Up to 40% off Atypical and AXIL (eg. Candid Blend $95 for 3kg Delivered) @ Direct Coffee

Hey Folks,

Hope the year has started well for everyone! Given it's a new year we though we'd do something new with a deal focused on those heading back to the office (or who just drink a lot of coffee!).

It's also a good chance to give a bit of love to AXIL's newest blend - PELE. This blend has more pronounced fruit notes than their Seasonal blend, however it's not as wild as some of the other blends we've stocked in the past. If you drink with milk and like the sound of it, I'd give it a go :)

We've added a 3kg option for a lot more of the coffees that we stock. We've started with a focus on espresso roasts and blends. But if there's a good response we'll look to widen out the range. However, do you check out the champagne processed natural from Riverdale that's roasted for filter - very tasty!

In response to some slow interstate deliveries, we've also brought back free Express Post for all of our non-Victorian customers.

As always, please ask if you'd like a recommendation.

Cheers,
Tim

For sure, we always reply to and follow up on reviews like this. From memory, where we landed on this was it being a matter of taste preference. Their preference was towards more full bodied, choc forward coffees that you'd expect to find from Brazil, Colombia etc. We made some adjustments to the description as well to avoid this from happening again.

Store seems to do a great job at replying to reviews that are not positive and owning up where the mistake is possibly on their end

Appreciate you noticing that, it’s something we always try to stay on top of.

Reviews and feedback can be a challenge, for example with this coffee we had someone reach out by email to ask when we’d be bringing it back. But that’s not seen publicly because it’s an email.

Certainly don’t want it to sound like a whinge, but it is one of the little quirks.

  • Wasn’t a fan of the PELE blend as per my review you responded to. FYI I couldn’t find an option anywhere to respond to your reply, not sure if it’s possible?

I’d be willing to give it another go if people have had success with it. All I got was burnt coffee with milk

I was using the inbuilt grinder in my bes870 which could have had something to do with it

    • Sounds like you over extracted. Probably just need to adjust the grind size for the beans.

      • The issue could have been my inbuilt grinder. Going below 3 would make it drip, above 5 or 6 it would pour too quick. Everything inbetween was burnt tasting. I was dosing between 18-19g

I have a proper grinder now, maybe it'll be a different story if I decide to try them again

        • Could've been your grinder, temp, water, pump/OPV pressure, yield weight, extraction time, etc, etc. All these things play a part in being able to extract the correct range of flavours.

    • No threading on reviews I’m afraid, after my initial reply it just becomes a normal email conversation.

I’m struggling to find your order though, what was the order number?

      • 24256 , I only purchased a 250g bag in a 1kg order. Might have needed more to play around with

        • Cheers! Worth trying again with a new grinder, but it still won't be as out there as Raspberry Candy.

  • cant go wrong with candid blend. just ordered one!

    • Cheers!

      • thanks for the quick post. received on 25th (just before the public holiday) which worked really well for me.

        • Glad to hear it :)

I ordered the Candid blend last time and wow it's amazing

    • So glad to hear that :)

  • Hey Rep,
Any chance of getting a mix on the 3 x 1kg value pack e.g: 1 each of Atypical Candid, 1 Axil Seasonal, 1 Axil heavyweight etc ?
    Thanks

    • Yep this is certainly on the to do list :)

  • @directcoffee I would love to see a filter on the dirrectcoffee site on the Bundle buy page that lets me quickly get a view of which beans work well with "milk-based" coffee as opposed to filter or espresso (black). Perhaps you could rename the "Roast Type" filter heading to "Coffee type" and add "milk-based" to the existing filter options you have there? This would make your site more centered around the visitor's use-case rather than the "Roast Type" of the bean (easy to fall into this trap given you are a coffee expert).

I've definitely got this on the to do list, but I've been struggling to think of a neat way to do it. I quite like this one - I'll have to jump into the backend and see how it could work. Thanks!

  • Any recommendations of decaf for brew?

  • @directcoffee any info on when the atypical Ethiopia Guji Alaka might become available again?

    • We're unsure on this one. Atypical have had good feedback, as have we - but the poor review has probably led to softer sales than we'd expect. All that being said, I'm not sure if it's something we would be restocking.

      • That is terrible news!

It is excellent coffee - my favourite - so I (obviously) can’t understand why it would be poorly reviewed.

I have tried the other Atypical beans (candid blend) and found them utterly uninspiring. No idea why they are rated so highly on the reviews!

You guys are running a business though, so understandably you’ve got to stock what sells well at the end of the day.

        • Honestly, the big theme for me with this is personal taste. That's what explains the review (along with some more tweaks to steer a customer like this away from it). As for the Candid, if you're someone who loves a natural Ethiopian it makes sense that Candid wouldn't be the favourite of your taste buds. However, they're very different coffees so I find them hard to compare side by side.

  • No more Riverdale Estate Champagne Natural - Filter roast @ $49? Link appears to be broken. Thanks

    • Sold out I'm afraid - I'll get it updated now.
