790

Hi OzBargain!

My name is Matt, and through starting a small personal project to build myself a watch, have ended up founding Hz Watches - Australia's newest watch microbrand. I'm a long-time lurker here, and thanks to this site I've been able to jump onto a range of good deals, especially flights and watches.

Speaking as a watch collector and not a brand owner - I do objectively believe that the HZ.01 launch deal offers very good value for money! I'll leave that up to you all to decide, but I will make myself available in the comments below if you have any questions!

Production is currently underway, and deliveries are on track to begin in early April.

Country of manufacture? Doesn't seem to list it anywhere on your website.

    • -6

CHINA MATE! where else would you expect a "custom" dropshipped watch from?

      • +18

Hi Wiadro - thanks for taking the time to comment!

Yes - we do manufacture some parts of the watch in China

Yes - the watch is "custom" as it is our original design, and we have completed everything ourselves, from the initial design drawings, technical drawings, CAD, 3D printing cases to ensure we found the most perfect fit, 3D modelling, and even the final assembly of the production samples was done in my bedroom!

No - not dropshipped at all! We are the only place in the world where you can buy our designs - however we may branch out to retail stores or other watch stores in future! All watches are shipped from Melbourne, and are personally checked, and packed by myself.

Happy to answer any questions you may have!

        • +2

which parts are not made in china?

          which parts are australian made?

was this mostly assembled in china?

          • +6

@Hugh G Rection: Hey Hugh, thanks for your question! Copying and pasting a previous reply here so you can view the original reply!

I trialled a range of factories across many different locations, to find factories that were the best balance of quality, and value for money. Our movements are manufactured in Switzerland, our titanium cases are machined in ShenZhen, our dials are manufactured in Hong Kong, and our hands are manufactured in ShenZhen. After all of this, our watches are assembled and inspected in HK, before going through final testing in Australia before being shipped from Melbourne.

          • +3

@Hugh G Rection: Looks like just the movement is Swiss made and everything else is made in China.

            • +5

@CocaKoala: Think about what you just said. Do you really think this has a Swiss made movement plus all the other specs for $249.

Rep says it's manufactured in Switzerland but it's all a play on words, like the whole industry.

              • +1

@WatchNerd: You're making a good point! I must admit I know very little about the watch industry.

              • +1

@WatchNerd: He is correct - this does have a swiss made movement, and all of the other specs for $249!

The movement is a Ronda 507 with day/date function, and we order them directly from Ronda themselves, who build them in Switzerland. These are then delivered directly to our factory, where we assemble them in our cases!

                • +4

@Hz Watches: As I said it's all a play on words. Just because it says Swiss made doesn't mean it's entirely made in Switzerland.

                  • @WatchNerd: Yes - there are many different definitions within the watch industry, however the one relevant here is in relation to the Swiss Made Movement.

To be regarded as a Swiss movement, the movement must:

                    • have undergone technical development in Switzerland:
                    • for exclusively mechanical movements, at least mechanical construction and prototyping of the movement as a whole,
                    • for movements that are not exclusively mechanical, at least mechanical construction and prototyping of the movement as a whole, together with the conception of the printed circuit or circuits, conception of the display and conception of the software; have been assembled in Switzerland; have been inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland and at least 60% of the manufacturing costs must be generated in Switzerland and at least 50% of the value of all the constituent parts, but excluding the cost of assembly, must be of Swiss manufacture.

Our Ronda 507 movements meet this definition of being a Swiss Made Movement - as they come directly from Ronda themselves, and fulfill all of the above criteria, which the watch industry uses to define Swiss Made Movements.

                    • +5

@Hz Watches: Yep exactly, nobody ever says this watch has a movement with 50% parts from China.

Not having a go at you, just letting the community know how messed up it all is. Once you start talking in percentages then who keeps track of it. Is there some Swiss guy from the government walking around all the warehouses haha.

                      • +2

@WatchNerd: Oh for sure, and definitely didnt take it as you having a go at me - I can talk about watches all day, apologies if it came across that way! I've been in the watch industry for over 5 years, and there can be a lot of smoke and mirrors - which is why I believe in transparency - yes the watch is made from parts manufactured in China. Can I tell the difference between swiss titanium and chinese titanium? Nope - but my wallet can!

              • -1

@WatchNerd: I remember the recent fugu deal you posted. $299 for a Japanese made automatic with sapphire crystal lens (I know the case isn't titanium).

I my opinion this quartz watch doesn't look like good value in comparison.

          • +1

@Hugh G Rection: Do you interrogate all of your watch purchases like this, it's as given these days almost and certainly for AliExpress watches. Good to show an interest.

    • +28

Great question - I'll look to update that on the website now. Please let me know if you have any more questions I can help with - I believe in full transparency, but with a new website we may not have been able to cover off on all bases completely yet!

      • +12

Thank you for the transparency and with a very detailed and precise answer. More sellers should just be direct like this as it really speaks to how authentic they are being with their customers.
For whoever downvoted me for a fairly major question when making a purchase such as this, why did you downvote?

      • man I used to think titanium was somewhat expensive, i guess not

        • Now you get ta sava da marney!

  • +17

All the best for the launch Matt.
Checked out Peter's review the other day, well done!

For anyone interested, Peter Kosta (highly regarded in this space) did a great job at reviewing a sample recently.
    https://youtu.be/h-qUKgkjFP4?si=ijEOfDoCiEsy4_l6

I'm in no way affiliated nor know Matt, just a spectator giving a fellow Aussie a pat on the back, he's done a fantastic job in designing this piece.

This is NOT a drop ship, please research before dropping useless unfounded comments.

    • Thank you! Appreciate your support - Peter is one of the best in the business, and always does a great job of telling it how it is, both the highlights and the flaws/areas for improvement! Very happy to also talk about what I believe could also be improved in the watch as well - but on the balance of things I still believe it offers very good value, which is where I am trying to position Hz in the future, so we're always in the conversation when it comes to affordable watches!

      • In the video review there is no lume on the indices but the photo on your website looks like that changed. Is that accurate?

    • +5

Feel free to share a link…..

    • +11

Hi mopo - thanks for taking the time to view and comment! AliExpress do offer a range of many affordable watches, some with original designs, and some that are homages. Whilst I'm not disputing that you may be able to find value on AliExpress, one thing you wont find there is our brand, and our watches or designs - this has been longer than a 2 year process to get to the launch. Please let me know if you have any questions that I can assist with!

  • +2

    Was $349

    When?

    • Apologies - more accurately will be $349 permanently after the 48 hour launch event ends!

      • +9

Yeah that's misleading because as you said in the description -

Production is currently underway, and deliveries are on track to begin in early April.

In other words it was never $349 because they haven't been made yet.

    • +5

I've now edited the title to hopefully better reflect it - apologies, that one is on me, I was viewing the Title Guide when writing the title which suggested the Now $X, Was $X, and I didnt think twice!

      • Is it $249 delivered or is there a shipping charge?

        • Shipping is calculated at checkout based on location - however for all Australian customers, shipping is a flat rate of $10 regardless of the number of watches purchased!

          • +1

@Hz Watches: You need to mention that in the title. Read point 5 here.

            • +4

@WatchNerd: Updated! New here so still learning, must have missed that point when posting. Thanks for educating me and making sure the post stays compliant!

  • +5

The design doesn’t speak to me but at least the price is reasonable

    • Thanks for taking the time to take a look! Glad to hear that the price is reasonable - one of the pillars of the brand is being able to deliver value for money.

  • -2

like the design, but a quartz movement for $249? nah. at least a 9015 or NH35 or even a PT5000 will sell to me

    • +2

Thanks for the comment! The quartz movement was chosen specifically for this piece to:

      1. Take advantage of the synergy between titanium, and lighter quartz movements - enabling us to create a watch that only weighs 45g in total!
      2. Lean into the grab and go theme of the watch, for those who want a watch that they dont need to wind, set, or worry about damaging the movement due to shock! For example, I wouldnt wear any of my automatics if I were to go play golf - but I wouldnt need to hesistate with this watch!

For $249 - outside of AliExpress homages, I do believe it is pretty hard to find something with an original design, that is titanium, has a sapphire crystal, and a swiss quartz movement!

I love the miyota 9000s but they are quite commonly pushing 4 figures in micobrand territory (and fairly so - the baltic hermetique for example). I'm very familiar with the NH35, as I used to build SKX mods - however I feel that this movement is overused in microbrands, I wanted to differentiate, rather than offer another new microbrand NH35 diver (no shade at those microbrands who do - as it is what the market demands, but my philosophy was to build and design what I wanted to!)

Always happy to answer any questions about the watch, or chat about any other watches!

    • -1

A 9 series Miyota with Sapphire crystal, titanium case for $249AUD? Where do I get that from homie?

Ronda Swiss Quartz dude, big difference.

That'd make a GS Quartz a rip too?

    • +1

Quartz keeps better time but obviously the money has been spread over the entire watch, so the movement is just one consideration.

  • +2

All the best with your launch! It's good to see that the microbrands scene in Australia is steadily growing. Keen to see the other offerings you may release in the future!

    • Thank you - I appreciate your support!

  • +4

Good on you for giving it a crack mate. It's a very legible watch. I'm into auto divers personally, but recently bought a quartz for a grab and go, so I appreciate your design. People will hate on the quartz, but anything under 10mm is hard to achieve with an auto unless you have a big pile of cash.

    • +1

Thankyou! For sure, I have more than my fair share of mechanical watches, but the simplicity of quartz has helped refresh my views on watch collecting! I used to work in a luxury boutique focused on high end mechanical watches (Rolex, AP, Patek) - so the snobbery against quartz was almost inbuilt into the sales conversation. This was probably something I carried with me until I started to realise that with such a large watch collection, I was failing to wind, set, and even wear many of my mechanical watches. With quartz I've been able to find myself wearing a watch on days that I might not have popped a watch on, and im finding myself back into the depths of watch collecting which has been super fun for me (less so for my wallet)

  • Not for me but good luck to you. I'm impressed that you chose to start a brand and release a unique design for your first watch. Will bookmark for the future.

    • Thankyou, I appreciate your kind words and your support!

  • I just bought an apple watch, which already took much convincing to the boss. Don't think I'd be able to get her to sign off on another watch. They look mint though mate. Will definitely keep an eye out in the future though!

    • +3

Don't think I'd be able to get her to sign off on another watch.

Tell her we said it looked good on you

Besides it don’t ship till April, it can be a future you problem 👍

    • Thank you! Definitely understand that feeling - hopefully we can get one out to you in future!

  • What is the story with 32,768Hz on the watchface?

    • +2

      Quartz clock frequency

      • More specifically, it's one of the more common crystal frequencies for digital clocks. 32768 = 2^15 = hex 8000. Which is a nice number for computers to deal with.

        • Spot on!

    • I found the answer on the website.

    • It is how fast the quartz crystal oscilator vibrates.

      • never knew there were moving parts like that in a quartz. learn something everyday!

  • Love what you're doing and can see it is reasonably priced. I admit I would pay that $100 more to see it produced in Australia instead.

Unfortunately I'm not not a fan of watch face (I think its missing something, maybe more colour) but I look forward to seeing what you do in the future!

    • +2

I dont know of any watches produced in Australia? I'm sure that adds a lot more than $100 to the cost

      • Nicholas Hacko watches are made in Australia. Although they cost closer to 4k to 10k mark.

      • You're right, Im sure it would add more than $100

I should have said "I would pay more to see it produced in Australia"

    • -1

      Loser logic,
Literally nothing is made in Australia.
Imagine taking this sort of mentality to anything, vehicles, appliances, phones, lmao.

    • +7

Thank you! Unfortunately we dont have the infrastructure (watch factories) or experience (lack of watchmakers) here to do it at a price that makes sense unfortunately, but if we do get big enough, moving assembly within Australia may be an option, to assist with the quality control! I hand assembled the pictured production samples on my desk, after years of practice building custom Seiko mods, but unfortunately it was not feasible to assemble all of them myself (for both timing reasons and sanity reasons haha)

  • If I didn't have a silver face Eco Drive Super Titanium, I'd be onto this. Great job.

    • Thank you! Those Solar movements are great value - currently testing a few solar prototypes and designs which is exciting!

  • +2

Not within my budget but I do like the designs and good on you for having a go.
Many will lament the loss of manufacturing to China, but few try to adapt and use it to their advantage with their own ideas.

    • Thank you!

  • Really cool looking watches at a reasonable price!

    • Thankyou!

    • +1

How about you post your last tax return on here before we ask this?

    • +6

I don't think that's a suitable question to ask. There is a difference between transparency and interrogative information requests.

Especially for a new brand/company. Profit margin on a product may be one thing, but are you factoring in opportunity cost of getting the brand/business up and running? What about overhead costs ie. Internet, electricity, rent, etc.?

I'll bet you don't expect that many brands, especially low volume item sellers, have 150%-1000% profit margins on products, but the overall business is barely breaking even.

Pretty rude to ask this TBH especially seeing the way OP has responded very well to reasonable requests for further information. I hope you come to your senses and unpublish this comment.

      • -5

I disagree, look at Companies like OnePlus where their CEO came out with the bill of materials and margins. Then did the same for his Nothing Phones. It's good to know if the margins are slim or very high.

        • They aren't niche Australian small businesses though

    • +10

I believe most users here wouldnt expect that a reply to this is warranted, but as stated in the interests of transparency, I'll share what I can and use this as an opportunity for education about the watch industry (Based on my experiences having worked with watches over the past 5 years, having collected watches for over 10 years, and now starting a microbrand).

Based on the quality of the watch, the heritage of the brand, the number of units being produced, as well as the distribution method (direct B2C, or through a distributor/retailer/middleman B2B) - you can expect different profit margins. I wont speak directly about any specific brands or profit margins - but for example, we might expect in some cases (but not all) that:

      • Newer brands have lower margins than more established brands, in the interests of being able to move stock faster and not having to hold onto large amounts of capital held up in stock which can be illiquid.

      • Brands distributing through B2B will have a lower profit margin than going direct B2C, but the cost to the consumer is probably greater in most B2B2C operating models, as the distributor/retailer also requires a profit margin.

      • With economies of scale, brands that have the ability to produce more units will be able to drive down production costs, which may create greater profit margins.

Profit margins also only look at production cost versus sale price, and fail to capture the overheads that are incurred when starting up and maintaining a business - which in this industry can be significant! Without giving away too many of my actuals - I have invested over 2 years into the design, testing, manufacturing, and marketing of the HZ.01, which has come at a financial cost around the high 5-figure range (not including my personal labour).

Machining titanium is not cheap, especially when compared to stainless steel - which is why you wont see many microbrands with similar offerings around the $250 mark - but this is something I am set on offering, at the cost of having to set profit margins that are far lower than the industry average.

      Why is this the case?

Revisiting the above assumptions, I am hoping to use this affordable value proposition to ensure that I can move stock quickly, hopefully assisting me in building more reputation and a brand name as our watches get released out into the world! Through providing a very good value proposition, I'm hoping to increase demand - which will enable me to ramp up production and decrease my production costs over time.

Like most microbrand owners, I probably wont stand to make too much on this release, however what it does is set the foundations for future success of the business as I build up trust and reputation from the community, and hopefully repeat customers!

Happy to chat if you have any further questions!

      Cheers,

      Matt

      • Great answer! And also the margins are slim given you're trying to undercut other premium watch companies but maintain quality?

        • +3

For sure! No plans either to steadily raise prices of each launch as we built reputation - I always want Hz Watches to be accessible and obtainable easily, and as such we'll keep on putting out super competitive prices, as over time I am expecting that we can match current microbrands through doing more volume, with lower markups than the industry average!

  • That's a good looking watch from pictures and video review.

Personally I think price is pretty spot on with the materials and design, movement not so much but you've been transparent and explained all the design decisions which made them logical. Numbers are kept simple and legible with the only small nit pick on the number date window.

It pains me to have to skip this one for now as I would love to support a fellow Aussie in the watch game, but I'm funding something else :( but you're definitely pinned to favourite hopefully can come around another day.

Wish you all the best with your launch.

P/s please post this on Australian Affordable Watch Forums, I think it could be a hit there.

    • Thank you for your kind words and support! Definitely the date window would be something I would go back and revisit if I had the chance - but its great to see that there are always improvement opportunities, which greatly helps with future designs as we press ahead!

If the first release was a perfect watch - then it would be great! (But also a sad day for us, as it only means that we can go downhill from here).

Some photos of the HZ.01 may have surfaced on AAWF and AWF over the past few weeks - but the promotion rules are stricter there, and any posts I make will be removed for self-promotion, which is why I unfortunately havent been able to share it there as much as I would have liked! But I'm hoping that during the launch tomorrow some people might jump on and post it up on the forums, which would go a long way to supporting this small business!

Thanks again for your support - and hopefully we can get something out to you sometime soon!

  • -1

Congrats on the launch mate. Great to see a new brand making high quality quartz watches. It is an underserved space and I’m happy to see an Aussie brand filling it. Love the style and little branding on the dial.

    • Thank you! Appreciate your kind words and support - glad to be that Aussie brand making some headway in this space! Big things planned for 2024, where I might end up touring America to put an Aussie brand on the map at Windup Watch Fair!

  • Looks pretty nice. Wish I could justify another watch - I already have a Citizen Eco-Drive that I've owned since 2005 and a Casio Solar I got in the last couple of years.

    • Thank you! Solar watches are fantastic technology, something I'm hoping to explore in future so hopefully I'll be able to tempt you then haha! Thank you for taking the time to learn about the HZ.01, and I appreciate your support!

  • +1

Price seems good for Ronda + AR sapphire + machined titanium + superluminova.

    • Thankyou! That's where we want to be- making a name for ourselves in the affordable price bracket so that we come up in any affordable watch conversation!

  • Watch looks great. Not a quartz fan myself, but that's no criticism. Good luck with it, it's a distinctive design and that's impressive.

    • Thank you, appreciate your kind words!

  • While this watch isn't for me style-wise, I am so psyched to see a local lad producing good quality, good value watches. Your responses to the comments here (even the absolutely braindead ones that nobody expected you to respond to) have really impressed me. As a moderate watch nerd I cannot overstate how much I hope you succeed - I feel your passion. Good luck and I'll have my eye out for the HZ.02!

    • +1

Thank you! I believe that one of the benefits that microbrands have over the larger competitors is the ability to engage with our supporters on a much more personal level - and that fact has been driving the success of this launch (and even the design period), where I've been able to engage with the community, and receive fantastic support! Thanks for your support and can't wait to get some more of my designs out into the world - some exciting stuff to come in future!

  • Any chance in swapping strap colours? I prefer the green dial brown strap on the blue dial

    • +1

For sure! Whilst I havent offered this as an option due to logistical reasons - please reach out to me at [email protected] with your order number and I'll personally see that the strap is matched to the colour of your choice!

      • Great! I'm a big fan of blue-faced watches, and was instantly sold on the blue lum lol

For me the blue you chose for the dial is the perfect shade of blue and will go nicely with a classic brown strap.

Will order later today and shoot you an email

  • Honestly I'm very happy with this watch it's clean with a nice day date function.
And in all fairness quartz is better at this range than autos.
I have 48 hrs to decide at that price correct?
    I'm seriously considering.

    • +1

Thank you! Yes thats correct - one thing as a watch collector I wasnt a fan of with many of these releases was being frozen out of buying due to bots and resellers, or not having enough time to decide as it was gone in 30 seconds! As such, the 48 hour window period offers all customers the guarantee of a HZ.01, delivered at the launch price - no supply and demand games! If people want to wear my designs, thats fantastic, and I'll do everything in my power to make sure that they can!

      • -1

I really want to get it but I think I'm finding the numerals font to be the glaring point of contention.. I know it's trivial.. I want to buy it but I feel like it might bother me every time I look at it. If you can do a custom dial with even Roman numerals, or straight indices I would buy it instantly. If it's something you can do hit me up a DM and let me know the price difference. I really feel like in general it's a very nice and sleek watch.. it's just the font style of the numbers it will bug me…

  • Good luck with the launch, when you do a bigger face one post it here, and I will be a customer.

    • Thank you! The support from the community has been great here - I'll definitely be sharing future releases here!
