What Do You Keep in Your Car?

Just interested in what useful (operate word there) things that people have in their car at all times. These could be comforts or tools or anything that lives in your car for emergencies or day to day.

I have:

  • fully stocked first aid kit
  • jumper cables, and starter battery
  • cables for charging peoples phones
  • sunscreen
  • sunnies
  • hat
  • umbrellas

What else is useful to have lying around?

My keys, they rarely leave my car. When I go shopping, or at work, when I'm home they are always in my car. I have been doing this for the past 10+yrs.

    • Yeah I wouldn't leave your keys in the car. That's just saying 'rob me'.

Modern cars these days won't even let you accidentally lock the car keys in the car these days as it'll just scream when you attempt to do so.

      • +1

The worst part isn't being robbed, it is having insurance refuse your claim as keys were left in the car.

  • Umbrellas.
    Picnic blanket.
House keys of various family members.
    Snake bite bandages.
    USB charging cables.
    Cheap 150W power inverter.

  • It varies depending on the car. But the family car has the same list as yours though the phone charger is a sometimes item. I also carry some rope, ratchet straps, zip ties, gloves, small tarp(dont want to get dirty changing a tire in wet weather), fuses and wet wipes.

  • bit of cash to pay for stuff in case phone dies. pencil and pad in case phone dies, pens dry out and never work when needed. breathalyser.

"Just in case" is basically my philosophy in life so in my car (2004 Corolla):

    Glove box

  • something others havent mentioned
tyre plug kit and co2 refills

I have 2 different pairs of sunnies, one that is light brown for dusk/dawn and one yellow set for rain/fog. Orange lenses also work. These are amazing for use on highway with all the spray. Light rain and drizzle is mostly clear. I dont bother using them in suburbia, not enough speed

The only other unsual thing is an OBD cable, tennis racquets and a basket ball

had a 2 ft xmas tree in the boot stored in one of my cars

    • If you haven't heard this song…have a listen. The Lonley Island featuring Chester Bennington (RIP).

Id have to agree with Nas on this one:
"I didn't really relate to that song
because, you know, I had different things
in my Jeep than he had in his Jeep."

    • +2

Surprised it took this long for that song to be posted. First thing I thought of when reading the OP 😂

  • bic lighter, tactical knife and tyre puncture repair kit

  • Gas lighter.

    Emergency glass breaker.

    Err … toilet paper …

  • i always carry a cordless rattle gun with socket, nothing worse than getting a flat & can't get the wheel off because they have been overtightend with a rattle gun!

  • A spare tyre filled with copious amount of air(it's free anyway).

A clean empty juice bottle preferably those with larger(every man's wish) opening so it fits me and also the servo petrol filler.

2L drinking water double as coolant top off in case my plastic coolant pump explodes. Plus those plastic coolant hose fittings.

    Large umbrella for 3 person.
    Small umbrella.

An instant plastic rose to make up with the other half. Doesn't work all the time but worth a try if you are desperate.
Unexpired condom x2 just in case you know…

  • Pack of eco-friendly disposable wooden spoons for those times that you pick up some food on the go and then realise you don't have anything to eat it with (or forgot to grab the free non eco-friendly plastic spoon at the checkout).

  • jumper leads
    4L water
    4L oil
    insect repellant
    sunscreen
    hat
    towel
    tennis balls
    sanitiser
    umbrella
    usb-phone charging cable
    excess takeaway serviettes,
    takeaway chopsticks

  • Water bottle
    Sunscreen
    Hand sanitiser
    Umbrella
    Wooly bags

  • I have a toolbox with the following.

    . Container of fuses
    . Spare high beam lamp
    . Basic tools
    . Toilet roll
    . Tissues
    . Jumper cables
    . Rope
    . Tarp or picnic blanket
    . Wet wipes
    . 2 500ml bottles of water ( I refresh them after a while)

  • …. + 2 pillows

  • fully stocked first aid kit
    jumper cables, and starter battery
    cables for charging peoples phones
    sunscreen
    sunnies
    hat
    umbrellas

Apart from most of these I keep, fire extinguisher, a small toolbox, vomit bags and couple of drink bottles.

Hand saw in the toolbox came in handy when a tree had fallen down blocking the exits through a forest road in tassie. Bottles became useful on the same trip when a couple had their car broken down side of road due to radiator out of water or something.. I hope I'd never have to use the fire extinguisher, it's there if I need it though…

  • Just wondering with the people with First Aid kits, when was the last time you checked the expiry date on some of the contents?

    • Every 6 months. A lot of items are fine beyond their expiry, saline gets replaced before expiry though.

      • -1

Good. Just a reminder to people to check their First Aid kits, they aren’t just set and forget.

      • +1

How does a 0.9% salt solution go bad? Salt itself is a preservative.

        • +1

Supposedly the plastic can leach into it, and one of the suppliers claimed something about ph levels and algae. However, the main reason I remove it from the human first aid kit and put it in the animal first aid kit is because the work policy is that all liquids in the first aid kits are to be within expiration date.

          • @mapax: Fair enough, if it's policy then follow it.

It's just that I've seen a coworker throw away salt because it passed the best before date. Salt. The stuff other things are preserved in, and it has been traditionally dug out of the ground where it resided for millions of years.

            • @Cluster: Don’t disagree, the problem is it is unlikely to be pure salt.

I think there's enough comments about what to keep in your car, but please remember if you park your car outside, do not leave the garage remote in the car. Better for thieves to just break into your car and leave, rather than give free access to your house if you don't lock the door inside the garage.

Do you live in your car?

  • Full change of clothes, never know when you may need them.

  • suv = big boot
melbourne = random weather, could be raining in the morning and 37 degrees 2 hrs later
= overnight bag in the boot with random jackets and socks, just in case.

    • +1

If we are driving somewhere then the car is a mobile wardrobe. We throw in everything including umbrellas and coats. My other half’s nephew had a wedding in SA in summer. We expected it to be 40C but the outdoor reception, at night, was freezing. We were rugged up in coats, gloves and scarves. The people who flew in were completely stuffed in their summer clothes.

  • The only thing I have in the boot, that I didn't see anyone else answer with yet, is a Hi Vis vest. If I have to change a wheel on the side of the road, I want to minimise the chances of someone taking me out. Cost under $10.

    • Try to position the car towards the approaching fire.
    • Turn on your hazard lights and headlights.
    • Close all windows.
