Hi OzBargain!

My name is Matt, and through starting a small personal project to build myself a watch, have ended up founding Hz Watches - Australia's newest watch microbrand. I'm a long-time lurker here, and thanks to this site I've been able to jump onto a range of good deals, especially flights and watches.

Speaking as a watch collector and not a brand owner - I do objectively believe that the HZ.01 launch deal offers very good value for money! I'll leave that up to you all to decide, but I will make myself available in the comments below if you have any questions!

The HZ.01 was designed and built with everyday wear in mind, aiming to offer a light, wearable, versatile, and hassle free wearing experience - a watch that you can simply grab and go. Launching at $249AUD at 9:00am AEDT on Sunday the 28th of January, the launch sale will remain open for 48 hours. Production is currently underway, and deliveries are on track to begin in early April.

  • How often does the battery need replacing and how hard is it to do?

    • Great question! The battery life of the Ronda 507 is around 45 months, so about once every 4 years! Its a very easy process to do yourself at home if you purchase the tools ($20 on Amazon), or most key cutting places / watchmakers will be able to do it within 5 minutes for around $20!

I’ll chime in with a +1 for encouraging a local maker. I’ve only looked on my phone thus far, I want to have a better look on a larger screen before making a judgment call as to aesthetics. I agree the price is fair for a Ti watch with a quality movement, despite folks who pooh-pooh that it’s ’only a quartz’. Just because you can buy a quartz in a $10 watch that doesn’t mean the bar needs to be lowered for all watches with the same type of movement. In a similar vein, I bought a $30 automatic watch off eBay to wear as a beater but that doesn’t mean it instantly devalues my other automatics that were 10/20/30 times the price. Keep up the hard work and well done for being active in the comments.

    • Thank you - I really appreciate your support! I've added an "In the Media" page to the website, where you can check out some of the press articles, as well as our reviews (both Video and written), which give a good unbiased view into both the good and the bad! Most definitely agree with you - that is a great point! Please reach out at any time if you have any questions!

I’m sold on both the watch and your engagement. I’m looking forward to seeing it in April and very happy to support a local business.

OP, a small piece of advice, next time trying to get your watches "manufactured" in within the area with cooridantes as 54.5260° N, 15.2551° E, I guarantee you will get a 1000 plus upvote…

Yes, we all want a watch from the depths of the Baltic!

  • Was interested…but that dial.just does nothing for me.

    Are the dials standard/easily replaced?

    • +1

If you're buying a watch just to replace the dial, you're better off just buying a different watch in the 1st place…

  • Love the design and concept. Would've purchased but I'm outta inventory room. Best wishes on your project!

    • Thank you for your support!

I'm sorry OP, you can claim to be different to all the other watch start ups but this is just another Chinese made watch.

Yes it has a slightly better movement and case but at the end of the day unless it has the heritage or in house movement/design then it's no better than equivalent fashion watches. Production cost per watch of say $40 + Overheads etc etc.

    • Hi Drakesy, thank you for taking the time to comment!

Unfortunately for in house movements the barrier to entry is extremely high! There are different niches that exist within the market - and I believe that for the money when compared to fashion watches our brand stacks up extremely well.

When comparing specifications to fashion watches, you'd be hard pressed to find something with a titanium case, and sapphire crystal for this price - and if there is otherwise I'd love to see it as I might add it to my collection!

Most watch brands, including many with heritage do not use in-house movements in all of their watches. Thinking back to the Rolex Daytona of old, would this be equivalent to a fashion watch as it uses a Zenith movement, and not in-house to Rolex?

Whilst I would love to come out there with my first design being an in-house movement, not many of us can invest hundreds of thousands of dollars and hours to get there - noting that these watches generally come at a cost of thousands of dollars. If you do like in-house though, I would check out Nick Hacko as he is doing some really cool stuff!

As per the heritage - we all have to start somewhere right? All watch companies didnt have heritage until they put their first foot forward!

In relation to your production cost estimate - it's definitely very off, for that price you wouldnt even be able to get our titanium case! Add the hands, dial, strap, indices, caseback medallion, crown, and assembly costs and our production cost is eclipsing the retail price of many fashion watches.

      Cheers!

      Matt

So much Chinese hate lol - good luck getting a TI, Sapphire crystal watch made in Australia for $250, or even $2500.

We sure are good at talking sht for a country that can't manufacture sht.

Good on ya OP nice watch, I'd buy one but I'm broke for now - I like the blue one very sexc.

    • I've read all the comments & couldn't see any hating on China.

      • Doesn’t take a genius to see the comments highlighting the fact that the watch is made in China aren’t meant to be viewed in a positive light…I’m sure you know this but ur trying to be a clever boy :)

        • +1

I disagree with what you are alluding to.
I am pretty certain most here wouldn't care that their case etc are made in china.
The part which matters the most is made in switzerland, the rest of the body being made in china is not an issue for the community. I think they just wanted the detail transparent as the op mentioned Swiss made.

@maverickjohn: Fair enough, I figured it was sort of a given.. with the price point for what’s on offer and all…my apologies

Ive read all of your hating comments though.

Are you a competitor or just plain jealous, as you deem yourself the watch expert and this hurts your ego?

        • You're right & you caught me out. I actually don't know anything about watches. I just saw the username was available so I grabbed it.

I will delete all my hating comments, please let me know if I missed any?

Maybe it's just me, but the "32.768Hz" on the face sort of cheapens the look. It's the sort of thing some knockoff business would do. Why not have your company logo there instead? I know you have it on the back, but no one would be able to see it.

    • +1

Most quartz crystals used in watches are tuned to 32,768Hz. I don't know what's so special about it that it is imprinted on the dial.

    • Interesting to be know and agree i wouldn't bother putting it on the face either unless it was a special high-beat like 262kHz or something (like the Bulova).

However a lot of watches have 'automatic' on them and they are nothing special (just a 30$ movement)

    • The designer wanted to celebrate the quartz movement. That's their design philosophy, and based on the fact I've not seen it before, a reasonable USP.

Is it brave to launch this? Yes, but fortune favours the brave!

  • Is the second hands a tick or a sweep? I'm assuming the former. Please share a video.

  • This is really exciting, I hope your watch foray does well!

If I'm honest, the watch doesn't suit my preferences in terms of looks, but specs and everything else is very exciting.

If you release any other watches in the future and are offering deals, please share them :)

    • Thank you! I really appreciate your support - for sure I will do in the future!
