I recommend Shogun on Hulu. Besssstttt

    • +2

      its only 2 episodes in

  • +5

It’s on Disney + as well Shogun

For all accounts, Napolean was extremely charismatic. Phoenix instead portrayed basically Joker 2.0. Terrible acting.

    • +8

They wanted to explore the relationship between Napoleon and Josephine. So it was not so much a study of Napoleon: great man of ambition and masterful tactician adored by all, but Napoleon: the lover of Josephine as seen from the perspective of his letters.

So it’s the typical Hollywood bait and switch, the titular white male character is sidelined in his own movie by a more diverse character.

        • -1

Correct, can't have a white male character who isn't simping or controlled by diversity. I guess you can't watch anything these days and expect anything decent or accurate. They took one line that he said on his death bed, and based the whole move off that.

    • +1

      Terrible direction, not acting

  • +9

This was terrible. But Josephine actors elocution is genuinely exquisite.

    • Really? Trailer looks good. I like massive wars action like lord of the ring

      • +10

Yeah this is not that. Trailer had by far the best bits.

      • +6

There are moments like that (large armies, etc) but those scenes are very short (15-30 secs each). A large amount of screen time are dedicated toward drama and his personal life. Its like The Expanse where space battles are only 15 secs short (I love the show BTW). I think Netflix is right to categorise this movie as a drama rather than action movie.

        • +1

          omg thanks lucky havent watch

        • +1

Yooooo shout out to the Expanse. (profanity) that was a good show. And book series.
Need to play the new game actually….

      • The trailer did look good. The bastards almost got us. They would’ve done if we weren’t ozbargainers and this too cheap to watch until it’s free.

  • +1

As an alternative, Abel Gance's superior Napoléon from 1927 is available on Mubi. At more than 330 minutes it could fill that slow Saturday night even better and it doesn't hurt that it is also considered a masterpiece by many.

  • +2

Even though the movie was awful from a plot and acting point of view (like genuinely terrible) I thought the movie was enjoyable. I think the epic scenes made up for it.

  • +3

Thank op. Hopefully it’s not as boring as 3.5hrs of Killers of the Flower Moon…😴

  • +2

It was ok. I'm not a history buff so I wasn't able to be annoyed by any "artistic liberties" taken with the characters, but I did wish it were more in-depth into the mind of Napoleon, rather than it being a biographical speedrun.

In a similar vein as "Death of Stalin"… it was an absolute hoot and I expected the characters to be caricatures of the real-life individuals they are portraying, so I was still able to enjoy it.

    • While I learned about Napolean in history lessons, I never really know his personal life or his behaviour so this movie was an eye opener.

    • I don't think the movie was great, but wow I had a lot of fun watching it. I think who you watch it with matters a lot too. Don't go with a history buff unless they happen to think making fun of Napoleon sounds like a good time haha.

  • +1

I'm thinking of waiting for the extended cut for the first viewing. I like Ridley Scott's sensibilities so I think I'll enjoy it.

    • Will the were be an extended cut?

      • Looks like it depends what day of the week you ask Scott https://www.polygon.com/24086844/napoleon-extended-directors…
Might be a long wait for the extended cut, so maybe I'll just watch the theatrical then.

        • +2

A good alternative might be to find Kingdom Of Heaven Director's Cut, which isn't streaming anywhere in Australia but you can find it on Blu-Ray. It turned a mediocre Ridley Scott movie into a great one.

          • @Morven: Director’s Cut or Roadshow version? Which is better? Thanks

            • @Ozjoey: Good question @Ozjoey - I hadn't heard of the Roadshow version before. Turns out it's basically the same as the director's cut. According to Reddit: "The Roadshow Edition is just the Director's Cut with an overture and an intermission, like the old classics."

  • +2

Too much focus on Josephine in this version imo

    • You’re not looking forward to the extended cut then

  • +3

    Not tonight, OP

  • Streaming is not smooth on android tv, only got issues with apple tv app.

    • Apple TV+ streams at a higher bitrate than other streaming services https://www.avsforum.com/threads/what-online-streaming-servi…

      • Even for 250mbps nbn it should buffer a lot? Working fine on laptop.

    • I had zero issues with streaming it on Apple TV. Picture and sound absolutely brilliant both through the Apple TV app on my TV and the 4k Apple TV device.

As to the story line, I found it entertaining but unsatisfying- probably because I was expecting an epic drama given its length. A bit more time spent of the key moments in history that he was part of and less focus on his desire to approach from behind and under the table in his personal battles with Josephine - that sort of thing.

The movie I wanted is still to be made. Pity, because with the right script the two lead actors in this film have the goods to deliver much more.

    • I have no Apple devices in my household and it runs fantastic on all my devices from browsers to apps.

      Fixed Wireless +- 95Mbps

  • Apple TV+ US have added 50 movies for the month of March, if anyone has sub/free trial in the US

    • fingers crossed this comes to Australia - I think Apple TV+ has great quality/compression/Dolby Vision etc

I watched this movie in the cinemas. Be warned, it's a terrible movie.

  • +4

This was a terrible movie. One of actually a very short list of movies I started watching but didn't finish.

  • -1

    It was live yesterday

Signed up for Appletv trial for it.

    Good movie

Joacquin phoenix is great in it.

  • There is nothing we can do.

  • +1

    Good movie 5/7

  • +1

Should have been called Josephine instead of Napolean…

    • +1

      It’s not called Napolean though?

  • Do chickens have large talo…. oh wait wrong Napoleon

  • It didn’t find it as terrible as some here, but I certainly won’t be watching it a second time.

Project Gutenberg has Napoleon's Letters to Josephine, by Henry Foljambe Hall available free.

  • +1

Destiny has brought me this lamb chop! 🥩

  • Great movie. Recommend 👍

  • It could’ve been so good, but 7/10 anyway. For slow weekends, space odyssey is on sbs OD, & War & Peace (about 8 hours) is on utube. Pre-high-tech, this one’s armies are real. Possibly the greatest ever number of ‘actors’ in any movie. The latest Dune 1 gets 8/10 from me, though reviews suggest Dune 2 not so good. Technology should’ve made Dune a masterpiece, like the books

    • Fear not - Dune 2 is getting outstanding reviews and is already shaping up to be one of the great sci-fi films. Pretty much everyone seems to be agreeing that it's even better than Part 1 (Part 1 is at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Part 2 is at 94%).

Is it as good as Napoleon Dynamite?

  • watched was good. don't get what the comments saying "there werent enough war scenes" are on about.

it's a bio and had enough war scenes imo. they werent short either. story kind of starts going back and back to his relationship with wife and such but I didn't think the movie should be named "josephine" either.

was good imo not boring or terrible. and no I didn't get the feeling joker was playing napoleon like another comment said either.
