Let him cook. Most people get the pro for the camera too. It kind of serves as a cheaper all in one is another way to look at it.

    • Oh I dunno - depends what you want to get out of it. Consuming Reddit and Tik Tok? Yeah…seems a waste. If you're producing content with it…maybe not.

For me personally it depends how good the camera is. Obviously I use a phone for more than that, but aside from the camera my use is not demanding. The camera is what would prompt me to pony up a bit more for a phone. Since I'll always have a phone on me, and I'm into photography, my phone can be fairly important bit of gear to me.

If a phone could deliver similar quality images as my DSLR does, then $2k would be a bargain! $3k would be a bargain too! Of course, in reality this won't beat any of my dedicated cameras for image quality…but it is quite a lot cheaper than most full frame bodies and a fast ultra-wide zoom, and I don't need a backpack to hold it. How much value would I get out of the camera in this phone? I'm not sure on that…I would need to experience it, and I suspect I wouldn't be happy enough with it to make prints out of the images.

My last phone is an iPhone 12 mini…and it was $767 or something. I'm fairly sure the 15 Pro cameras will outperform my 12 mini, but I'm not sure by what margin and if that's worth the price difference. I can't afford it anyway.

I don't think everybody will be buying it for consumption of Reddit and TikTok though…that would be a little silly, unless you're just into it for the status of owning a flagship phone.

      • +2

People def buy them for the consumption of tiktok lol.

        • +3

And sexting. You need the best camera to make your bits look good

          • @illusion99: Need that 3d camera depth technology nobody uses.

    • +1

I think there’s something to being shamed for not having an iPhone ,
green message vs blue message ,
or photos not loading to messages on android phones .

      • +3

Yep, the power of Apple marketing.

        • +3

If only Samsung was better at marketing. Could have like a Smessage with blue messages. Actually wasn't there something like that with Samsung but without a name?

        • +3

          power of Apple marketing.

Yes, It couldn't possibly be because of things like:

          • Ecosystem interoperability and integration working seamlessly together, unrivalled in Android
          • iCloud services that sync between all devices in iOS
          • Intuitive and user-friendly interface that is very consistent across devices, ensuring easy familiarity
          • Prioritised optimisation from App Developers – usually find higher quality apps in iOS that are better optimised
          • Apps usually launch on iOS before Android
TIMELY SOFTWARE UPDATES. Crikey, you get software updates day 0. No waiting around for your carrier, no months later releases.
          • Supported devices list grows in length, apparently with each iteration of iOS
          • iOS is generally regarded as a pretty secure OS, sometimes that’s down to opinion but I certainly agree with that statement.
          • Strong emphasis on security, privacy, app tracking transparency
          • Consistent design language across iPhone models makes it easy to support
          • Customer support is absolutely unrivalled.
          • Resale value is maintained for far longer than equivalent devices from other manufacturers.
          • Unified hardware, as Apple controls the hw/sw
          • iMessage and FaceTime are game changers. Especially for supporting older users: I can facetime my old man and get him to share his phone screen if he needs help figuring out how to do something

That’s just off the top of my head.

That's a few of the reasons people keep coming back to Apple devices. Why it enrages you non-Apple users is beyond me - stick to whatever you like, just please shut up about other people's purchasing decisions.

      • +2

Using the messaging app the phone came with is such an apple user thing to do.

        • +1

What using something Pre setup that just works? The real question is why pfaff around working out which of the other options people are going to land on?

      • Have you been shamed?

    • -5

I was gifted an iPhone for my birthday and felt incredibly guilty about it because of how much it cost.

It's now been a week and I totally understand the hype. I couldn't imagine going back to Android. The fact that I can take incredible pictures now, is just amazing compared to my shitty $400 android phone.

Not to mention the usability is above and beyond compared to my Redmi.

      • +6

        Great logical comparison!
Clearly Android was the reason of your problems/shitty phone experience.

        • I feel guilty that my Galaxy 10+ had 2x the functionality of iPhone for <1/2 price & 10x less radiation of iPhones. iphone 12 was banned in France for excessive radiation :(
I upgraded to S24 Ultra only for the 8K video for future proofing of best quality memories & 200M excellent camera with 10x optical zoom (& irreplaceable S-pen)

    • +1

That's like most (if not all) of the people who jumped on the M1 Max deal @ mwave. I don't think any of them need a $4000 laptop to browse the web.

  • +2

how does this work.. "10% gf (TCN Teen) card promo in Woolies" -> is it simple going to Woolworth buying 17100 + 150 card. and you pay 1575?

    • Yes exactly that. But some woolies may not allow you to buy so many at one time so you may need to split transactions over different days and/or woolies

      • Do they let you buy TCN cards with cash?

Can I convert the damn $100 JB cards into $500? I'm so over $100 denominations.

        • Yes Woolies allows you to buy with cash as long as you don't use the 'card only' registers

No you cannot combine them into one card as far as I know

          • @illusion99: Painful as hell, if I go to buy a $7000 OLED and pull out ….. how many $100 cards……? :/

(well, 1x spreadsheet with lots and LOTS of numbers on it)

        • Do they even have $100 teen cards? from the TCN website…."Can I buy gift cards in denominations other than $30 or $50?
Not at this stage, however you can of course buy multiple cards to create whatever value gift you want to give"

    • TRS too

  • I keep missing damned gift card promotions, I had no idea there was a TCN Teen deal and that deal worked at JB. Thanks Op.

    $1800 FOR A 128GB PHONE ?! IS THIS 2015 ?

  • -8

Apple is too expensive. Got the iphone 11 max in 2019 for $1850 and was horrified they had jacked the price up.

Needed a new phone past christmas and tried my best to convert to samsung - it's cheaper, better deals, free stuff with it and discount vouchers plus you can install pretty much whatever you want on it.

It's just too damn ugly though. Really really tried. If you care about the things you purchase then looks matter. If your the type on ozbargain who likes the cheapest on sale shoes that look like kmart then it doesn't matter.

Samsung is a billion dollar company and can't pay a decent designer.

Resorted to paying $2200 for the latest iphone 15 pro max which pretty much looks and is exactly the same as my old iphone 11 pro max

    • +5

That's why they jacked the price up. You still ended up giving Apple money in the end

    • +3

Whether it is ugly is subjective. Like the notch on your iphone.

    • S24 looks almost identical to iPhone 14/15 lol

      • Just the power of Apple marketing making people think their phones are the most premium products! I don't even understand why they retain a better resell value as an old model.

Now that other manufacturers are promising even longer updates.

        • +1

Because they are simply better, as simple as that & by the way I also own an S23 ultra as a secondary phone just in case.

          • @MrPresident: As in iphone 15 pro max is better? In what ways for you? I use both android and ios phones. No doubt iphone flagship is good, just that I don't know if they are worth $800-$1000 more than S ultra or pixel 8 pro that's all.

If money wasn't an issue then yeah sure they are great.

            • +1

@JL1: I think you made a good point about money not being/being an issue for many of us. I use a Mac, iPad, apple watch, AirPod, and appleTV, so regardless of the features of an Android, it's useless. I was an Android/Windows user until 2020. I only like Windows/android for their simple file management, for everything else, it's Apple. Apple has its issues but much better product experience/integration compared to others. I use an iPhone 12 Pro Max & haven't found a good reason to upgrade, maybe an iPhone 17in the future. I prefer the video/photo quality of 12 pro max compared to S23 Ultra. I may buy Vision Pro next year ( I am not an early adopter).

        • So you think you know better than the people who use Apple products every day and that it is all just about marketing? Spare me. You don’t think your failure to understand might just be your bias and lack of experience? Believe me we are more than happy for you to continue using Android products. What we wonder is why you feel the need to dismiss the experience of Apple users?

Often the iPhone is just part of the ecosystem that includes the watch and iPad. Again if you want to use your Android tablets and watches then go right ahead.

The times I have tried Android products I just keep going “why do things like this when there is a simpler integrated way to do it?”. At the end of the day it is the user experience that is important. All the fancy specs are a means to an end.

          • @try2bhelpful: I mentioned more than once I use both. I use android and ios everyday. I even use a macbook. I am simply asking @MrPresident why he said it is strictly better.

I've owned an iphone since iphone 4 and haven't stopped owning one since then so thanks for assuming I have no experience. I am not dismissing the experience, I asked them in what ways according to them since I am interested in having a civil discussion but here you are guns blazing. I think both systems have their pros and cons and that is from my experience.

And yes I understand whichever ecosystem you are in will obviously work better together.

And that's fine and I respect that you find ios more integrated as a system and I will probably agree with you there. Things just work together well. And thanks for sharing your reasons of why you prefer ios. Hope you won't keep attacking me for my opinion.

Ps. I dislike the fact that their marketing is so good that many people refuse to try anything else ever. You have used both so I respect your experience.

    • +3

You’re correct. Samsung phones offer terrible user experience. They feel like they run multiple OSs at the same time, and nothing works easily.

It sounds weird, but I want to be able to ‘trust’ my phone. Can’t do that with Samsung.

      • I think that is subjective too. Some people like android, some like ios. I use both daily.

There is always Nova launcher for something different if you do not like the default OS?

      • Motorola $200 phone is good for a year or two or three of security updates .
Not been hacked yet , but in saying that ..
Use my mini 6 for most things and and just for the user experience .

  • -2

Can't even imagine putting down anyhting over 1k on a phone. May be I'm sceptical or may be I'm just too wise to use a phone as just a phone and nothing more.

    • +7

Weird you comment that here but said make sense $1200 on the Samsung

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14854833/redir

      • I have a phone to trade in so effectively it should fall under 1k, if it doesn't, may be I won't buy.

      • -1

Fanboys be comment creeping in this thread XD

  • Is there a poll ,
is this “cheap” or not ,
    Just confusing .

  • +6

sick of having to be okay with 128 gb ones with that price. that is ridiculous and gives the implication "you will buy it anyway" by the brand.

  • Until when is this deal?

  • +1

How much storage is actually available excluding iOS install?

Edit about 103gb left over according to Reddit

    • 128 is really cutting it close in this day and age

    • apps will take another 10gb
so acutal usable will be approximately 90gb

  • How to buy the TCN giftcards?

    • -1

Go to woolies and pick them up from there

  • I want the Pro Max 256 GB around $2200. Any deals going that cuts the price down under $2K ?
The only discounted cards I can find are $50 Teen Gift Cards to use at JB . This would mean something like 40 + cards.
Will Woolworths allow that many in one transaction ? I can't see myself going in and out a dozen times to build a bundle.
And then there is the hassle of JB staff getting pissed off for having to put so many cards through, not to mention people queued up behind me.
But if t would mean a saving of $200 I guess I could tolerate that
With Valentines Day just around the corner, is there a chance of $100 or more cards coming on discount ? Might be worth a wait do you reckon ?

    • +2

Check if this works for you.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/827332

without any GC it will be $1947 and GCs will save another $200 or so.

It is not hassle at all. Asked the staff to split payment in $100 and good excercise for both payer and payee though.

      • Thanks but I'm not a Costco member and there is none near me. It looks like JB is my only option.

  • Pro max also fown to $2099

  • +5

I love it how every iPhone deal turns into a debate about justifying luxury items 😆

    • +5

One thing I've learned from using OzBargain over the years is that people care way too much about what others choose to spend their money on.

    • +2

And an iPhone is not even a luxury product. Where are the deals for Cartier or Hermes?!

      • Haha because there are no deals. If there were deals on Porsche, it would be posted on Ozbargain!

    • +3

People need to be reminded that this is ozbargain and what constitutes a bargain is different for every person.

I used android for about 13 years (first android phone was a nexus S in 2011), bought an iPhone 13 last year and will not go back. I used to be one of those militant dweebs who would constantly shit on apple users. I've been there, done it all so don't bother arguing with me and I know I'll trigger someone by saying this but a lot of android phones are just not that good and people are entitled to not want to deal with that. (My experience is with $3-400 type models which someone was spruiking earlier in here)

*The OS is never optimised properly because the makers churn them out so quickly,
      * Masses of bloatware which can be hard to remove completely
      * Often stop getting updates after a couple years because the maker can't be bothered (just jailbreak it broo!)
      * On the lower end phones if you smash the screen the replacement can be a large portion of the phone's value so you may as well just throw it away
      * If you want a case or screen protector you often have to go online. I bought a phone and in the few days before the protector showed up I managed to put a deep scratch the screen

Instead I wanted something that just "works". I know will get updates for 4-6 more years, I can get a screen protector or new case just about anywhere, etc. etc. Even a couple years ago I would never spend what I did on a phone but now I really do think it's worth it.

      • +1

You are still going to get the “but Android” crowd.

I never understood why some Android users get so offended by what other people spend their money on. They take people buying Apple products as a direct affront to them.

I’ve never really got into buying Lego models, because they are a tad expensive, but I don’t spend every post on Lego going “don’t buy it, it is just expensive plastic blocks”.

Personally I have the Apple ecosystem because I have an iPad and Apple Watch and you need the iPhone to go with them. However, I do agree that Apple just works. You get a lot of iOS updates which means my iPhone XS is purring away until I change it in the next year of so when the iOS updates run out. Also the phones hold their value pretty well for trade in purposes.

More than happy if Android works for some people. Just not my bag.

        • +1

I never understood why some Android users get so offended by what other people spend their money on. They take people buying Apple products as a direct affront to them.

From my experience, immaturity and insecurity. Not being able to understand that other people have different needs/wants/desires/experiences to them. Telling themselves that they're smarter than apple users because they spent less on a phone and attacking them for it. Some part jealousy as well as it could be implied that iPhone users would be better off financially since they can afford such a phone (note this isn't really relevant anymore due to high end android phones).

          • @Herp: I see the Fandroid guys have started downvoting your comment. Frankly just a touch pathetic. Like they can erase your experience by downvoting you. They are very much “my way or the highway” aren’t they?

  • -2

A garbage phone designed by garbage people for garbage people.

  • I used to buy a new phone every year when they were cheap (not iphones, mind you).
Once I switched to an iPhone (iPhone 11 was my first iPhone back in 2019) now I only upgrade every 3-4 years if I really wanted.
Otherwise it's just a waste of money imho.
But its up to ppl to decide what makes them happy and what they wanna spend their money on :)

    • In my case it was usually an upgrade with a significant improvement. I got an iPhone 4, then iPhone 6 now I
Phone XS. I did try a Samsung at one point and gave it to my brother. He thought it was an unreliable POS as well. I’m heading overseas in September so I might get an iPhone 15 Pro from Costco before I go to get a decent camera. They have a 90 day returns policy.

  • Purchased. Could not say no when JB offered $950 trade-in price for my iPhone 14 Pro.

    • Could I buy it off you for $1000 if you're in the Melbourne area?

  • lol at having an Apple vs Android argument on ozbargain comments. I thought this was done to death already.

  • +3

Thanks for the entertainment, my first post turned out to be Android vs Apple. More debate please. 🍿

Was able to get 10% off from apple
The first guy I called, he was like I can't do a price match.
After a while, I called again, was a nice lady.
I told her I saw 1700 on jb-hifi, and she gave me $1664 offer which is 10% off

    • Which store ?

    • Can you attach a receipt so I can try get it? Thanks
