phones really are expensive aye, $1k was the upper limit years ago now we're closing in on $2k

    • +26

This year it’s closer to $3k. Insane prices really.

      • +5

Doesn’t seem to stop people buying them. So as a company why wouldn’t you charge the most ppl are willing to pay? What business says “nah I know you’re happy to pay me $100 but I’ll give it to you for $50”

        • +3

Of course it stops many people buying them.
There's a huge market for cheap (under $500) smartphones in Australia, as evidenced by the large variety of models to choose from at the major retailers. They wouldn't stock them if they didn't sell. Every sale of a cheapy, is a non-sale of a flagship.

          • @cerealJay: Not everyone buys their phones outright.

          • +6

@cerealJay: The people who buy cheap phones is not the target market Apple is chasing. Just like the target market for Gucci is not someone who likes cheap bags. Every sale of a cheap bag is a non sale for a Gucci bag (see how nonsensical that last sentence was?)

            • +1

@illusion99: The target market Apple is chasing is "people who want a phone". That's why the price difference between the cheapest SE iPhone and most expensive iPhone is around $2000. Your claim that people "don't stop buying" the most expensive iPhones, is incorrect, and Apple knows this. That's why they have the SE models.

        • +15

          No you didn’t, don’t lie

        • +3

You must've traded in an extremely valuable phone for that.

          • +10

@hamwhisperer: He didn't say he got it from a store…could have been from the back of a truck…

            • +3

@illusion99: Next post will probably be "What does 'IMEI blocked' mean?"

          • +7

@hamwhisperer: Yeah you traded in the $2k phone you bought last year. Lol

          • +3

            @hamwhisperer: I traded my s21 ultra which is 3 years old(which i got in a previous trade deal for $500), and got the s24 ultra + case+ battery pack+ a tablet+ a year of accident warranty for $950.

Samsung is pretty reasonable with their trade offers and loyalty bonuses. Apple is not.

            • @dreamtime: I'm trying to replicate this (but with trade in of a much older phone - Note 10+), but I can't see how you got a new phone, tablet and accessories for only $950?

        • -2

$600 for S24 Ultra by trading in Fold 5?
          I win. I got TCL 20 R 5G for 80c/mth for 2y = $19.2, minus inflation ;)
That's better than pre-iPhone 12, which was banned in France for excessive radiation :( Galaxy 10+has the least radiating, ~1/10 of iPhones )

    • +5

For Apple, $1k was almost a decade ago.

      • +4

Scary, isn’t it? I bought my iPhone 6 for $999 on NYE 2013.

        • +8

Did you party like it was $999 ?

    • +12

Same as houses. $1m could buy you a mansion years ago now it’ll get you something just acceptable.

      • +2

        Depends where you are.

    • +3

The same can be said about a lot of other goods/services/properties… 3 wicked wings used to cost $2.95 during that time, now the normal price is $6.45.

      • +2

Don’t forget the product that gets ozbargainers riled up the most. Ice cream - “half price should be normal price! Scam!!!”

    • +5

Supply and demand. There's a barber in Melbourne charging over $300 for a haircut and beard. Why is he getting away with it? Because there are f'ing idiots who are enabling him. No different with Apple.

      • -1

        He? I can’t think of many other services if it’s a she…….

      • -2

Lol calling them f'ing idiots is a bit extreme. You just sound jealous of rich people, do you make the same comment about 5-star hotels, first class flight, 2 million dollar cars?

        • +2

I'm not jealous of anyone. Whoever thinks this is acceptable is the very definition of a simp.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: People spending their money however they want? You could be dead tomorrow, enjoy life and do things that make you happy, which for some people is a $300 haircut, and for almost a quarter of a billion people every year it is buying an iPhone.

            • @Arronaj: There could be more "f'ing idiots" ;)

            • +1

@Arronaj: I absolutely agree with you but there comes a point where it's just taking the piss. His $300 haircut is no different to another barber charging half or even a quarter as much. But hey, as long as he can brag to his mates, right? "Doing it for the Gram". #RichFlex

    • When I worked at a phone shop around 10 years ago a mid tier phone was around $679 and an upper tier whizz bang phone was $800- $900. Ultra tier phone of something like an I-mate or the absolute bees knees the Nokia N95.

      • +5

That was almost 20 years ago…

        • +1

oh god. haha. What decade is this?

      • i-mate and N95 were selling about 20 years ago, not 10. I don't recall many i-mate devices going for under $900. The i-mate Jasjam was $1,929, and i-mate 8502 roughly $999. Upper tier certainly didn't cap out at $900 20 years ago.

        • +1

JasJam was after my time. I was selling Imate Jam, just looked it up and yep 20 years ago.

      • Are you the grumpy old man sitting in your rocking chair telling stories about 'back in my day…'

        • +1

Phones are undoubtedly better now but less interesting. The difference between shapes, OS and features was quite stark.

      • -1

That was ~ 2008 when Nokia N95 was more reliable than iPhone.
Or the better HTC TyTN II with stylus, retractable keyboard & SD card (notebook style;)
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/4326

      • Got a wave of nostalgia from N95. My goodness.

      • They had windows phones for well over $1k.

    • +1

OzBargainers are rich, they can afford it. In a recent poll on overseas travel, the vast majority of replies were "Multiple Times a Year" and "Annually".

Have a look at the following story:

      https://www.news.com.au/finance/money/wealth/average-aussie-…

"A new report has found Australians are the richest people in the world – and three times richer than the average American."

      • +3

How much of this 'richness' is actual cash that can be spent rather than 'paper wealth' tied up in property and other non liquid investments? Can't buy a $2000 phone with a house even if the house is worth $50m

      • +3

For a start the story is on the murdoch owned site news.com.au. Not exactly a reliable source of information.

A better source is the ABS data on incomes which paints a different picture …

        https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/labour/earnings-and-workin…

    • Aussie dollar is very weak against the US dollar atm and that doesn't help.

    • +1

I remember paying $1498 for my pixel 2xl. Also paid $1200 for my windows mobile phone around 2008. Top end phones always cost that much. Now we all want top end phones for budget price.

    • I remember buying the Nexus 5 back in 2013 for $399 for the 16GB model.

      • +3

Yes cheap phones were cheap back in the day! Expensive phones were expensive

        • Nexus 5 was the 🐐 of Android phones imo

          • +1

@gentlekoala5906: I had most Nexus, and my favourites were the Nexus 6P, and the nexus one with it's scroll wheel. Pixels became very expensive!

            • @onlinepred: Haha yes! I am still using a Pixel 5 as it's the closest spiritual successor to the Nexus 5 that I've experienced.

              • +1

@gentlekoala5906: Wow you are doing well! My Pixel 5 died a while back! Been through a few pixels since, hence why I jumped to iPhone

                • @onlinepred: Yeah it's still going strong! I wish Apple hadn't killed off their Mini range after the iPhone 13

  • Save $100 across these - so better percentage savings on the 128gb

  • +5

me personally will never buy anything under 256gb

    • +48

      Thanks for sharing

    • +1

what do you need all the space for?

      • +9

Modern phone cameras take giant pics, giant movies.

        • +5

And have a myriad of ways to offload them.

          • @try2bhelpful: Whats a good way to do a incremental backup to ssd?

            • +1

              @Big Deal: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B9MXQGMT/

✔【One-tap to Backup Photos or Videos 】-One-tap to auto backup your iPhone/iPad album via App anytime the external hard drive is connected.Future backups only save newly added files,to avoid storage-consuming duplicates. Also you can use in-App camera to take photos/videos,which will be automatically stored into the drive.

I think this is what you meant. Happy to discuss if not.

        • Luckily this modern era has services for that lol

      • Exactly, I don't even need 128gb.

      • by the time the system it self will expand til about 50gb,,just the system not including apps, photos, videos, etc

    • Thanks for the info. Really sweetened the deal!

  • +1

Do JB price match Costco at all? Match at $1699 with 10% off with gift cards would be good.

    • usually no. maybe with the membership fee on top

      • Thanks, jumped onto chat and they wouldn't do it. JB with 10% off at $1574 is still tempting.

    • Officeworks price beats Costco. Didn't add membership cost to the Costco price. Might be useful, if you have giftcards for OW.

  • Not really good deal. I managed to snag the 15 Pro Max 256gb for $1800 just before Xmas from Amazon

    • +4

It’s never been that cheap according to CCC. You sure it wasn’t non-AU stock?

      • +2

I find CCC sometimes fail to track some prices. I have heaps of items I bought for cheaper but CCC “lowest price” is higher. It must have something to do with how long the price stays at a certain price point.

        • I noticed this too. CCC reported lowest prices are not reliable.

    • +1

Was able to get similar price at launch last year's with the 15% off gift cards.

  • +19

I know so many iPhone "deals" get upvoted. But ozbargain or not, it's insanity spending this sort of money to scroll Reddit and tik tok.

even the excuse of "well I use it the most and I'll have it for 3 years" doesn't cut it.

maybe I'm just cooked I dunno

    • +5

Same insanity as spending $200 for a luxury branded tshirt or $20k for a Rolex or $50k for a German hatchback or $5000 for a OLED tv. You can find both cheaper and more expensive versions for every single product in the world that generally do the same thing.

      • -2

The Rolex you’ll be able to resell and get your money back (or profit) the rest I agree…..

        • +1

yeah good luck getting one at retail though..

          • @kaykay4: You need to wait for Rolex watches? Really?

It’s like $20k and you need to wait for it??????

            • @Aerith-Waifu: Rolex stores and other authorized dealers only get 1-2 Rolex watches a month from Switzerland (if that)

              • @illusion99: They definitely get more than that, everything are just in the safe at the back for the vip. They might get that much Daytonas but no way 1,2 sport models for the whole store.

They are all authorised dealers by the way, until Rolex bought Boucherer, every Rolex branded store was not owned by them.

                • +1

@JL1: Yeh I was referring to the models people actually want =)

                  • @illusion99: Haha I want a sub or a gmt and think they get more than that but I refuse to play this game. See if it supply goes back to normal!

            • @Aerith-Waifu: Well $15-$20k for the stainless steel sports models. 60k to 120k for the precious metal ones.

Not only is waiting not enough to be put on imaginary waitlist but basically you need to spend money there before they even consider selling you popular models.

      • +1

        Wait…what?! Where can I get t-shirts for $200?!?!

        https://www.hermes.com/au/en/product/h-embroidered-t-shirt-H…

        • I like that the "H" embroidery blends in

          • @semaj: And how it adds $700 to the value of the item.

          • @semaj: I know right? Totally worth it!

            • +1

@Banj0: Isn’t someone going to say “thanks bought 10”?!?

    • +4

People spend up to 14 hours a day on their phone, it's their wallet, camera, only device to pay for bills, way they do their banking, only way to speak to friends, family and busines.

I get it's expensive and I agree with you buy also if you only buy one every 5 years, it's not so bad, kinda.

      • +4

yes but a $250 device does this too. I'm not justifying it's use, I'm justifing the cost of said use.

        • +8

          For a far worse experience

          • -1

@mon4rkh: outside of the camera, unlikely.

            • @Mortgagetightass: I think the screen is an area where cheap phones have it much worse off. If someone was to watch a lot of videos on it. Also more expensive phones with better hardware tend to work for longer?

              • -1

@JL1: the screen? I think it's the opposite.. example the G84 from Motorola is $330…

                has a 120hz pOLED with 1300 nits of brightness…

but generally yes, build quality and software/security updates are often reserved for more premium devices.

          • @mon4rkh: Probably a pretty comparable experience for 99% of average person use cases.

        • +3

A $5000 car does 90% of what every more expensive car does. Does that mean nobody should buy anything but the cheapest possible car?

          • @illusion99: I mean the cheapest car in aus is nearly 20k new. I dunno where you've been.

      • But can it download a car?
