Switching Back to Telstra. Is It Worth Signing up via JB/Good Guys for Gift Card?

Hi All,

I recently transferred to Vodafone because I wanted to check out the overseas compatability but quite frankly the product in Australia is absolutely shocking.

Multiple drop outs, spotty reception even in inner suburbs and no reception at all when going on a road trip.

I've decided I want to swap back to the Telstra network as it's quite easy to obtain E-Sims when travelling now.

Would you recommend one of the gift card sign up bonuses i.e. JB Hi Fi

JB Hi Fi is $600 gift card for a $69 per month plan which is 120GB a month data (not concerned as tapped into wifi mostly)

Good Gyys is $69 per month, $600 gift card for 120GB a month data,

So the same value really.

Do they ever increase the gift card amounts on offer?

Am I better off waiting to switch?

How much data do you need? Boost is essentially telstra at a much cheaper price point.

There has been plenty of boost sim cards where you can make profit from via cashback. Just wait for one of these to come back

Otherwise they also have 365 deals too.

You pay for the gift card over the contract term. You are locking yourself into $69 mth for 24 months.

$69 mth for a mobile plan is expensive.

not really, not after you get a gift card and claim a percentage of your monthly bill at tax time (depending on your tax rate and usage)

No it really is, even if you were earning over $180k per year and claiming 100% usage on tax you would still pay $310.80 for 24 months after deducting the voucher amount. Compared to buying two of the Boost 12 month sims for only $205.70 after the tax deduction.

        • you can't get 120GB a month on boost for $300

@redfox1200: OP said they aren't concerned about data allowance as they mostly use wifi.

Except in circumstances where your work "reimburses" you for most if not all of the plan cost, then you buy stuff with the gift card that is 100% tax deductible (home office stuff etc).

          Then it's free money.

      • Get a cheaper monthly plan and still claim it on tax?

Put the extra $30 a month you would otherwise be paying in order to get your gift card up front into a high interest savings account for 24 months = profit.

    • where else can you get 120GB per month for less on telstra?

      • +1

OP doesn't need 120GB per month.

if you can claim phone bill as work expenses, then the higher bill could actually work out in you favor after tax. Otherwise just go with one of the reseller of Telstra.

I used to be on Telstra but have been using Woolies mobile for the last year and haven't noticed any difference.

    • same here, also with the 10% off groceries, it's pretty good value. No issue with service/reception

  • has anyone been able to get port-in credit recently?
