Business Class Return to Tokyo, Japan: SYD from $2387, MEL $2461, BNE $2485 on Fiji Airways via Nadi @ Beat That Flight

870

While there are some exceptional China Southern prices to Japan, sometimes it's nice to travel in a bit more style, and Business Class fits that bill!

Aircraft: Combination of A350, A330 and 737 Max 8s.
Luggage: 2 checked bags

On many of the dates, Virgin will also show up. While a good price, they're on a 737 narrow-body the whole way, which just doesn't quite compare, unfortunately.

The cherry blossom or sakura is never perfectly predictable, but some early predictions are below:

A friend has a video series on the 10 Best Cherry Blossom Sakura Spots in Japan - Tokyo, Yamanashi! [4K] (CC)

Clicked on a random Sydney date…outbound journeys are all in excess of 12hr, return most are >24hr. Seems like a lot of mucking around just to get a slightly cheaper J class fare.

    • +2

Correct. From Melbourne it was 31 hours outbound and 36 hours return. Thats 3 times longer than JAL. Sure, the business seat is nice but you're sitting in a plane and layover for 30+hours. Insane.

      • +3

Get some beach in you son

      • 31+36 hours - jeebus priest ! and 6 across seats in 3 pairs look barely wider than other airlines' premium economy - CA business class was 4 across with single seat privacy - not sitting next to a random with just a little head wing for privacy - and are these lay flat seats which I want for a long flight ?

        looks like nah - https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/travel/fiji-airways-busin…

so that's a nah from me

  • +1

They perfectly avoid the school holiday period, nice!

  • It’s a bit better than “slightly cheaper” but depends on whether you are getting a sale price or not.

  • +6

Random flight departing Melbourne: 18 hour transit in Nadi on the way there, 23 hours on the way back. What in tarnation! No thanks.

    • +1

LOL WOW those are long time hanging around. You be stuff before getting there and you be stuff coming back.

EDIT: Remind me when I was heading to Japan a few months ago with Singapore Air from ADL. 7 hrs flight in the morning then 8-9 hrs transit at Changi Airport then then took the 11pm over night to Tokyo for about 7 hrs. As you can see almost 24hrs LOL never again. It was a long long day and very tiring.

      • +2

We did a 1 hour transit through Changi with Singapore on both legs, and about a 4 hour transit coming home. That was enough. This sounds like..torture.

        • +2

Lounge access really helps with long layover in Changi.

          • @nightelves: It does, but there's always the transit hotel or the sleeping rooms for a few hours kip. When I was (a lot) younger I always enjoyed walking between the terminals from 1 through 5…it's a good way to stretch legs (it's several km) and enjoy the liminal spaces you find in the empty departure lounges way out on the "arms" of terminal 2. Best time is between midnight and 5am, fewer people obviously and emptier spaces like the sunflower garden and cinema.

    • +5

Yeah I'm definitely starting to favour faster flights that cost more.

Sitting in airports or having annoying periods of checking luggage in and out of flights just isn't worth it.

Especially when that airline has a history of no hotels/activities for extended layover periods.

  • +5

Few years ago, I was stuck in Japan for a week because Fiji airline decided to cancel the flight and next available is in 5 days. No accommodation provided, You can not even find a representative from Fiji airline in Japan airport. Never flight with Fiji airline again.

    • +7

There are worse places to be stuck! Nonetheless horrible situation.

    • Would TI cover you in that case?

I wouldn't mind an extra few days in Japan if someone picked up the tab for hotels.

  • can't tell from the description but is this to haneda or narita airport?

    edit: its to Narita

  • +1

    Flat bed?

    • +1

Only on the A350 routes (SYD-NAN)

      • +2

Yeah they look alright, A330 looks more like a domestic business / international premium thing. Probably explains the pricing.

    • At the airport :)

  • +3

    Fiji Airways

    737 Max 8

Sounds like a match made in heaven

    • if you've got Tinder, we've got the match !

      'ah - my last flame'

  • +2

Narrow body business class is really more of a premium economy.

  • 18hr 30min layover plus A330 preimum economy type of bussiness seat from NAN-NRT.
    No thx

    • It's not really premium economy as the usually only go up to 40 inches pitch (102cm),whereas this seat is upto 60 (152cm). This is the old style Business class which was mostly prevalent from the 90s to the 2000s.

The seats the have are known as angled flat beds, which are different to later seats that changed to a lie flat design. Their obviously not as good as lie flat but probably better than the premium economy recliners.

  • +2

Upvoted to encourage/motivate OP for more business class flights deals (albeit Fijian). Would be even greater if more options (SQ / ANA?) :D

  • Just about gets a +1 but you'd only want to fly out of the ports that have the a350 and have an interest in a day in Fiji

  • I cannot buy flight ticket, because I don't have money :(

    • +7

have u considered a life of crime?

      • Everyday we hustling OzBargaining!

      • Plz explain more :D

  • Brisbane class im poor i need economy

  • Flying Bsusiness class with Fiji airways to Vancouver. Curious how their A350 business class is - ive heard Fiji airways is known to swap their air craft….id be so upset if I got an A330 instead

  • +1

These prices makes me not want to ever leave my work with my current airline, nothing will beat or come close to standby prices.

    • Hey @HunterxHunter9000 , out of curiosity, can you tell us more about standby prices and how the process works?
You don't have to tell us the airline, but I'd love to hear from you about how it works. I assume you log into a portal and add yourself to a standby list? Are the flights free or discounted by a certain %? Do you add yourself to the business standby list and get knocked back to economy if no business available? Do you have visibility on how full the flight is at the time you book?

      • +2

Hey @ryefig certainly i can help answer your quires. You log in to a portal where you can view the available seats for your airline as well as those of other airlines based on their alliance groups. The system uses color-coded labels (green, orange, and red) to indicate the likelihood of securing a seat. For your own airline, you can book up to business class, and first class becomes accessible after 10 years of service. After six months, you gain access to the alliance portal, allowing you to book standby discounted fares with other airlines. While most alliances only offer economy class, some provide the option to book business class.

Confirmation of standby tickets typically occurs one hour before the flight, but some may offer confirmation up to 24 hours in advance for flights with ample availability. A round-trip journey from SYD to Tokyo in business class costs $530, while an economy class ticket is priced at $320. This is for direct 10h flights.

If you book Business, you get put into economy with upgrade priority to business if there's any available within 1 hour of departure.

        • +1

          Woah tell me more.

        • +1

Wow, that is very interesting. Quite a scary thought of having confirmation just 1 hour before a flight, but for those prices the uncertainty is worth it!

          Thanks for sharing!

          • +2

@ryefig: Normal for those on standby or special tickets (employee discounted tickets).

Another relative of mine used to work for SQ, and their staff were put at the very bottom of the wait list (full fare paying passengers > discounted fare paying passengers > redemptions >>>>>>>>>>> staff benefits). Often I would have to drive to the airport wait with bags and see if they were lucky enough to get on. If not, back to hotel it was.

            • +1

@t25: Exactly how it is, i get stuck sometimes in transit if my destination needed a transit which is why i always make sure i have the visa for the transit incase i want to go out to hotel/visit the country etc, sometimes up to 24h to days to get on since staff are the last to get on after all paying / point redemption passengers. and if its on an alliance flight your even more down the list since own airline staff get on first.

              • +1

@HunterxHunter9000: @HunterxHunter9000 Makes sense. I suppose you would want to allow a few days on the return side of an overseas trip just to be sure you will make it back in time for work.
Guessing that any discount on confirmed fares (if that even is a benefit) is still much more expensive than a standby fare..

                • @ryefig: my airline does give a 25% confirmed seat discount 4 times a year so at least its a backup if i am really stuck so it can come handy but like you said yeah most you'd make sure to leave your holiday a bit early to make sure you can come back on time before work. Our staff benefit can get revoked if we use it on days where were supposed to be at work or on sick days, also if your attitude is not good, if your not dressed appropriately etc there's a lot of restrictions.

  • while sakura = cherry blossom, the attendance for viewing cherry blossoms is commonly called hanami = "flower viewing"

or sakura hanami = cherry blossom viewing - commonly seen in parks full of the blue plastic picnic mats sat on by increasingly drunk and noisy celebratory groups of young people eating and drinking
