Looking for a BYOD Device for a Year 3 Student

Looking for a BYOD device for a year 3 student.

At the moment looking at a galaxy tab A9+ 128gb

Or a surface laptop Pro 6 refurbished from aussiecomputertraders.com.au

With the galaxy tab I would need to buy a keyboard and mouse.

The only requirements the school has stated is, needs a mouse and keyboard, needs to be able to connect to wifi preferably 2.4, battery last 5 hours and 2.4 and 5ghz bands and needs atleast 4gb of ram, I would prefer 8gb.

Which one of the two would be preferable or what other options would you suggest?

I'd suggest laptop, as you get more flexibility in terms of apps available to install versus an Android tablet. Also can't lose the KB+M since they're attached.

Christ, for year 3? Daughter started high school this year and their BYOD is “optional” and literally none of the students have a device they take to school.

Is this a private school thing or something? When the daughter was in primary, they were all given school iPads to use when ever they needed to use the internet/needed to do tech.

    • Nope a public school in the hunter region. Luckily not my child yet but my niece.I know ill be going through the same thing soon enough though.

      • I am literally in the Hunter region and I work part time in some of the schools already the area (volunteer and paid work) and none of them require yr3 (stage 2) kids to have their own iPads or laptops.

I would check with the school, as it just doesn’t sound right for yr3 kids to be hauling up to $1000 devices to school.

Private schools I can understand, but yr3 public?

        • Will hit up the parents, but her class already had a bring your device for setup day. They would of already got a device but we are all on holidays at the moment.

  • Hard to believe the school requires a device, but does not care if it is Android, IOS, or Windows etc.

Primary schools normally use Ipad or Android, possibly ChromeOS.

"surface pro 6" is not the same as "surface laptop" BTW. And not suitable for year 3. Save it for high school.

    • Yeah i though it was weird as well but thats what the requirements are apprently. Only reason i even hesitate on getting a tablet for it is that obviously tablets are more closed ecosystems compared to a traditional windows machine.

Luckily not my child so i can see how they go with this choice and change my options at a later stage for my own children.

      • Another option is a chromebook 2-in-1.
That gives a full desktop browser, so plugins like adblock work.
But you can also get one with Android emulator, runs lots of apps too.

          Another option is a chromebook

          Not really.

  • I had to get a laptop last year for my 9 year old and after doing alot of reasarch went with a refurbished one
They don't sell the exact model I got but the link below is very similar. Except it was Windows 11 and I think the storage was less but I only paid $499

Can't fault this laptop, can be a bit clunky as a tablet but still very handy to have the versatility. The condition was excellent aswell, looked brand new and the screen looks amazing.

I wouldn't be buying anything too expensive and something like this will get them through until high school.
Laptops just have more functionality compared to tablets and ipads. You also get better value for money.

Two kids in high school here.
When they get to high school, my advice is to get whatever the school has set up with a supplier. Yes, you’ll do better for cheaper with a refurb or by hitting up lenovo deals etc, but when things go wrong, the school will have on site support ready. I had weird network driver issues on the first BYOD laptop we bought for the oldest, which didn’t work well with the school wireless. Pain. In. The. Arse. Replaced it with when the youngest got to year 7 with the stock offering. (There’s usually different spec’d devices, but likely the cheapest will be fine. They all use stuff like google docs / browser based apps anyway)

Get the insurance, they will drop them. The screen will crack. They’ll lose the digital pens that sit in the slots. Get the insurance.

Get them a laptop satchel/ bag with a shoulder strap. They drop them when getting stuff out of their lockers, so having a shoulder strap reduces the number of times you need to hit the insurance hotline.

Until then, for primary school, get whatever cheap device you want. iPad with a keyboard, refurb laptop, whatever. But factor in getting something more permanent in yr 7.

    • Solid idea, i might tell them to get the tablet for now then and they can upgrade when its required at high school.
