Cut Cable near nbn Box

I just noticed this black cable near my NBN box which looks like it has been cut. Any idea what this cable is? No issues with internet access.

  • Old copper cable connection for the house? With NBN FTTP, regular phone copper cables are no longer used.

  • Looks like an old coax cable, you can safely just chop it off closer to the house if you just want to get rid of it.

If the cable was installed when the house was built, it was probably attached to the frame and not really possible to take out anymore, so they just chopped it off there.

  • Looks like old coax, must have run a new one for some reason (if youre on HFC NBN). As long as internet works still, shouldnt be any issue.

  • Just out of curiosity is the conduit below the NBN box meant to go all the way into the box?

    • No, otherwise the 🕷️ won’t be able to breathe.

No. Usually the conduit stops an inch or so away from the utility box. OP's is a little on the long side, but would be pretty typical in my experience.

You can see how the box isn't designed to accept conduit, with the cable finishing short, here

And, here at around 38 seconds, you can see that the holes in the utility box box are only a little bit larger than the cable itself https://youtu.be/kChdJcHsYgo?t=38

      • So the door would typically cover most of the gap in the examples you've linked? Thanks for the link.

The two extensions to the door might, but I wouldn't say "typically".

In my view the design appears intended more to reduce the risk of rain getting into the utility box rather than caring much about exposed cables. I don't think that anyone enforces any particular offset from the utility box, or cares much about the aesthetics.

I've uploaded a picture of my utility box here https://imgur.com/Aoljf8X

The black cable is the fibre from the street and the white is the cable from the utility box to the NTD inside the house. The black cable is in conduit but it stops on the other side of the weatherboard.
