While they are sorta handy they are fiddly when the diaphragm collapses and they don’t last more than a few months before the trigger craps out. Is there a better built alternative?

    • +9

The version I bought over a year ago doesn’t have a diaphragm anymore. Still going strong 1+ year with almost daily use

      • +5

That's right. These are a great product

    • +4

Yep. They listened to complaints and got rid of the collapsing diaphragm a little while ago. If you still have it, definitely throw it out and get the newer one. It's way easier and holds a lot more oil.

/I had the old one and got rid of it for the new one.

    • +1

I had the same issue years ago as well. They've gone through a few revisions since then. Current model doesn't have a diaphragm.

Also check which model you are getting. I've seen two different models at the same shop. There's one with a white cylinder on the underside of the lid next to the tube, this is the one to go for as it has their 'flairosol' mechanism which essentially causes the head to spray the full volume over a second rather than the other models that don't have it that just squirt the full trigger press straight away. Good for when you want to evenly coat a surface, I've been using it on my bbq for over 2 years now with canola oil.

      • +2

        I think I've tried 3 versions now.

First with the diaphragm bag. I liked it more than v2 cos you could use it a lot longer before having to refill it, as the it kept more oil near the straw.

Since gotten a 3rd version, slightly different spray head and bottle connector size, but importantly the straw is a lot longer meaning it bends and can be positioned the front edge. So that when the bottle is tilted down (cos that's how most people spray into pans and what not…), the actually draws from where the liquid pools.

    • +4

I'm sure we went through this a few days ago.
Not sure what you're doing with it jv but maybe try cleaning the nozzle after a few months?

    • -2

i’ve found if you add about 5-10% water to the oil in the reservoir (ie just a dash), it comes out as a mist instead of a stream. You just have to shake the bottle once or twice immediately before spraying.

      • +3

Spray water and oil into you frypan and see what happens.

        • +1

Yes mate, have done this. It works fine. Hint: it’s not the same as pouring oil and water into a hot pan together!

      • very bad idea

    • +1

Incorrect. I have had 2 for a year and they are great.

      • -2

I had 2 within a week, and they are crap.

        Maybe you have low standards,

        • Why did you have two within a week?

Maybe you have low OzB IQ

  • +4

These are great. I use them on a regular basis. Never had a problem that some others have encountered.

    • +1

Yes I had mine for years and never had a problem. I always tried made sure it was over half full.

  • +1

    These are rubbish.
    These are great.

    One of these is true!?

    • +2

      Both can be true, lol

I purchased 2 quite a while back, one was great, the other just squirted a stream, Amazon sent a replacement with no issues.. .

After a few months use they seem to leak a little, you end up with odd dribbles of oil down the trigger which is a bit annoying, but they still work fine…

      • +1

Give it a clean. I clean mine when they start acting up and they are good as new again

  • Just ordered one. I'll see how it goes. Hopefully no leaks

  • -5

Surprised ozbargain love these so much. I bought one in the last half price posted deal. Filled it with olive oil, it broke the second meal I tried to use it with. Threw the cheap POS in the bin.

    • +2

Using it for a year with no issue

    • +2

How did it break your meal? So the first meal was fine?

      • +10

The seared salmon fillet was found in the corner of the kitchen, sobbing uncontrollably.

    • They are not great for olive oil, particularly in a cool climate. Was it cold when that happened?

Been using them for a few with other oils and they last 1-2 years in my experience

      • -2

So these only work in Queensland?

      • These are also good for cleaning. I have one filled with vinegar that I keep in the bathroom for spraying the shower glass to clean off the water stains, plus another with bleach I use to spray the dunny. I also have one filled with caustic soda, great for drain grates, super dirty pots, etc., no need to buy cans of oven cleaner.

        • I do the same. A bit of Morning Fresh, a bit of disinfectant, top it up with water and you have a dirt cheap spray and wipe solution that'll clean away grease and grime with no streaks.

        • +1

Couldn't you just put vinegar in a $1 spray bottle or an empty cleaning spray bottle?

          • @Cheaplikethebird: These decor bottles are sturdy and IMO provide the best misty spray - the vinegar collects on the glass without running.

            • @afoveht: When did you buy yours?

              • @Cheaplikethebird: ? I've bought numerous over the years. Most recently maybe 6mo ago.

                • @afoveht: Ah, I just had issues with the ones I bought at the start of last year. Was wondering if you were using a different version.

                  • @Cheaplikethebird: I know I've had one that did the stream rather than a misty spray but I don't remember if I binned it or fixed it up by cleaning it.

    • +1

been using it for over 2 years, zero issues. Although after you wash it, the spray might feel a little out of the way. But always came back right after spraying fast for a few times.

    • +3

dont abuse the neg button pls

    • +3

A better idea probably would have been to return it and see if it was just a faulty one rather than waste your money. I have 2 and both work perfectly.

    • +1

Surprised you didn't return it if it broke the second time you used it. They work great, I got mine in June of 2022 and it's still going without any issues. I use it several times a week. I use olive oil. I'm getting a second one with this deal to fill with peanut oil.

  • Ordered 1 thanks

  • +1

Mines been going strong for at least 2 years.

  • Will this work with massage oil?

    • +12

It does but it makes your food taste really bad, I recommend sticking with regular cooking oil.

      • Why do I need to spray food? Can this also spray non food things?

        • I'm waiting for the answer too!

  • +2

Has anyone used the $5 oil sprayers from Kmart, are the Decor ones worth the extra cost?

    • +1

      Hey nice find!
Always happy to learn about alternatives.

  • +3

Bought 2, both leaked, maybe my oil was too thick? Bought this instead

    • +1

This looks so much better than the plastic crap from Décor.

  • +1

I want to know if the OP grilled his girlfriend over this.

  • May be a completely noob question, is it different from aerosol canola spray once filled with canola oil?
Air fryer manual says not to use aerosol oil sprays, does it mean I can use this one? TIA

    • +1

Yes, you can use this one, however it might not be spraying your oil as nicely as the aerosol one. Depends on the oil and the pump.

You can also pour some oil on a brush and spread a thin layer wherever you need, which might be the less messy (and cheaper?) way.

    • Aerosol oil can hang in the air, which means you can end up with it against the element in an airfyer, which can cause issues. This just sprays oil which falls to the bottom of the area. Perfectly safe to use with an airfryer. I wouldn't recommend spraying it into an air fryer that is on, put the drawer on a bench a spray.

  • +4

I regret buying one of these on a previous 'deal'. Regardless of whether some work in certain circumstances, it's a lousy plastic item that barely does something useful.

  • I use these as spray bottles for multipurpose cleaners as well as for oil. Has a really satisfying continuous mist

Been 2 years and these bottles have copped a lot of drops, but they're still working well.

I clean them (as best as possible) every time I refill them, perhaps that helps

  • -2

POS. Mine which I ordered approximately a year and a week ago broke the moment I used it, so did the replacement. If you haven't bought yours in the last year then kindly STFU.

I use a piece of paper towel to spread it instead, works way better and use about a third the oil. It'll be a long time before the cost would have me break even on another one of these.

    • A paper towel doesn't work very well to spray on potatoes etc in the air fryer / oven tray.

      • You're using this to spray on potatoes?? Toss em in a bowl with some oil mate, toss in a little salt and some dried herbs if you enjoy flavour.

    • +3

Telling people to SFTU here won't work well for you.

  • +1

Mine has been going for a year and it is great. I use safflower oil in it and it mists well and two pumps and my pan is perfectly covered in a fine mist of droplets. I go through so much less oil now.

  • yair - got one from WOW after a previous ozb posting and use it regularly - good for small area spray on e.g. a steak before searing, or just a dab in the pan for frying something small - or multiple sprays for more

leaks from the nozzle or somewhere can make the top a bit oily after a while, but a quick wipe down with tissue makes it non-slip again

    recommended

oh - caveat - the direction can be confusing - more than once I fired it the wrong way like onto myself - so suggest getting a permanent marker pen and drawing a big arrow on the top showing the direction of the spray so you don't make the same mistake I did.

  • Turned up today. I’m in the POS camp. Filled with peanut oil, squirts a jet of oil as opposed to a mist. Tried again with olive oil, same result.

  • Bought two of these a year ago. They have always sprayed a mist. Just bought two more on this deal, both spray a stream, no mist. Pretty disappointed.

Anyone saying that they bought it x years ago and still going strong… that isn't a good thing as far as this deal goes. Obviously the quality was a lot better x years ago and it's crap now.
