How Long Is Too Long to Leave Christmas Decorations up?

Back story, there is a family that has moved into the estate down the bottom of our street. Moved in just before Christmas and within a couple of days, a mini-army of people rocked up and started installing roof scaffolding. I assumed that they were putting solar on but no, this was to install the Christmas decorations.

Well the whole house was well and truly illuminated like many you see on the news at that time of year with copious lights, illuminated reindeer and a huge Merry Christmas on the roof. There is a construction to represent the tree on the driveway that had a big star on top, and a myriad of other decorations on the front lawn.

To be honest it looked quite impressive at the time, however her we two months later on and the reindeer and Merry Christmas are still on the roof, along with the tree contraption. The owner jumped up of the roof and removed the myriad of light that covered it and at least those lights that remain aren't turned on each night anymore, but my question is:

How long is too long to leave them up? When do the esteemed OzBargainers feel is the appropriate time to pack them all away?

Australia Day or Lunar NY definitely too late, all other poll options get a pass.

6pm….and I'm being generous. If sales are going, ain't no time for glowing

    • Also to summon jv's festive spirit in advance, go round and ask them what they're doing for Ramadan….

What's an estate in OZ? Sounds like yank talk.

    • -1

As an AI language model, allow me to elucidate: an estate embodies the complete array of assets, ranging from tangible real estate to personal belongings and financial investments, held by an individual at the time of their passing. It encapsulates all possessions, barring any lingering debts. Following the individual's transition, their estate may undergo dispersion in accordance with their will or the legal protocols of intestacy if no testament exists. Estate administration entails a meticulous process of asset identification, valuation, debt resolution, and the equitable allocation of assets to designated beneficiaries or heirs.

    • An estate is not only yank talk but a common expression for a housing development. Maybe you need to get out an experience some of the rest of the world.

    • It'll depend on context but usually it's about property [eg Land, buildings, other belongings eg deceased estate].
The context provided by OP suggests a real estate development/housing estate.

Disclaimer: Not a dictionary, not fluent in Yank Talk..

Why do you care? Let them do what they want.

  • My neighbours still have theirs up and they are always on at night. I don’t really mind, doesn’t really affect me.

I prob care more about people who let the front yard get out of control

Jan 5th or 6th is the traditional date. It's after the 12 days of Christmas.

Twelfth Night is a Christian holiday, celebrated on January 5. It marks the twelfth and final night of the Christmas season and the coming of Epiphany.

    • The 8th day marks the circumcision of Jesus….just putting it out there

  • we still have our tree up..

If your tree remains erect for more than 4 weeks, see an arborist.

      • At 4 hours I’d be seeing a doctor!

The Epiphany is usually the date in traditional households for everything to come down. We got a bit lazy over the years and left a string of smart lights up but would use them for different events.
    Reindeer though, definitely gone.

I take mine down June 30 and put up July 1

Out tree is still up.. we normally take it down Easter , but last year we took it down in August

Year round. but my ex's mum once called on the council to complain about one neighbour's string light still on after Easter which I found it insane

    • What did the poor intern at council’s complaint department reply with?

      • It's in the States, not even her immediate neigbour but 2 minutes drive from her house. Apparently enough neighbours hate fun and made complaints. The council actually succeed at getting lights taken down…

Gotta be down by Plough Monday, otherwise there ain't be time to be dilly-dallying about with decorations with farm chores to be done.

    • Real farmers decorate the sheep. Ploughbois ain’t nothin!

My large solar powered Star of David is up all year. I am not religious.

I have no idea why you give a f.

    • Maybe it’s one of those vampire things that literally causes pain to see a cross?

      • Would the Star of David effect vampires?

So what, it is now a crime against humanity to seek the opinion of others when something appears out of the norm?

I think your last sentence should have simply stopped after the fourth word.

  • Maybe they're repurposing them to be Ramadan lights since that's coming up..

  • Not my bill, don't care how long people leave them up

  • They're just starting to get ready for Christmas this year!

  • They come down the day the first hot cross buns put in an appearance at Colesworth.
Should then be replaced with a large illuminated bunny holding a basket and Happy Easter on the roof.
See council by-laws pertaining to Festivities.
Please note, the Festivus aluminium pole may remain in place until replaced with a May Pole.

Fook me. Nancy sure is negative today…

Having struggled to get my lights up on time the last 2 years, I’m planning on starting early this year, and leaving most lights up but any bigger stuff like inflatables/trees/whatever will go up December 1, and come down when my Christmas tree yellows. Usually mid January, but this year was end of Jan.

Aside from disliking having the display “in your back-yard” aka NIMBY, I do t understand what the issue is- could you maybe explain to me as though I’m a child who just discovered the Santa bunny was a lie?

I really would like to understand the problem, if there is one.

    • Not a problem per se, if it was I would discuss with them. I was merely asking a question of the larger community as it somewhat different to the normal status quote.

      • Fair enough. Keep in mind time, effort and expense to get them up. With kids, especially young ones it’s hard to find sufficient time to put them up and down, at least for me

    you sound like fun.

Mind your own business. It's absolutely nothing to do with you.

You also don't know what people are going through in their lives. Maybe a loved one died over xmas and they haven't been able to do anything because they have more important things to concern themselves with?

    • Likewise do you.

Seems that you can't ask a question without people taking it as an affront to their sensitive nature.

Maybe they are just lazy, just as possible as a family death.

  • Australia Day is the correct answer

  • As long as it's done before the kids go back to school.

  • I leave the tree up year round, it just gets moved to one of the spare bedrooms.

They are next level Ozbargainers, getting their cost per use way down by having them up for years and years!

  • Personally I think it is up to the owner, and their immediate neighbours. If everyone is cool then it probably raises a smile.

  • Everything comes down Jan 1st , or 7th at the latest
