    Ozb’s favourite nbn alternative

Didn’t they start kicking people off for putting these Sims in routers?

    • +1

      Frequently

    • +4

Didn’t we start buying second hand android phones to work around it?

    • Nothing a bit of magic can't fix…

    • +2

been using it in a 4g modem for about 2 years now no issues. use around 250gb pm

      • Luck you. I got my device blocked after accumulated 1TB in 10 months. No signal unless I move to a different area or put the sim into a different phone.

        • I have had no signals from my b818 at some stage, inserted hte felix sim to my old phone signal started ticking again, didn't bother put it back into the 4G router to test, plugged straight into my openwrt router and went from there.

soon after I changed to boost with cashback, and during end of last year I started to see something went wrong sign.

now I am thinking of belong or lebara

          • @OMGJL: does it mean changing device could get around this?

            • @sydney rider: never knew, never tried. I have plan B and I went with it straight away and had no other trouble. Testing a black box isn't much enjoyable so I didn't dive into this rabbit hole.

          • +1

@OMGJL: Belong is unlimited and sort of consistent performance wise as well as the porting process. Lebara can be sporadic, I’ve had to call them to activate twice recently, once was invalid sim number, the other time they wanted me to reply to a txt that had the Auth code but I didn’t have credit.

            • @frugalftw: Yeah but 20mbp vs 2mbp, not much of a comparison unless Belong is like $5

              • @quill: I was replying to the comment about replacement to boost sims, not suggesting belong is an equal replacement to Felix :)

      • +2

        Ditto, except 1tb+ p/m

    • +1

Why? If you put it in a router, at $40/month it is only $10 cheaper than churning NBN 25Mb every six months, but much worse.
      Slower, you get CGNATed, …

Makes more sense if you put the SIM in your phone, and can just use that as wifi or usb hotspot. Any restrictions on "tethering"?

I've been using a Boost SIM in my router. They say I'm not supposed to, but it is limited GB, so why would they care?

      • It's 20/month. Keep signing up to 20/m for 3 months or activate new sim every month. Why would you pay full price for this :)

        • Ok, three months if you buy direct, not from Coles? Still, this is a contract service like Belong, not a normal "prepaid" i.e. you need to actively can it or will be billed. Will they let you keep cancelling and rejoining?

        • How successful have you been with creating new accounts?

Do they still delete your account (according to T&Cs) if you paid the $20? Would that be refunded?

  • +7

Seems to be same price on Felix website with code FELIX50 - 50% off first 3 months which applies to all plans including $40/month unlimited plan!

    https://felixmobile.com.au/plan/

Fine print says "For personal use only and not a broadband replacement."

    • +2

LoL, what on earth would you use this for if not a broadband replacement!?!!

      • +1

It's my 'whole family connected to my phone's hotspot' simcard

      • Ermmmm, as a mobile network?

  • +1

    Vodafone

  • What's everyone's use case with this one? is this just a backup "broadband"?

    • I use it for my phone and home data, rarely have an issue with speeds or buffering and when I do it’s large files with heavy traffic

      • Ah I see. thanks for sharing.

    • When you are in-between churns because there’s a 6-month limit on how often you can go back to your favourite RSP; or that you have an around-the-country trip coming up 😇

  • 20 Mbps is slow as a NBN alternative

    • +4

20Mb is 9GB/hr. An hd movie in 10 minutes.

’tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as a church-door; but ’tis enough, ’twill serve.

  • I miss the free trials 😞

Been using this as my main internet via phone tether for around 6 months, no problems and speed is fine for my use, downloading movies occasionally, watching youtube, wasting money on ozb etc. Granted the speed is only fast enough for 1440p youtube, 4K buffers unbearably. Data usage is around 350GB a month.

  • I'd used felix for over 2 years. The internet speed is just not good enough anymore. They don't have 5G at all and nowhere near to having it. I rarely get full bars anywhere in the city. And their support is limited to just chat support only during business hours and they cannot find themselves in the wrong ever so good luck to them and their customers.

    • It all comes down to where you are located. Just like there is always a debate about which telco is the best but never a definite winner on ozb. Personally I’m satisfied with 4G speeds too, not a content creator who uploads heaps.

    • Before boost cashbacks and $0.01 Kogan starter packs I usually use the unlimited 2mbp Vodafone starter packs when it's on sale for $10, so 20mbp for double the price is a no brainer for me.

  • Thanks

  • Awesome offer just wanted to confirmed if this $20 and $15 offers are only for initial subscription or 3 months as per Felix's website or on-going?

    • Seeing that it’s sold as a prepaid service, I presume you don’t get the 3 month thing. In my mind it would just be like boost sims, activate one per month with a new number. That said, I’ve not personally used them so make sure you read what’s on the packet before you buy, if the 3-month promo is important to you.

      Here's how it works:
When you purchase the sim online using FELIX50 promocode (Say you choose the Unlimited Plan, RRP $40) –

      • You are charged $20 on the day you purchase.
      • Your actual plan does not start until you receive the SIM and activate the SIM using the Felix app.
      • Once you activate, the prepaid subscription starts. This is not a 28-day plan, so your renewal date stays the same each day.
      • Eg: If you activated on 02-March, then you get charged nothing (as you've already paid when you purchased the SIM). Next charge is $20 on 02-April, Next charge is $20 on 02-May. Now your promo price ends. Next charge is $40 on 02-June, then $40 on 02-July and so on.

      Hope this helps.
