Buying Burial Plots from other People ?

Hello

I’d like to know if you can buy burial plots for well known Cemeteries, by buying off other people who no longer want their plots (bought in advance, and never used) ?

And if so, where can you do that, e.g. where online, or some sort of government agency, or a specific newspaper section?

I’m only interested in a plot for a traditional, standard burial with a coffin, in Brisbane.

While it might be a little cheaper to buy this way (if it is even possible to do this)… it’s actually more about trying to have some choice as to which part of the cemetery you want to get a plot in (as there are very few plots available for purchase).

Say someone has bought 4x single burial plots; all next to each other. But maybe later on, someone decides that they want to be cremated instead – so the family might end up with a spare plot that they no longer need?

How do they sell them, and where?

Please note that this is not a thread to discuss cremation vs burial or anything else like that.

And if you see a bunch of currently “unused” plots that you’ve been told are already sold (damn near everything is sold)… is there a respectful/indirect way to contact the owners, and ask if they might be interested in selling?

Any ideas?

Thank you for your help

Most of the time the Plots are Leased, so the Lease is exclusive for a set period of time and can either be renewed or reverts.

    • What happens 100 years on when the lease is up, they just dig up the plot and throw you in the trash?

is there any you left over by then?

From what I can see they take what is left of the remains, put them in an ossuary box, and rebury them. Some go in the same plot just deeper.

Go have a look at the Catacombs in Paris. They emptied a bunch of cemeteries and stored the bones in the Catacombs under the city. They’ve even done patterns out of skulls. It is fascinating if somewhat macabre.

Personally I think burial is a waste of good land. I think cremation is a better option.

Cremation is bad for the environment. Don't believe me? Follow the science.

@Oofy Doofy: Nah, not compared to burial.

            • @try2bhelpful: It's worse than burial, absolutely.

Although burial in a typical coffin isn’t very good either.

@Oofy Doofy: When you take into account the amount of space taken up with burying people I don’t think cremation would be.

                • @try2bhelpful: All the microbes return you to the earth… the ground is the best place for dead people.

@Oofy Doofy: And if we minced people up and returned them to the earth au natural out in the bush somewhere I wouldn’t have an issue. However, we embalm them with chemicals and put them in coffins. We take up valuable land that would be better saved as housing for the living.

                    • @try2bhelpful: Lol people need to stop being so precious about their dead bodies. Dust to dust.

Yeah i agree, the coffin and all the jazz that goes along with it, is not compatible with our ongoing understanding of how the environment works, and how it's affected by what we do.

Heard a comedian talk about this. He said he was nervous because he would prefer life guards who thought their best interest was served by keeping you from drowning.

                        • @try2bhelpful: "Modern WtE technologies incorporate various pollution control mechanisms to reduce emissions of pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and heavy metals."

Unfortunately they have none of these controls for crematoriums.

                          • @Oofy Doofy: If we take out the coffins I wonder how bad the pollutants would be? However I do worry about my fillings.

I think its 25 years now

Need to check the terms of the lease. The lease we have for ours reverts back to Council. There's no opportunity to onsell etc. No restrictions as who goes in it mind you, just who 'owns' the lease.

If its a case of say, grandparents have decided to be cremated but have a plot available, speak with the Cemetery on a possible transfer of ownership.

In terms of strangers, it would go back to Cemetery management and hit the next on the waitlist.

<insert dying to get in joke here>

    Have you checked Marketplace?

      Is this still available?

    • Gumtree might be better

    Ring the cemetery trust

They asked to check with Ozb first for similar stories.

On the plus side, if you get a plot you'll have very quiet neighbours.

    Used is always cheaper

Be sure to post on Ozbargain if there are any good deals.

it’s actually more about trying to have some choice as to which part of the cemetery you want to get a plot in

Op wants one in the middle so they can be in the dead centre.

    I’ll see my self out…

    • Is there Wi-Fi?

I’ve heard it’s a bit of a dead spot for reception.

No bones about it, the situation is grave.

    Hello good sir/madam

If you're reading this, obviously you're not dead yet. Do you mind selling your plot?

    Wishing you a long life.

      Seance?
“Your plot is coming up for renewal, have you thought about a change of address or subletting”.

      • oh god.. lolololol

      • Where do you want your mail forwarded?

        • +1

Would probably need to give a forwarding address for the rapture.

Pro tip: if you go the second hand route, make sure you don't take up their offer to "try before you buy".

I'm thinking of The Vanishing (1988)…

    • ++ for noting the 1988 version

  • What part of the cemetary were you hoping to get into? I hear most plots with views are taken, and your more likely to end up in a battle axe lot with limited access for your mourners.
