So the f1 season is about to kick off again, previously I've just used Kayo at $25 per month but looking to see if there are any deals, or any other ways to watch it live. Thanks!

Sometimes channel Ten do a 30 minutes highlight the next evening.
Would VPN to another region + F1 tv work? Otherwise… its Kayo I guess!

UK does not have F1 TV live races. India is one of the cheapest countries to get it if you want to use a VPN.
Is the VPN required when watching the races or simply for the signing up and payment process?
People in EU countries where F1 TV live is available report it's only needed for signup. But for countries where the Live service is not available (like Australia, UK, Netherlands) they have been saying they need to use VPN all the time.
They've also been know to actively ban/block VPN providers and accounts that use them (so best to not pay for a year up front if possible incase they catch/ban you and you lose what you paid for)
Best way to watch F1 live
Go to Albert Park during the race.
Go to your local watering hole and ask them to put it on

Kayo/Foxtel has a monopoly on legal access here (except Melbourne race which is on Ch 10 too).
F1 TV does not show live races here.
You're only other alternative optons are IPTV subscriptions that include F1 channels (grey area) or illegal third party streams online which I'm sure we cannot discuss here.
