Unlocking Motorola Defy+ (For those who got one for $99 from Telstra!)

Here is my tutorial to unlock your Defy+. Be aware, that even though this method has worked for me, there are always risks involved when tweaking with the phone's software, but as long as you don't do anything stupid (unplug the phone during flashing, trying this method with 2% battery, etc) then you should be fine. In the case where the phone may go into a boot loop, all you need to do is wipe the phone via recovery and reflash a ROM and that should do the trick.

I am not responsible for any devices that explode, implode or spark the end of the world.

Note: If you're having issues with download locations, etc scroll down to Forgot69's post

Step1: Rooting

Check your phone software. If your baseband is "EPU93_U_00.59.01" or below, you can root your phone using the following software.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682

If your baseband is higher than the above ("EPU93_U_00.61.03" will most likely be the case here), you need to root the phone via the following method:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1595013

Steps

  1. Download the software provided in the link above. Extract them both to the same folder (You can ignore firmware.z01 and extract firmware.zip as the two files are linked.

  2. Download the software in the following link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100585

  3. Install RSD Lite and the drivers that suit your Windows version (x32, x64)

  4. Open RSD Lite as Administrator

  5. Turn off your Defy+ and follow the instructions here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25243714&post… - on how to get the phone into recovery mode so we can flash the files

  6. Go back to the first link that provides the software and follow the basic instructions there. Select the files in RSD Lite and flash the software mentioned in the link in the order provided by pressing "…" on RSD Lite. IT IS VITAL THAT YOU ENSURE THE PHONE IS CONNECTED TO THE PC PROPERLY. THERE IS A HIGH PROBABILITY THAT THE PHONE WILL BRICK IF THIS PROCESS IS INTERRUPTED SO MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE NO PENDING WINDOWS UPDATES OR ANYTHING THAT WILL FORCE THE COMPUTER TO SHUT DOWN.

Voila, your phone is now rooted. Now we prepare to flash CM7,9 or 10 (whichever you prefer; I'm staying away from CM10 as JB isn't fully stable just yet). I flashed mine with CM9, so we'll be using that for this tutorial as we know it works with the unlocking.

  1. Download 2ndInit from here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212 - IF YOU ALREADY HAVE CYANOGENMOD ALREADY INSTALLED, THIS IS NOT NECESSARY

  2. Pop that onto your phone, enable non-market apps to be installed, turn on USB Debugging (Settings -> Applications -> USB Debugging) and start up the app. Click the one single button in the middle and we now have CWM (ClockWorkMod) installed.

  3. Download the most recent CM9 Nightly by quarx2k and the CM9 GAPPS here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1618904 - and put them onto the root of your SD card. Then download "ICS_Defy_softunlock_v1.3(EPU_U_00.59.01).zip " and " Baseband_change(EP93_U_00.59.01).zip " provided in this link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483297 - and copy those files onto the root of your SD card. Those who wanted to go to CM7, download "GB_Defy_softunlock_v1.3(EPU_U_00.59.01).zip" instead

  4. Power down the phone and turn it back on. Wait for a blue LED to appear at the top left of your phone and press Volume- when it does.

  5. When the recovery screen pops up with the rabid rabbit at the bottom, navigate through the menu with the volume buttons and select the highlighted option with the power button. Select Recovery and then Custom Recovery.

  6. Now, it is VITAL that we do a phone backup here incase anything goes wrong. Nav to Backup and Restore and select Backup All.

  7. Once that's done, go to Wipe data/factory reset and then wipe the cache/dalvik cache

  8. Once that's done, go to Install zip from sdcard and select choose zip from sdcard and select the CM9 ROM that you downloaded earlier.

  9. Boot up your phone and if it doesn't work (stuck in boot loop, black screen after Motorola logo, etc) then redo steps 4-9 (skip 6)

  10. If the phone is booting up correctly, then power down the phone again, and enter 2ndInit by pressing the power- button when the blue LED flashes

  11. This time, install the GAPPS you downloaded earlier to install Google Play, etc

  12. Now we can apply the software unlock by installing "Baseband_change…" first and then "ICS_Defy_softunlock…" after.

  13. Wipe the cache when you are done, go to advanced and then wipe the dalvik cache.

  14. Power down the handset once you have finished, pop in your non-Telstra simcard and hooray! Your handset is unlocked.

HAVE FUN, OZBARGAINERS

        • yes bhaji.

        • Thx

        • I did some more research…the site is not trustworthy. Stay away.
          http://www.reviewcentre.com/Mobile-Phone-Unlocking-Services/…

        • I am getting my ZTE T60 phone unlocked from them…it's one of the trickiest phone to generate an unlock code for. Their manual unlocking representative William has contacted me to provide him a bit more information..which I just have…so let's see if they prove to be genuine ….otherwise it's only $6 on stake….and I'm sure I would get a full refund thru PayPal if they are unable to generate the unlock code.

          Will keep you guys posted.

        • I think you should. I didn't really need mine unlocked but figured for $10 at unlockmyphone I should take one for the team. This one is cheaper still if it works.

I guess I could always do it and see if they provide me with the same code, but basically, I don't want to! It might be correct, and I'd be out of pocket another $6.49. lol

Let us know how it goes.

        • Ok I have just received an email saying they are unable to generate the unlock code for my ZTE T60 phone. They have said that their accounts team would refund my money in next 4-5 days…so should be good.

From their emails, they seem very professional to me. I think for just $6.49 they are worth giving a try to see if they can generate an unlock codes for Defy+.

        • Before I read this I paid them the $6.49 and they sent a code in a couple of hours which didnt work. I sent them email asking for a refund they sent one back asking a few basic questions which I answered. 10 minutes later I received a refund. I still have no idea if they are capable of actually doing it.

        • The code for thie Motorola is a 16 digit code and these guys send 2 eight digit codes, they would know by now these codes don't work.

A waste of time, if you ask me, I'm starting to believe they mayt make money of people who don't claim their refund.

    • Slightly more (at $10) than your $6.49, but if you have no success there, unlockmyphone.net has proven successful for me and others.

      • Thanks..

      • Anybody successfully unlocked the Defy+ from this website? Thanks

        • post deleted … I should learn to read properly.

    • I used www.cellunlocker.net and they sent me the correct code on the second attempt…only costed me $15. Too easy.

  • .

  • Hey guys, followed the tutorial and got the phone rooted and updated. the software is much better, but its killing the battery. I'm only getting about 11hrs on standby. any ideas?

  • HI guys, I have tried a completely install the CM 10 1102 build with softunlocker which has been working like charm so far, not data drops and not reboot!

    here is my steps:
    1. Start from the begining of flashing two ROMS to get rooted! plenty of links you can find on net.
    2.install 2ndInit ,pls check OP.
    3.install the CM10 1102 build straightaway. .
4.install the CM 10 GAPPS here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1618904 - and put them onto the root of your SD card.takes long time to reboot first time. be patient
5.always remember to wipe data and reset to factory.
6.restart manually few times with your Telstra SIM.
7.then install the baseband change and the 2NTBOOT_Defy_softunlock(EPU_U_00.59.01). I didnt wipe the data this time. restart the phone for another 2-3 times . then put your non telstra SIM card in it!
    8. the data drops just like nightmare, I try to fix the battery drainning prob by installing the juice defender , the data drops gone since.
Never data drops and no reboot self. just the battery not last long enough, maybe a day?

    • I'm getting 1.5 days with light usage. As as it full charged in the morning.. i dont have to charge till the evening of the next day

  • hey guys
got CM9 on my defy plus, on TPG prepaid. calls and data work, SMS receiving works. but can't send SMS. called TPG and did a few trouble shooting things. they say every thing is ok from their end. the SIM works perfectly on my old phone. Any ideas?

  • Cm9 I used before just for 2-3 days I had to delete it as it is not usable at all , data drops and reboots itself all the time.

CM 10 is the way to go.

  • I moved back to CM7 (http://quarx2k.ru/cm7-nightly-defy+/cm-72-20120923-NIGHTLY-D…). CM10 proved to be too problematic. Jellybean was nice but Quarx's custom kernel (based on version 2.6.x, officially used by Gingerbread only) came with too much compromise - video recorder lag and general instability.

ICS and Jellybean proper use kernel 3.x.

According to this CM10 is not ready to be used. Well my opinion is that it is still in development… It may or may not be fixed by the end of the year. Only then would I upgrade.

Underclocked CM9 is pretty stable, but CM7.2 is probably the best for stability.

CM 7.2 also turns on much faster, and this is important to make life saving calls. Imagine your best friend just had a heart attack, your phone takes forever to boot, man that sucks… That's up to you to decide what to put on your phone. It's yours.

Here is something else that is interesting on CM7.
      http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1910240

Hmmm… Didn't mean to reply to this post, but hey, um, it's not directed at you. lol. X_X

      • CM 7.2 also turns on much faster, and this is important to make life saving calls. Imagine your best friend just had a heart attack, your phone takes forever to boot

Er, people switch off their phones?
I'd probably have a heart attack if I found out my phone was switched off…

    • Hey Ponyo, did you have to to flash a different gapps, baseband changer and softunlocker for CM7? if so can you point me to where you get them?

  • I still can't get my TPG sim to send SMS! flashed CM9 and CM10 so far…. changed baseband and mobile network carriers… still no luck. I'm gonna try CM7 next. I would appreciate any suggestions!

  • ok, tried CM7, still can't send SMS…

    • I don't know if this is required.. but try anyway.. remove SIM from the phone and run through the steps 3-14. Once everything's done (step 14), power down the phone and up again. Only then do you put in your non telstra sim.

      • I've tried this, now I don't even get a signal! no data, no reception, no SMS!!!!! help!!!!

        • Sorry mate :(
Anyway glad all worked out for you in the end

  • +3

OMG! Thank you so much! LolwutMikka & Forgot69 - you guys are legend!

2 hours for me to do this, including downloading.
Kept scrolling between LolwutMikka and Forgot69 posts, mistook a few steps, but everything works fine in the end!

I noticed now that it's on custom ROM, there is no more Motoblur, YAY!!

Kudos to you two once again!

  • ok, fixed! after flashing CM7, CM9 and CM10, reflashing the baseband changer and softunlock numerous times with no sim, TPG sim, Telstra sim…. I fixed the problem with one last desperate try. I swear I tried this when the problem first started! The phone now works to send SMS via TPG sim card!
    1. Went to phone, dialed ##4636##
    2. chose phone info
    3. press refresh under SMSC.
    4. Number came up as 61411990001p145
    5. I changed this to 0411990001
    6. then press update.

    this fixed it for me.
I'm not sure if it was a combination of reflashing ROMs, and the above… but I swear I tried this before and it didn't work

Incidentally by baseband is on Australia Telstra! but I'm not changing anything now I got it working!

  • +1

Which CM10 nightly did you try? I've tried 20121118 and the unlock doesn't work unless you turn off the iosched_sio (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34263360&post…), but this makes the phone extremely slow…

    • Also struggling to unlock CM10-20121118-NIGHTLY-mb526. Anyone else?

      I'm stuck in "starting apps".

      • Yeah, confirmed, CM10-20121118-NIGHTLY-mb526 does not like ICS_Defy_softunlock_v1.3.

I put in CM10-20121102-NIGHTLY-mb526 and it worked right away.

  • So Im getting frustrated. I bought one of these a couple of days ago. Ive been through the procedure several times (wiping & clearing cache etc) and have not been able fully unlock the phone. Ive got it unlocked using by changing to airplane mode, runing bp_ptc in a terminal window but it's only good until it been rebooted.

The only rom that I can install and actually work is CM9. Both CM10 & CM7.2 end up in boot loops even after reflashing the stock firmware.

Ive also tried two unlocking services ( www.cellunlocker.net & code-unlocking.com ) - both sent exclty the same codes!.

Has anyone else had such problems ? Any ideas ?

    • Nevermind, I am confused…

    • Have you read the entire thread? There are fixes dotted throughout

    • www.cellunlocker.net came through with a new code which did unlocked the phone ($15). So both the free softunlock & unlocking service both worked.

  • Im sorry I didnt ask my question clearly.

Does anyone know of any reason the softunlock may not work on CM9 (after the baseband has been changed to 00.59.01) ?

There was only one fix in this thread that I could find for not unlocking which did not work for me - LolwutMikka's suggestion

"If you get that, try enabling and then disabling airplane mode. If that still fails, then do a reboot."

A variation of this (from XDA developers) works but only until the phone is rebooted (switch to airplane mode and run bp_ptc in a terminal window)

      I can answer this now.

"Download the most recent CM9 Nightly by quarx2k" as per instructions :) NOT "Download the most recent CM9 Nightly" … its the only thing Ive done differently and it went like clockwork.

  • Hey cribbydave, I am having the exact same problem as you, I cant change the baseband on the phone and I have followed the exact same instructions. What should I do?

    • I actually didnt have any trouble (that I know of) with changing the baseband. I read that sometimes the change does not show up in the phone settings though.

Here is a list of the exact files I used to install CM9.

      Firmware to root:

      DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_BLUR_SIGN_USADEFYEMARAB1B8RTGB005.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNGIBRRTGB_P023_A025_M002_Service1FF.sbf.gz

      DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_CN_SIGN_UCADEFYEMARAB1B50AA009.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNGIBRIRD15_P015_A030_Service1FF.sbf.gz
      firmware.zip

      New ROM & Unlock:

      SndInitDefy_2.3.apk (Was .zip)
      CM9-NIGHTLY-120716-Defy+.zip (Quarks)
      gapps-ics-20120317-signed.zip
      Baseband_change(EP93_U_00.59.01).zip
      ICS_Defy_softunlock_v1.3(EPU_U_00.59.01).zip

  • Thanks, got it working. Which version of CM works with ICS soft unlocker, does CM10-20121117-NIGHTLY-mb526 work with the ics softunlocker?

  • OK, forgive me for being a noob to both Android and Windows but …
Phone seems rooted AOK, but the step I fail at is installing ClockWorkMod. I have downloaded the 2ndInit file, but how exactly do I 'Pop it onto your phone'? Feel free to give me line by line instructions, I am really new at this stuff.
    Many thanks

    • Copy the .apk file onto your sd card & use the "Files" app to install it.

  • Seems as though Telstra has no more of these phones, pity, I was thinking to get another one.

  • Does anyone have problem with the cyanogen9 boot loop?
After powered it on, it went from 'M' logo to 'cyanogen9' logo and now it stuck there.
I thought I got it working already about 2 weeks ago, now that I tried it again, it doesnt go pass the blue cyanogen logo

    Any idea to solve it?

    • Reinstall the rom or restore the backup.

If that doesn't work, reflash, but sometimes you might be unlucky..

      Hardware failure? x_X

  • I found this phone to be complete garbage - continually froze or restarted. Returned it for a full refund…

    • Was that before or after you rooted it?

  • OK, sorry to be the big dumb kid at the back of the class but…
    I now have a very lovely black paperweight. I followed the instructions, and I am stuck at the stage of trying to load either CM9 or CM10 from the MicroSD card. In either case, everything looks OK until it stops and says;
    Verifying update package…
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
    E: signature verification failed
    Nothing happens past that.
If anyone has any advice, it is welcome, or if you are in Melb (E Burbs) and reckon you can fix it, beer money (and, at this time of year, beers) await. You can reach me at brannersracing at Gee Mail (I will do my best to open the email without injuring myself).
    Many thanks

    • I take it that you are doing this from 2ndinit and not the normal recovory?. I think 2ndinit has a menu item to enable/disable signiture checking. Have a look around the menus to see if you can find it.

I thought at the stage you are at it should still boot into the stock firmware. So it might be worth trying to start from step 1 again and make sure you can get the stock firmware working. The worst case is that you can buy an unlock code and run the stock firmware.

      • Sorted. I went back to the start and re-did everything. Was not running the 2nd file in RSD Lite. Soft unlocked worked, I now have 4.1.1 running on a $99 phone! Even picked up some cheap screen protectors and a case in a remainders bin. A great OzBargaineer experience, many thanks

  • Great guide, true ozbargin spirit!

For most your better off paying $10 for an unlock unless you have a few, took me 3 hours and I'm no noob

The plus is you get root and the much improved ICS with some pretty cool mods

  • +1

If anyone that missed out on one of these would like my Defy+ with CM10 (works well) on it, also a Momax iCase Pro & screen protector give me a PM. In perfect condition, I got it from this deal. $90

  • Props to the OP for this tutorial. Worked a treat. THANKS!!

  • any suggestions as to whether a koganmobile sim (telstra wholesale 3G with 97% coverage) will work in telstra defy+ without unlocking or rooting? - my plan was/is to use while travelling regional victoria & nsw , thanks!

ps these extracts from kogan website suggest that a kogan sim will work & use 850mhz, but has anyone done so?

kogan website says "You need to ensure your handset is not locked to another network. You will need a Telstra compatible handset to use your Kogan Mobile SIM card."

and that their network is underpinned by 850mhz 3G

    and

    Network Services

Kogan Mobile is the first mobile provider to use parts of Telstra’s Mobile Network for prepaid mobile services.

Kogan Mobile's service, using part of Telstra's Mobile Network -

provides a 3G coverage footprint of 97% of the Australian Population covering more than 960,000 square kilometres
has a typical download speed of 550kbps-3Mbps and upload speed of 300kbps-1Mbps (peak network download speed of 7.2Mbps)
supports these typical download speeds across the entire Kogan Mobile 3G coverage footprint not just selected metropolitan areas
has extensive breadth and depth of coverage and support by a quality network. Kogan Mobile is underpinned by over 6,600 3G 850MHz sites

    • It SHOULD work with a Kogan SIM. After all, Kogan uses a 'Telstra' network. I know that it a bit vague but, if it does not, I can vouch for the fact that these instructions work and you can root/update/unlock a Defy Plus. I am a dummy when it comes to this stuff, and it worked for me.
If not, use one of the 'buy an unlock' options described in the instructions, they seem to work.
A $99 Defy Plus on the 80c/day Unlimited Kogan plan sounds like a winning combination to me, just right for an OzBargaineer.
FYI, I have run my rooted Defy Plus on both Telstra and Voda and it works, very well.

  • Many thanks to LolwutMikka (and Forgot69). Have been able to put CM7.2 on my father in laws phone today by using this great guide.

  • Hi, I'm new at this game & have rooted the phone but can't install SndlnitDefy. I have downloaded the zipped file & put it on the SD card but can't install it . I have tried the file App & Appinstaller. I know I am missing something simple & have tried to fix in the name of learning but to no avail.Cheers

  • My phone totally crashed today after I set it back to the default performance settings.
I cannot even get to clockwork recovery.

Since it's rooted and loaded with CM9, I won't be able to get warranty.
However under normal circumstances I believe it would have failed anyway.

My guess is that these phones shouldn't be overclocked to 1000 mhz. Why Motorola did this is unknown…

  • Worked for me with CM9 installed and working nicely so far.

I had to install the nightly builds from

Latest Defy CM9 nighties by Epsylon(Defy RED Lens And Defy+)
    http://defy.wdscript.fr/defyplus-cm9/

as the recommended builds from quarx2k were not accessible for some reason

Latest Defy CM9 nighties by quarx2k(Defy RED Lens And Defy+)
    http://quarx2k.ru/cm9-nightly-defy+/

    Thanks OP.

    • Actually, that Epsylon build did not work for me with the SIM unlock so I tried to get to the quarx2k build and flashed that over the top.
Then I did the baseband and softunlock again and have tested it as working with a Vodafone SIM from Ireland roaming on the Telstra network :)

  • If anyone is interested, I'm looking to sell my Defy on, perfect condition with all the accessories - haven't even used my Telstra sim/credit yet! In Melbourne.

  • I seem to have screwed up my defy+ and now it keeps going in boot loop. The battery won't even had a chance to charge up before it goes into loop and hence I actually had to order external charger from ebay to charge the battery first.

I've tried stock & custom recovery and factory reset/dalvik cache wipe couple of times but still no joy.

Can anyone please guide me in right direction as to how I can wipe it clean and start all over again.

    • You want to download RSD-Lite and an sfb file to reimage your phone. Be careful that the sfb file is not too new or you won't be able to downgrade (and root) your phone. If it is too old then you won't be able to flash the image. Images can be found all over the internet, try to find one that matches your phone's 3G frequencies.

      • I have below file which was the one advised by LolwutMikka in original post, will this work?

        DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_CN_SIGN_UCADEFYEMARAB1B50AA009.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNGIBRIRD15_P015_A030_Service1FF.sbf

      • Retail Australian is likely to be 900/2100 (not the Telstra phone). That Telstra ROM is for the Defy not the Defy+.
