  • Isn't it just Sodium Chloride??

FYI - can't be used with contact lens

50c off isnt my idea of "very cheap"

for best eye care/health, besides preservative-free, avoid eye drops from bottle, only use sterile vials - carmellose sodium 1% is best for dry eyes, these are available over-the-counter, or possibly cheaper via prescription:

    • Celluvisc
    • Optifresh Plus (can be used with contact lenses)

Where is this info from? My optom has recommended vials before but I haven't heard of carmellose before?

ask an ophthalmologist not optometrist :)

        • +1

Except optometrists are way more likely to deal with dry eye patients daily

          • @Spets: even if true, unfortunately that doesn't necessarily mean that they know how to deal with them properly

however in terms of number of patients with eye issues, a GP would perhaps likely encounter more; proportionately, an ophthalmologist would also likely encounter more

a nurse sees more patients than a GP, who in turn sees more than a specialist, but that doesn't mean that a nurse is better than a specialist

            • @tonester: Hello, ophthalmologist.

            • @tonester: Opthal here, who was an optom. I can tell you now majority of optoms are far better equipped to deal with 99% of dry eye patients, then I am now. That 1% require systemic immunosuppression or have other compounding conditions. In regards, my go to eyedrops for dry eye they are Cationorm, novatears or hylofresh.

              • @Aroundthewicket: given that you're now an opthal, you probably weren't an ordinary optom :)

thanks, i forgot about Hylo-Fresh/Forte (sodium hyaluronate 0.1%/0.2%), which uses a bottle designed so that all drops are delivered sterile

don't know much about NovaTears (perfluorohexyloctane) though - how viscous is it compared with Celluvisc?

                • @tonester: I describe Novatears as almost like cooking oil its not very viscous and quite oily.

        • +1

I don't doubt an ophthalmologist would know way more. I'm just surprised this is the first I'm hearing of it after dealing with multiple optometrists so I'll need to look into how much more effective it is

Edit: have you had a look at Carmellose sodium with lipid https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3585441/

          • @Ibz: no worries - sorry, don't know if any do

  • +1

Ah yes Visine, good for your eyes (not medical advice)

  • Good price. However it's shocking how expensive they are in Australia! My tip is to get them when you're overseas. Not the same brand but pretty much the same function, you can get it for under $1.50 each in Asia.. they're small so load up 10 of them and you save $55

This bottle expires after 30 days of opening. Best option is this.

Don't forget to claim $5 cashback offer.

    • couldn't find any $5 cashback offer on the website?

      • My bad. Refresh Plus has $5 cashback

    • +1

+1 vials are better, though those have only 0.5% carmellose sodium

  • How are these compared to Hylo forte? for use as artificial tears / dry eyes.
