The Good Guys Strikes Again - Item out of Stock, 3 Month + Wait

I ordered a Haier fridge from TGG back in Nov 2023 when QLD still had the appliance rebate for energy efficient appliances (4 star). Promptly paid for the order as delivery date ETA was about a week away.

Fast forward to now Jan 2024, QLD appliance rebate has now closed and TGG sales rep cannot give me an ETA on stock. Delivery date on website just keeps pushing back by 2 weeks. Apparently stock shows up as -6 on their system at the local TGG warehouse. Probably means there are 6 other people like me waiting. There is a cashback offer from the manufacturer which will end 31 Jan 24. TGG sales person says they have contacted the Haier sales representative and they don't even know when the next batch of these fridges will arrive in Australia. Could be a 6-8 month wait, but there are none coming to the Brisbane warehouse for the forseeable future.

I had paid for the fridge with two TGG gift cards, as I could purchase TGG gift cards at a discounted rate from my employer. What are the chances I can get it refunded as cash or onto a credit card so I can buy the fridge from a competitor who actually has one in stock? The TGG price was good ($400+ off their list price) but with no ETA it's not looking promising that I'll even receive the fridge. I have a suspicion there's a chance it could suddenly be in stock again after their cashback ends at the end of January.

What would you do?
Keep waiting?
Try and push for refund to a credit card or cash, as the wait time is unreasonable (ACCC just says "reasonable timeframe" https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/buying-products-and-servic…)?

Buckley's. This is why you don't buy discounted gift cards on an item that has to be ordered in.

The website showed the item as in stock and ready for delivery 5 working days away. When I called the sales rep they said the warehouse has zero, but a batch of 12 fridges had been delivered to the Berrinba warehouse in Brisbane waiting to be scanned in. That was in Nov 23.

I guess they lied to get a sale especially with the customer having zero chance of verifying if that's true or not! The website ALWAYS shows as in stock to accept orders but the delivery date will keep pushing out. It's actually pretty sneaky!

  • No chance to receive credit card/cash, you will receive gift card(s) same value. Another 5-7 days to process on your end.

Zero. They will only refund back to the original payment method.

They'll happily refund you, just not all of it back to cash or a credit card as you want but instead to the original payment methods. So you'll get giftcards and however you paid the balance refunded to you.

  • I bought an LG fridge in mid October 2023 and took 8 weeks to arrive. Short supply of stock with all this just in time inventory management nowadays

Like every retailer, TGG suffered supply chain problems. I had to wait for my rangehood for over three months plus. While it is annoying and frustrating, I understand it is difficult for the staff of TGG as well. TGG staff are awesome, and they always try to help.

Patience is the key. It will come I suggest you wait.
