Battery Mower: Ryobi vs Greenworks

Good day all! Just wanted to hear reviews and opinions:

Been on the lookout for a battery mower for our 100sqm SWB lawn. We've initially looked at this Ryobi 36v model at bunnings:
https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-36v-hp-46cm-6-0ah-brushles…

But found this Greenworks model today at total tools:
https://www.totaltools.com.au/redemption-bonus-offers/176676…

Not sure if I understand it right, but it seems you even get a line trimmer for free.

I've heard Greenworks and EGO are way better than the Ryobi ones, is this true? Should I bite the bullet?

Thanks!

  • I went EGO for my setup five years ago. At that time Greenworks was only available in USA. If I was doing it now I'd be seriously looking at Greenworks, they had a good rep back then in USA and were supposedly comparable to EGO, and significantly cheaper.

    • I was on the fence between EGO and Greenworks a year ago. Greenworks was not cheaper at the time, and EGO did a good deal with a heap of free batteries etc. So went with them. Happy with the choice.

But either are a good choice.

      • Yeah so since greenworks wasn't available here when I was choosing, I was comparing USA pricing for both. Greenworks was cheaper than EGO in USA then, but from all the reviews it seemed both were comparable performance wise.

        • Agreed, either would do an amazing job! :)

But since I purchased the EGO gear the Greenworks range has exploded locally with lots of garden add ons like ride on mowers and even buggies and lawn vehicles. If I had a need for some of this, I would be looking at Greenworks.

      EGO

Is it not a dirty word?

It’s only 100m2. You don’t need anything that expensive. An 18v model will do the job OK.

I have a 36v brushless Ryobi and a 5ah battery does 355m2 (measured) on one battery. If the lawn is extra long because I’ve been slack, the one battery won’t do the lot, but it goes close.

    • I do have an older model 36v Ozito (2x18v), and unfortunately it keeps stalling even though my grass isn't that long and the blades aren't blunt.
The lowest I can go at the moment was 45-55mm, then it starts stalling. If my grass does go long, I don't go low on the first run so I decrease the height bit by bit, which does take a lot of time.
You're right though this might be overkill, but for the sake of knowing if the Greenworks vs the Ryobi is worth it, what would your view on it be?

      • Hate my Ozito for the same reason. It keeps stalling. Making a 15 min job to one hour. Looking for a replacement too. Let me know which one you decide to buy OP. thanks

        • Hm, was actually planning to buy one. Is there a specific model to avoid?

          • @briand: thanks for the update mate

          • @briand: I also bought this.. Thanks!!
I was also looking for ryobi but then saw your post and went ahead with greenworks..!!

            • @NikhilTri: Can you pls share your review as well?

            • @NikhilTri: I was using my friend's Ryobi 18v before this and its night and day.. this has a steel deck, much heavier. Wider as well so lesser to-and-fro.
Battery lasts a good fair bit and the maybe cos of the weight of mower, the grass is evenly cut.

The battery is big and heavy and you realise that when you use it in the snipper.

              Happy with the purchase.

The website is pretty shit though. Have registered the product but have got no confirmation. Also the manuals are not properly uploaded on website. Sometimes they are not there at all and for some, it's incomplete.. missing photo page.

              Hope this helps!!

      • Are you mowing when the grass is COMPLETELY dry or still dewy? As alas a lot of those underpowered mowers struggle to generate enough thrust to discharge clippings, thus when it's even slightly damp the clippings tend to clog up underneath, eventually choking the mower.

This is the main way they stall, otherwise it's not hard for anyone with just a tad of mowing experience to listen to the mower as you're using it and go slower in thick sections - and ensure you're cutting at a height it can handle - though to be fair most Aussies have an obsession with scalping their lawn, thinking this will make it needing less mowing.

And I say this having extensive use of an Ozito 2x18v mower doing my elderly mother's lawn in a tropical setting.

For 100m2 you do not need much at all - I think those mowers you're referencing are overkill - if you MUST why not upgrade the Ozito to the 2x18v steel deck, which has a LOT more power than their others - that way you can use the same batts etc - though you'd buy as a kit so get an extra set. Much cheaper as well.

Looks correct, buy te mower kit, get a trimmer and battery.

Both decent, I went EGO. Good mower, but they are 'large'. Which can be a problem for tight garden spaces.

I had an Ozito 36v for my small lawn and recently upgraded it to the katana tools one. It's much much better. Automatically ramps up when it senses thicker grass. Heavier duty build and got it 50% during black Friday sales.

    Consider warranty as well:
Greenworks - 4 year skin and 2 year battery warranty.
Ryobi - 6 year skin and 3 year battery warranty.

    • Good point! Thanks

The Ryobi will do a good job on your lawn. Check out the video, although he's using 2 X 4Ah batteries not the single 6Ah in the kit at Bunnings. Doubt it makes that much difference.

  • That’s a great deal with Greenworks and if you don’t have any Ryobi gear yet, I would get the greenworks

  • +2

Go whatever has the best and easiest warranty return. Bunnings will easily just swap stuffed Ryobi gear for new or refund, no idea about Total Tools & Greenworks.

  • I wouldnt pay $100 more for Ryobi. Greenworks is pretty good.

  • 100m2? Honestly a cheapo 18v Ozito would manage that just fine.

I don't think there's much between the two you linked - the Greenworks is a better offer due to the bonus, but Ryobi might offer more diversity into other skins etc. Both will more than meet your needs.

  • i bought ryobi 18v 37cm mower - very good. Had overgrown grass that wasnt cut for a month., Did it in a breeze
