[NSW, WA, QLD, NT] SpecRite Okoume FJ Timber Panel 1000 x 405 x 18mm $10 in-Store @ Select Bunnings Stores

630

Cheap hardwood panel on clearance at various Bunnings, down from $22. I found the colour to be pretty consistent across the FJ strips. Use the stock checker since they have already removed the product page on the Bunnings website. Stores with less than 10 stock I'd say are unlikely to actually have them, but you can try.

In stock (>10):
NSW - Rouse Hill, Seven Hills, Rydalmere, Dural (also Griffith, Armidale, Glendale, Forster)
QLD - Nerang
WA - Harrisdale, Joondalup, Balcatta, Maddington, Bibra Lake, Belmont
NT - Darwin

Same size Pine panel currently $29 at Bunnings.

what do people use them for?

I made shelves on the side of PC desk for my PC and NAS.

I mounted some high on the walls in my garage. Good for storing seasonal stuff like Christmas trees n stuff. Shouldn't obstruct vehicles getting in either.

Does Bunnings provide cutting services for timber with your preffered dimensions?

    • +2

I am wondering the same thing. I know they do in New Zealand.

    • +5

Asked a few months ago in Sydney, from memory they charge $1 per cut but the first cut was free.

Assuming they have the equipment and someone qualified to do it when you visit.

      • +1

I had a dude cut 4 pieces for me and didn't charge. some places do have limits on how small they'll cut though. Aka no length less than 30cm at the one I went to.

    • +3

Used to be first 2 cuts free, then 50c or 1$ per cut. Don't know what it is nowadays. Not super accurate cuts. You can ask at trade desk

    • +5

Even if they have the proper equipment (some Bunnings don't), sometimes the staff can't be bothered esp. at a busy time.

Having said that when you get good staff they do it to detail - I had a 2.4m length once that I said I wanted halved, he came back to me to say the length was actually x cm longer, and if I wanted exact half or if I wanted 1.2m.

      • yeah my local has a panel saw but its always / often out of order.
(i was enquiring about laminate sheeting)

i noticed most sheets were oversize but often with damaged edges. I guess being oversize alleviates the damage being a problem as you can cut off the damage before cutting to size.

    • +2

Yep, @Delphinus is right, but not all the Bunnings do it so maybe call up first.

The cut wasn't very accurate though (off by almost a cm). I got a guy to cut some sleepers for me a few years back and they weren't very accurate. Maybe it's because he knew how I planned to use them so he didn't need to be too accurate.

Ingot panels and breams cut in NZ and they said they can't be that accurate due to the machinery. The staff also moaned that the cutting shops were cheaper out in and the panel saws fail regularly, when I wanted a large panel cut I ended up going to three different shops to find a working saw.

Bunnings won't cut laminated timber. It's in their website.

      • +1

Yeah it’s a safety issue. Only solid panels like melamine and plywood can be cut.

        • They cut it for me, and other people too cos they gave me two of some other people's off cuts

    • Yes but don’t rely on them for your finished cuts. They have a 3mm variation

    • +3

Most certainly they do not in the fashion you asked! They will cut specific timber down to fit in a vehicle most likely - accuracy is not guaranteed. I do know with dressed pine they offer a handsaw to cut yourself lol and will not use any other power operated saw for that timber.

My recommendation is if you are into DIY jobs regularly throughout the year for anything, eg. 10+ instances, get yourself a mens shed membership (annual cost)

      https://mensshed.org/

they have woodwork and metal work shops/sheds that you can learn from other people how to cut stuff, clean it up etc, and as well all without needing to have your own power/non-power tools either.

      • +5

Good advice. Just don’t expect to leave in a hurry lol

For those in Brisbane there is also a tool library at the Hamilton Men’s Shed. Membership is $125 but it gives you access to a full range of tools, machinery and equipment.

        https://www.brisbanetoollibrary.org/memberships

        • Brisbane Tool Library is great for getting an electric mower for a week, as long as you book a long time in advance.

      • What is the price? Browsed around for a bit, couldn't find it.

        • +1

For my local in WA I got a quoted value of 85$/year

          https://mensshedswa.org.au/

I also do not know if memberships allow using different sheds either. Some sheds are better than others.

          • @cobknob: Oh I see, I thought it was like a franchise with a single membership thing. Thanks!

            • +1

@xrailgun: I have not signed up yet to any but 1 of my trading routes takes me through East of Perth, and I have viewed Midlands and heard good things about Bassendean. Probably check out some others in coming months when I can.

I'm more of a metals person, and sadly of yet to find a decent working newer metal lathe. Midland has a fantastic newly built woodworking shed, with air conditioning, and a dust extraction system. There should be more places like this everywhere so folks can build stuff.

          • @cobknob: What are good sheds in Perth area (south of river)? Perhaps separate as in the community, the tools, ..

            • @MerlinKlendatu: You'd have to investigate and to see what's around locally to you. They also operate or available different times - that's the only thing that gets me a bit.

    • Yes

    • yes, most of the time they dont charge but the occasional one will write you up a cutting receipt

  • +1

Yeh from my experience, Bunnings only offer a basic cut.
This link might help explain what they can do:

    https://www.workshop.bunnings.com.au/t5/Best-Advice/Does-Bun…

  • Did anyone get some of these and paint them? I cut one, routered the edges and painted it and added a clear coat. 48 hours later it bubbled everywhere.

Not supposed to paint this timber?

    • +1

It paints fine, sounds like an issue with your process. Was it a hot day? Had the first coat dried before the second? Was the clear coat compatible with the undercoat?

      • Did u shake the can? or stir the can? shaking the can introduces air. thats why they stir

    • +1

It may have be an interaction between the paint and the clear coat. Were they the same? By the description of the effect it sounds like waterbased over oil water based or not enough time was given before the first coats had fully dried.

    • I had no problems with the clear coat on mine. I used a low voc water based product.

  • Are these panels finished? Or need finishing

    • These panels are dressed (i.e. dimensionally sawn and sanded) but don't have a coat of finish.

    • Or need finishing

      Gigiddy

  • I have used Okoume panel once and found it disappointing. Difficult to get a good smooth finish and did not stain evenly (even allowing for grain etc).

Worth paying more for something else.

  • Guessing it's not thick or strong enough for a table top

Anyone know what's the better one?

    • +1

This type is fine to use as a table top, but you need to reinforce it if you are not using a frame.

Perfectly fine for electric standing desks.

  • Found these in bunning bonnyring NSW bout 10days ago bought 4

  • +1

Might be my eyes but they look more than 40cm wide?

    • I was thinking this same thing.

    • +1

well, they ARE more than 40cm wide… 5mm to be precise :-D
All jesting aside, probably just depth perception (or rather, deception)

  • Anything for Vic? Could you use these as cheap kitchen bench tops?

  • -1

Can these be used to build something outdoorsy - I am thinking garden beds ?
Say, if I apply a coat of epoxy etc ?

    • +3

It will be cheaper and more durable to build garden beds out of treated pine sleepers - which are rated for external, on ground use.

If it's off the ground (e.g. does not touch soil) like a garden bench I don't see why not.

      • +1

Good idea.. also, might be a good idea to line the bed with black garden plastic so the soil doesnt soak up the poisonous chemicals of some of those treated sleepers… dont want to be eating vedgetables laced with poison heh

        • +2

Couldn't agree more. I can't emphasize this enough that treated pine contains arsenic and will leech into edible plants. In the states (US) it's banned for that reason.

          • @cobknob: Wanted to add some background information. That ban in the US was voluntary back in 2003-4. In Oz we have limited its use but I'd recommend against using it where you'd come into regular contact, eg decking, fence posts, near gardens or playgrounds where it could leach, etc. There are always alternatives to products that are safer for health.

      • +1

        treated pine sleepers

There are recycling plants that sell cheap refurbished hard wood sleepers. These would be better and more durable for garden beds and do not contain chemicals

        • Yeah true on the recycled hardwood sleepers, though I find that they are generally in pretty awful condition and a lot more expensive too.

          • @tekisei: There is a factory in sydney that sells them pretty cheap, i believe they are NFP.

The recut and refurbish them to near original condition.

  • Can these be used to make a shooting bench rest using a saw horse underneath?

  • Just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting them shipped between stores? I want 20 of them

  • Wow, for once my local shop has something clearanced! Thanks for the deal OP, will be heading down tonight to get a bunch… then I'll figure out what to build later on.
