Map App with Fixed Path

Often when I need to go for a drive I map out a path with google maps that includes detours to things I might find interesting - lookouts, a dirt road rather than the default highway, etc. While driving google loves to update with the "best" path available but I'm not interested in that, I want to get there in my own time and use the path I set. To get around this I can set various stops in the middle of a "non-optimised" section but this doesn't always work (need too many stops, might make a little detour and it adjusts, etc.). Google maps allows 10 stops which is often fine, and I can break the trip into smaller sections to suit, but if I'm in the sticks without coverage I can't load the next section.

Can you suggest some android mapping app that will obey a fixed path? (Or is this already available in google maps?) Free preferred but will pay for a good alternative.

Bonus points: the maps traces the actual path traveled and superimposes it on the map. Sometimes I might run into an obstacle (gate on a fire trail, big patch of mud I'm not ready for, etc.) and it would be handy to have a record of where I've already been when making decisions on how to get around it.

    maybe this?

definitely lets you record and show tracks

    • Ta. Not the best reviews but I'll give it a go.

      • usability is not the best

    • Organic Maps is better

  • Just set Google Maps with the route and don't 'Start' the navigation?

Then use perhaps an exercise app like Strava and record an activity there?

Sometimes all your niche needs don't exist in one app but individual apps would do the trick.

    • Just set Google Maps with the route and don't 'Start' the navigation?

Yes I have done that sometimes but it's nice to have turn by turn directions on windy unsealed roads - good to know what's upcoming, can gun it a bit harder in between.

  • but if I'm in the sticks without coverage I can't load the next section.

You can save an area from Google Maps to your phone or tablet and use it when you're offline.

    • Yes but nav paths can't be stored AFAIK

      • Yes, it’s a partial solution. If you want to do multiple short trips like in the description, you can route without mobile phone coverage

  • This is another option to go with offline maps. Save the route and have it accessible when there’s no mobile coverage

If you want to save a frequent trip, you can pin it. By default, the Go tab suggests several addresses to pin. These addresses come from your search history or your Location History. Learn about directions and places from your history.

If you pin a favorite trip, it shows up at the bottom of your screen when you tap the Go tab. You can pin a trip from a directions search or from the suggestions in the Go tab.

    • Do this (get offline maps) then turn off mobile data to Google Maps.
If maps doesn’t get traffic updates, then it shouldn’t re-route.
