  • I have the beryl as a separate modem for the kids, using open dns. Works well

    • +1

What advantages does that give you?

      • +5

I imagine that having them using OpenDNS is the key element. That would allow OpenDNS to filter accessible sites (Adult, Alcohol, Drugs, Sex etc) for those clients that use it.

Then the main router can use a different DNS which allows for unfiltered access.

        • That's interesting, thanks for the insight and use case.

        • Correct!

Separate wifi network = parents can use their internet as usual.

Kids devices can be routed through their own wifi network —> OpenDNS.
          'Bad' content filtered.

Also, when travelling, I can take the Beryl with me and hook it up to the hotel network.
= kids network will still be routed through OpenDNS, and wifi SSID as well.

I could not get 'one' wifi router to do all this, so settled with an additional Beryl unit (main unit is TP Link deco)

          • @dangerdanger: UniFi gear will do this, but it’s heaps cheaper just to get one of these!

  • I have a slate plus. Great little router. I had grand plans to turn it into a dual-wan VPN load balancer to replace my tp-link ER605 which does not do wireguard, but I could not make it work that way due to the way these routers access have some sort of virtual switch tied to the CPU.

    Highly recommend these regardless.

I use the Beryl as a Travel Router; supports VLANs, Wireguard & ControlD so I can still remote back home when travelling, and can act as a backup router when I'm not. Only wish I could run pfSense on it instead ;-)

    • Does it have a SIM card slot? Or do have to use public wifi?

      • +1

None of these models have sim slot. You can attached to public wifi or hotspot or tether your mobile phone or connect a dongle though.

        • Thanks! Yea dongle it is

          • +1

@starbearer: USB your phone and it works, I’ve done it with an iPhone.

  • Do all of these run OpenWRT? Thinking of getting the Beryl AX for a trip to Japan, and that one seems like the best offerings for the buck, maybe 🤔

Edit: what I meant to say was, do these all OpenWRT, and can you upgrade them to newer versions easily?

  • Shame the GL-AXT1800 slate appears to only come with an AU plug considering it requires 5V/4A

    • Only needs 4A if your pushing it and running say a hard drive off the back. I've been running one with 5v/3A at home with a sd card 'media server" and never had an issue (luckily since I can't find the 4A charger that came with it… 😜)

When I'm travelling normally use a multiport GAN charger to reduce the amount of chargers I take that will do the family's notebooks, tablets, phones, router, headphones etc

  • Has any one used any of these as a home Wifi router?
