What to Do in Hong Kong over Chinese New Year?

My friend may go to Hong Kong tomorrow for 5 days and doesn't know what to do there for fun.

My friend likes:

  • Sailing
  • Automotive/War/Technology museums
  • Rides
  • Hiking
  • Gardens
  • Temples
  • Martial arts
  • Free/Cheap public transport
  • Barbecue
  • Fireworks

My friend doesn't like:

  • Wasting money
  • Wasting time
  • Waiting in line
  • Big crowds
  • Tofu

Thanks.

Bad time of the year be in Hong Kong without local Friends and Family there, most shop are closed until Tuesday.

    People normally visiting each others.

    May be cinema is open.

I think your friend should try the following.

    • Automotive/War/Technology museums
    • Rides
    • Hiking
    • Gardens
    • Temples
    • Martial arts
    • Free/Cheap public transport
    • Barbecue
    • Fireworks

I think your friend should avoid doing the following

    • Waiting in line
    • Big crowds
    • Tofu

You sure are invested in your ‘friend’ a lot.

This is like going to the UK at Christmas with zero planning. Everything is going to be closed.

    Automotive/War/Technology museums

Museum of Costal Defense. If it's open. Which it probably isn't.

    Hiking

    Rides

    WTF are 'rides'?

After the shambolic 'racism' thread, I don't know if this thread is serious or just trolling. Who on earth suddenly decides they 'might' go to HK literally on CNY…

    • Clearly likes to waste money..

    • After the shambolic 'racism' thread,

My mistake, turns out there are 2 almost identically named accounts. But this thread is still a headscratcher.

    • Which thread?

      • The "people ask where I am from, do you find this racist" one. It's one of those brain-hurting threads.

HK surprisingly has a lot of hiking trails including on the main island. Easy to find details. There are a few temples, not that many but enough. PT is cheap so plenty of options, just catch the MTR or buses or trams to your hearts content. Sailing is expensive unless you belong to a club (which is expensive but there are some reciprocal arrangements).

Hike across the Dragonsback trail then look at the water, visit the Tin Hau Temple (it’s tiny), have a BBQ at Shek O, visit the Museum of Coastal Defence and then catch a bus home

  • McDonald's would be open.

True. But on the other hand, HK McD's are some of the most mediocre in the world.

Tells us more about what your friend doesn't like as this friend seems like such a fun individual with very interesting dislikes.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall while your friend is waiting in line 😂

I was in HK for CNY about 20 years ago. From memory about 350k people lined the shores to watch the fireworks.

Prob not an ideal place to be if you don't like crowds.
