not interested in, $40/Hr, can work when I want, I just dislike the work environment - if it was WFH I'd opt in for shifts.

The job could literally be anything from home, minimum wage, call centre work, data entire, I'm genuinely not fussed, I thought working a few days a week would be enough to not be bored but alas, all my friends work full time and I'm not interested in making new friends and video games tend to get boring for me without friends to talk profanity with.
The filtering on Seek is a 5/10 and even under the 'Work from Home' location and part time/casual filters show full time jobs that are in office and maybe the occasional WFH day.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to filter things to suit my requirements a little better? or is it just a case of me spending on of my many days not working looking for a job?

      $50 each foot for a photo doing almost anything of your choice.
      $100 for a video.

      But I think that wouldn't occupy enough for what I'm after, essentially I just want to fill time with something and if I can get a bit of cash I won't complain.

        I'm not sure if there is any "WFH" gig work that lets you work infrequently, as little as 1 day a week. Possible ones might be:

        • online tutoring
        • transcription
        • translating
        • data entry
        • freelance writing (but ChatGPT is taking all the jobs right now)
        • tech support
        • web developer or software developer, UserTesting

        and if you have the time you could probably set up your own eBay store / shopify / amazon store. Obviously not 1 day a week but you are your own boss and how hard you work directly correlates with how much you can make.

    Reaching out to a staffing agency might be a good idea, Randstad, Hays or Adecco or the like. Let them do the searching for you.

    1 day a week is pretty rare though and it's unlikely to be a Wednesday and WFH. People who work 4 days a week tend to do Mon-Thur and at most companies they don't think about job sharing for that little amount. Reality is that training someone, providing them with the equipment they need and such to get 40 days of work a year out of them is more hassle than it's worth.

    Have you looked around for work on Airtasker, virtual assistances and the like? 1 day a week seems more suitable to gig economy stuff.

    You should be able to get a call centre job, they are crying out for staff on the whole and they have a lot of people who work only 1 to 2 shifts a week (students for example). Some do want you to come into a central location but plenty are WFH these days (although you will need to attend training, which might be on site).

      Nah, I want to do something different elsewhere.
      Not enough work or funding where I am, I work for a small non profit that does amazing work in a niche sector that doesn't get enough recognition

      I log into the website and select what days I want to work in the coming weeks and get given shifts on those days

            @ToyotaCrownHybrid: How stressful is the job like do you find yourself pretty stressed out at the end of the day is it demanding. I'm assuming you have to come into office and clock in and out.

              @AlienC: No stress, pretty chill.
              The work is mundane and fairly repetitive - the whole workplace is run on KPI's and while there's flexibility in work days/hours it's super strict, can't talk to colleagues unless on a break, can't check my phone unless on a break, can't take a dump longer than 5 minutes regularly unless it's during my lunchbreak without getting in trouble. Clock in, Clock out, Clock everywhere.
              It's a good job and pays well considering the lack of skills needed but it's soul draining haha. Lots of people love it though.

                Please be advised that due to lack of consistency that occurs with bowel movements, user may require up to 15 minutes to poop and complete the recommended sanitary actions before returning to their work.

    Yeah, I hate that feature on Seek. WFH should mean 100% WFH and then they should have a Hybrid filter.

    It's not from home, but what about being a rideshare driver (or food delivery if you don't want to talk to people)?

    You'll have complete control over your working hours and it's a good way to pass the time chatting with strangers or listening to music/podcasts, even if the pay is rubbish.

      It might be worth picking up again.
      I was getting around $32/h post tax and expenses doing Uber Eats a year ago and the 3 prior to that but I've just moved to an area where there is a lack of Uber Eats stuff so meh

    You are not going to find anything to be honest.

    It takes time and money to train an employee, and one or two days a week is just screaming that you are not committed. This is why you will find most employers require a part time commitment of at least 15-25 hours a week, unless they are filling a "charity case", "diversity hire" position whereby they will hire from a DSP provider.

    Job advertisement websites are pretty useless when it comes to finding proper jobs because their interface is bare-bones and provide only just enough usability to convince an employer to pay up and join the platform (That is their revenue!). In the past I wrote some code that filtered out employers on Seek early 2012 to discard all advertisements from recruiters because those jobs are mostly fake. There is a template I threw out on Whirlpool some time ago under my old alias, but I am not sure which page it is on at the moment. The job advertisement sites have also changed, so may be more aggressive against webcrawlers, but nevertheless I would have expected people with an IT background to be able to do exactly what you described you are having problems with…

    It is also better to apply for the underlying job rather than go through a recruiter. Furthermore, if you know anything about statistical methodology, you will know a big portion of those job advertisements are just sampling for the pseudo unemployment rate. You will not get a response from applying to those jobs, plain and simple.

    There is also another dirty secret I learned about the recruiters whilst I was working at a law firm and why you should filter them out from your job search. You will find there are requirements for bringing in foreign labour, and there is always some back handed outright fraud by the recruitment companies that takes place to ensure that a person can get a visa. e.g. Bringing in under-skilled IT people when we clearly have the talent in Australia. The thing is because of my multi-discipline background, I see through all the bullshit; but it's the reality of what happens in Australia. How we got here, I don't know.

    Anyway…
    What exactly are your skills in IT? Have you thought about how you could use those?

    What exactly do you want to do with this extra 1 day a week job? It is rare that an employer is going to be asking for that. Sometimes I just hire a random person to fill a position on a pen-test team at a competition since we are small, but this won't be work from home, and it is usually only 2-3 days.
