Best Way to Pay for Airfare in NZD, WISE Is Only One I Know of

Hi OzBargain fam.

Need to travel domestic within NZ and fares are better on local sites and even Jetstar takes you to their NZ site. I can convert in AUD on site but then fare comes out to be same. I am based in Syd so what would be the best way to pay for these airfares.

TIA

  • credit card travel insurance

    • Care to explain more?

      • Not 100% because you’re travelling domestically, but check if your credit card has cover when paying for flights with it

  • Revolut?

  • Depending on the price difference you might not come our any better after the conversion fees with wise.

ING is still doing free international transactions though.

  • If you have 28 Degrees credit card, that's what I did for Auckland to Christchurch flight early this month. Second card I will use Ubank Visa Debit, I'm guessing most Visa Debit is the same. If there is option on currency, always pay the local, currency not AUD.

    • Did you get close to market exchange rate with 28 degrees?

  • +2

How much $ are we talking about? Sure use your FX friendly card if you have one (Citibank Plus>NAB, Wise debit, 28 degrees), if you don't I wouldn't bother setting something up.

    • The difference is not huge but I need 10 tickets so it all adds up. More I save is more to spend on holiday.

  • I'm guessing the OP is seeing pre-GST fares until they choose Aus as currency.

    Maybe?

    • The fares are including GST and it actually goes up when I choose AUD.

  • What cards/accounts do you have? Sure you could open Wise account, use it to convert AUD to NZD at a good time for exchange rate, then use the virtual card to pay in NZD. Probably the quickest solution.

    • ING, Citibank credit card and St george debit. WISE is one option I am considering, just wanted to see what else do people use or is better than WISE.

      • Probably ING. Research it but I think if you fill some specific requirements there's no fee and Visa exchange rates. If you don't meet, 3% fee plus Visa rates.

        • Thanks for the input, I'll look into it.
