Small Business Accounting Software Recommendations

Hi Community,

We have a small business of artworks, my wife paints and sells her original artwork and prints etc. We need an accounting software to track expenses and income as well as GST for BAS statements.

I know there are plenty of options online but I am hoping to find a free version that can do the basics.

Any recommendations?

    Microsoft Excel

    • Came here to say this. The most underrated accounting software

As a myob subscriber of some years, not myob.

      XERO>MYOB

One thing that MYOB is good at, is constantly increasing its subscription prices….

I don't think you can go past Xero, that being said I think many of the mainstream services (Quikbooks, MYOB etc) are probably all similar and functional.

There are often 50% off deals for 12 months from many of them, so be sure to check those deals out.

  • I'm currently using the free tier of ZipBooks, seems OK for invoices with limited line items.

Do not use anything Reckon based….. Just evil!

For free, I use https://www.waveapps.com/. Used to support Australia but they pulled out, it still works. You just need to setup up the GST taxes.

  • Thanks everyone, got some great ideas.

  • Have a look at GU cash to see if it will help or is not going to work for you. Remember the GNU cash price is right $0.00, but it may not do what you want, so play with it and try it before you commit to it.

  • GST for BAS statements

Is the income more than $75000?

  • I use manager.io to do my bucket company+trust accounting. It’s free and easy enough to use if you’re familiar with accounting and bookkeeping concepts.

    • I'm always pretty skeptical of a product that's free, especially when the cloud version is relatively expensive at $1k a year. Does it upgrade and run in place nicely?

      • I've never used the cloud version and I'm happy enough with the free desktop version which is all I need. Have upgraded twice before and no issues.

And for more free products which I find useful, I use "Free Accounting Software" just to lodge my company and trust tax returns electronically with no fuss. As far as I know, there isn't another free software out there that can do that.

  • Have a look at https://www.freeaccountingsoftware.com.au/

Used it up until a few years ago as a sole trader business.
