[QLD] Watermelon $0.08/kg, Sweet Honey Gold Mangoes $0.98 Each @ Coco's Annerley

320

Noticed this deal for this Northside store was quite popular and had a look around at some options for my Southside homies and noticied Cocos Annerley is advertising same price for mangoes and watermelon. Unfortunately this area is generally pretty hectic at peak hour, so I suggest calling ahead to gauge how much is there left and try to go during off-peak times (its open 24.7)

As usual with fresh fruit, YMMV.

I will also try to duck into Yuens and Bellas this week as they will probably be running something very similar or if not, identical.

Really makes you think how much the big chains be gouging.

$0.08 is too expensive, I am going to wait till it drops to maybe $0.05 then I can afford to buy 2KGs.

    • +1

i can't believe i paid ~38c a kilo the other day like there isnt currently a cost of living crisis.

      • +2

Exactly, the money saved could have been invested in the kids future, like more water melon.
I want to make sure I have enough to retire, water melon for everyone, and you get some WM, and you and you and you.

Hey OP, only when people boycott big chains, they will stop price gouging.

There was a survey recently that was posted by @Embaloo Coles & Woolies Boycott, it was funny to see that around 286+ people voted for “I have other local options but C&W are cheaper”

If so is the case, big chains will never reduce their prices as they know there are people who will shop with them.

This place you mentioned are selling Honey Gold Mango for $0.98 whilst Woolies are selling for $3.50 each Go figure!

Pity here in VIC even the farmers markets are getting greedy recently.

Farmers Markets have always been a money grab (IMHO) !
I used to have a stall next to a guy who sold Organic Apples ! His daughter told me once that they were actually the ones that had fallen off the trees, or were less than perfect, and they couldn't sell to the Wholesalers.
Im sure not everyone does this, but there are a few who do…

As a kid, I worked at Queen Vic Market(5am shift) for pocket money and I know exactly what your are talking about.

nah i believe it , there is a southside farmers market in brisbane that people go absolutely nuts for - but the produce is DEFINITELY B grade for about 95% of the offerings still left after 7am. The free range eggs are ok value if you buy up in bulk…

        • There are only 2 paths that produce take from the farm to your plate for 99% of produce.

          • farm > supermarket > consumer
          • farm > wholesale market > independent grocer or "farmers market" > consumer

ALDI has the freshest, followed by Coles/Woolies, then independent grocers, then lastly the stalls at farmer's markets selling all types of produce.

Unless a stall at a weekend farmer's market is selling 2 tonnes of carrots (or whatever single in season product they've grown), you're actually buying the Friday wholesale markets left overs that no-one else wanted to buy during the week, and it's about to be tossed. It's good that it's not being wasted, but people who shop primarily at the weekend markets because they believe that they're buying the freshest possible produce, direct from the grower are really naive.

Not sure if some watermelon is going to allow you to attend without participating in the battle royale, but I’m still a neophyte until I pass the next test, it will be up to the elders to decide.

    Like how? I thought 0.99/kg is cheap…

    • Dat feel when the ordering intern reads ‘5 tubs’ as ‘5 tonne’

While most people love to bash Coles and Woolies as they are the easy target, have people actually thought about their running costs to cover air con, expensive shopping centre rent, refrigeration, wastage, theft, free trolley use and absorb credit card surcharge etc ? I don't shop at the big 2 often as I can't afford their prices these days and only buy things on specials. I mainly get my meat from Asian butchers and fruit and veg from local green grocers. I don't understand why people have to just blame these 2 while there are others who do the same. Example the IGA here in Brisbane and their fruit & veg prices are even more expensive than these two and no one mentioned once about them !!! There are options available people if you don't like certain retailers !!!

Won't somebody please think of the conglomerates

is it any good? last week they were flogging it at $0.48c/kg. in my experience, usually when they flog cheap produce, something is wrong with it, not ripe, tiny, etc

    • +1

      dunno but price is right
how bad could it really be - we are definitely well into the season for it now so i would assume they are half decent..worst case you lose like 50c?

I am relatively sure this cocos is the same cocos mob that used to be at market square sunnybank back in the 90's - so they should be selling some half decent product.

      • +1

i'm guessing over-ripe at this price, basically mush. if you press on them and they feel spongey, don't buy them

In Melbourne, when I go south, I usually head to Bushy Park to checkout the big melons.

    • ….around the the Bushy Park Wetlands?

    • I..I am still not sure if this is a boob joke or not as when I googled bushy park melons the first thing was a fruit shop with a business name called big watermelon bushy park (trading as BIG WATERMELON ) that had watermelons on special at wantirna.. which isn’t technically south (or is it?)I think (my only knowledge of Melbourne is really within the cbd free tram network lol)

Calamvale discount fruit is where it's at

i noticed rochedale market also offering 8c /kg now too, and 10c for whole mini watermelons as per someones comment in the original thread.

apparently this years crop has been substandard - not surprised with the weather all over the shop i guess.

I just went to deagon fruit barn and they were giving away watermelons.

They were out of $1 samosas.

    • Used to hit that place up all the time. Now I avoid any outside fruit and veggie shop. Must be inside a centre

  • Watermelons are also $0.08 per kilo at T-Bones in Aspley. They're nice melons and they have many pellets of them available.

    • That’s what I referenced in my OP, literally the first sentence is a link.

Ok I know this is no where near the deal posted, but for those further east SPAR at Carina has whole seedless watermelons going at $0.68/kg. It's top quality!

They are about 6-7kg each so not humongous. Taking fuel and time into consideration, it's worthwhile to pay a bit more if I am only there to get a watermelon.

    • We got a 10c one from Rochedale and ours was seedless. I don't eat a lot of watermelon but it tasted OK.

  • watermelon is ok, not great. it is red but a bit crispy
